I know how too cure the 1.7 no turbo rough idle for good with little more than a lenght of rubber pipe. it was driving me mad, but now it idles silky smooth with no hunting if you quickly stab the throttle and no jerking if you set off very gently easing the throttle on from tickover. I only know the 1.7 no turbo, i am on my second one. i am sure mine now ticks over every bit as smooth as the 2.0 is always quoted. after all it uses the same fenix 3b ecu.no more trying to clean the throttle body.

I have an immaculate Volvo 480 1992 2.0 ES. The cam belt snapped a couple of weeks ago and the engine has suffered valve damage but not piston damage. Does anyone know of a breaker that would pay a reasonable price for this car or any advice on how difficult this repair is? Thanks. Jon

I have owned and driven 480s for the past 15 years. My current car is a K Reg 2.0I ES module and now sadly has a Information Centre problem (the Display Electronic Monitoring Unit doesn't work)Having investigated a replacement part on the Internet I am advised by the Parts Dealer that they have a Spare available but there is some confusion as to whether it is sutable for my car.
They have been given me a number - K10753 - which they inform is the part I need and indeed this number is shown on my unit just below the Speedometer BUT the Dealer tells me that that this unit is used on cars fitted with an AIRBAG faclity which mine is NOT.
Can anyone please advise me whether the part offerde is interchangeable with the decfective unit in my car and if not what part I should be looking for.
Thank You Everyone

Great and helpful site.
Suggestion: There must be a way you can change the forum posts so as not to have to scroll across almost the entire screen in order to read. It's tedious.
Thank you from New Zealand.

Hi there
Can anyone help? My dad (now 80) has a Volvo 480 Turbo - red - F registered. It's his pride and joy - only drives short distances to the shops. He's decided to sell due to his age but doesn't know where to sell it or what it's worth. It's a lovely car, engine very quiet, leather upholstery and low mileage. Always been garage maintained -full MOT and taxed.Does anyone know anyone that may be interested? Thanks

Please could someone help me as I need a fix quickly. I have a 2.0 GT Volvo and when i brake from either third or fourth gear and slowly come to a stop the revs die right down to 200 and then fluctuate up and down before finally stopping sometimes it evens stalls. just wonder whether this could be related to the dizzie cap or whether it is more serious. it has just had new plugs and leads in the hope that would fix it but ti has not. please contact me as soon as anyone has an idea. thank you so much. cheers

Dear Volvo 480 club,
First I would like to thank you for making the various service and parts documents available for other 480 users.
I downloaded them with grat gratitude.
I only couldn't find the complete service manual, only chapters on body work and airconditioning. Do you have the other sections also available?
Thanx for your help so far

Hi Rick,
Basically the forum and the members pages arent linked! You need a car to register on this side of the site (and to access the Car of the month and the webshop etc and specification guides) but the forum can be registered by all. All you need to do is click forum at the top of the page, and then click register. Follow the instructions and bobs your uncle, Fannys your aunt your registered and able to post and some very kind fellows will most certainly reply and give advice where to find a peach! And then when you do get a car you can join the clubsite here and view the precious accessories catalog and other such items of mirth and wonderment ;)
Take it easy mate,
Rob AKA Guitarcarfanatic
P.S- Very tidy looking GT on autotrader BTW. A complete steal at £495 with a full months MOT!

Hi. I'm looking for a decent late model 2.0L 480 and hoped to join the forum to get info and advice before buying one. Unfortunately that seems to be impossible as the registration form requires details of your current 480. Do you deliberately exclude people who don't have one already or is this just a massive oversight on the part of the web master? For instance, if I wanted to buy one of the cars advertised in the forum for sale section, how would I do this without already owning one? Been reading the forums and it's only fuelled my desire to buy one even more so I'm really disappointed that I can't join until I do.

Recently on E-bay looking at 480 celeb for sale and read a question from Steve of your club requesting info on the 480 'Celeb' No. In order you guys can estimate how many are left on the road. I currently have No. 342 on my drive which is running well. Unfortunately a previous one I owned was written off very badly in an accident (although passengers escaped almost unharmed !!)and has been scrapped, not sure of the number, had no badge when purchased though I could probably pass on chasis number etc from old documents, reg was N447 BYB. I aslo have another 'celeb' at a yard, it needs about £500 spent to pass MOT but runs fine, reg N198 OJU, anyone interested in providing a caring home ?

I recently move to uk , and now I was thinking to buy a car. The 480 was one of the first car that I drove (only if for a night, borrowed from a friend). My budget is limited, so I thinking between a seicento and this art of stile car it's natural. I found one 1.7 turbo with 70,000miles on the clok, but I would be gratefull to anyone who might be able to give me some tips, and especially a review of the car. Many thanks in advance

This is a great site. I have just brought a 1992 2ltr white volvo 480 es and I love it! It has only had one previous owner who kept it well! There are a few things that I would prefer to change and that is the colour. If I were to have it repainted how much would that cost? Plus does anyone know how to tighten the handbrake as its really loose? Ok I also wanted to say that this is an awesome site that my brother emailed me so hats off to you guys!

Dear friends, I see no other way to contact you, therefore please excuse my using your guest-book. It appears my e-mail addresses are banned from entering your Forum & therefor I am unable to participate could you please put this situation right.
I would like to ask volvo members if any of them might have the 440/480 Air conditioning Service Manual (In English) That is the same one which appears in your download section (in Dutch)I have searched the web for this Manual (Without success) I'm sure it would be extremely usefull to many 480 owners in English.
Best regards
Philip

What an ace site! I have finally revisited the one car I never tired of driving! I had a 1990 Black 480Turbo which never failed me. Having been forced to sell her for family reasons I needed now to find a safe car for my yourng children to ride in and something for me to have my mid life crisis! I now own a Dark Grey 480 Celebration which needs a couple of small jobs doing on it, otherwise it is in excellent condition. The result? I haven't stopped smiling yet!! I will get my details and join the rset of you club members shortly. Take care.

Ild just like to say hi there to all u wedge fans, ive recently, well say resently its been about 2 years now, finally finished my final my 480 body kit, my friend asked me if i was interested in building 1 as no1 else outthere does, so i jumped at the chance, we spent ours making plugs molds, messing with filler, laminating the list of dirty jobs was endless, but just 2 weeks ago we cracked our first bumper out,and fited it to my car...... any way this means naw there is a customised bodykit for a 48,its a bit mean looking with lots ov personality and im shore it will turn heads, so if there is any1 outthere interested in purchasing 1, then myself and my friend will be happy to ablidge, for more info email me at dean480@hotmail.co.uk or lwhiteland@fsmail.net thank you

Congratulations for the excelent site. I,m owner of a 91 440 turbo. I think its a fairly nice car with full extras and a real powerful engine. Altough, I'd wish the dashboard (almost the same of 480?) was a bit resistant. That's a shame, because when I go in a bumpy road the plastic makes a sinphony of noises. Is there anyone who can give me ideas on how to solve this problem?
Many thanks in advance for your kind help and if anyone knows of any 91 model reparation manual, pls let me know. Best regards Henrique Gomes.

Hulp gezocht.

Well where to start.I bought a 480 ES on ebay about 3 months ago becaues it was a black one and a 1990 when i went to collect it i was mortified because it was grey (he borrowed someone else,s photo,s )but anyway i grew to like it and all it needs are the front wheel bearings and a couple of tyres and its a fairly nice car apart from the rear wheel arches that could do with a proper repair . Then i decided to buy a rough one for spares as they are not easy to locate and so one came up on ebay with no description and i bought it for £32 and went to collect it from Bristol and would you believe it is a 1992 BLACK es it has a few problems and has been neglected for a while but nothing i cant rectify so now i need another spares car as i need both window mechanism,s plus a few bits of trim etc and thats it my black beauty will soon be on the road in all its glory

Hello one and all,
Great website! I applied to join a few months ago but haven't heard anything. I'm the proud owner of a '94 2.0 ES, and somone managed to drive into the side of me recently. It's a write off even though it's only a front passenger wing / light / tracking & steering. I'm going to fix it myself - does anyone know where I could get a (pref Paris blue) front passenger wing near Glasgow? I know there's the net, but I assume it would be cheaper to do it locally. Thanks,
Martin

Hi
I want a volvo 480 but I have a disability called Ehlers Danlos Syndtome that basically affects my muscles joints and ligaments and meens that I can only drive an auto as these seem to be so few and far between and I really want a Turbo (our other car is a volvo 850 T5 Manual) which I can not drive, does anyone know if I buy a manual car can u have an auto box put in it? I would be looking at buying a 94 or 95 model. Also does anyone know if the 2.0 GT model or if the Turbo model was available with an auto box?
Many thanks in advance for your help and if anyone knows of any 94/95 auto models available for sale at a reasonable price could they please let me know and how much should I pay for a reasonable GT/Turbo or Celebration model?
Kind regards
Joanna Dalton

Just bought my First 480, my parent's (who are wonderful)have borrowed or lent or lended me funds (never have grasped which word to use)even though I am 35 yrs old. The car is pretty mint. There are a few signs of wear and tear but I can see to those myself. My main concern is the info centre only worked for a couple of hours and now does not. I need to know how to repair this. I have checked the connection to the switch on the dashboard and that is fine. All the leads connecting to the alternator on the engine also seem to be secure.
It stopped working and then worked again and then did not work again. Whay is that a symtom of? If you know then please tell me and I will reapir it. There is a little bit of rust on each rear wheel arch which I will also get repaird and made good. The car is a 1989 white 480ES and is fitted with a CD Player and even has a spare alloy well as the space saver tyre. I have driven the car today for a few hours and it's quick and it's racey and I like it. It is pretty amazing the way the car stick's to the road and it took me by supprise at one point.
Any advise on this model and my Info Centre problem would be appreciated. Cheers. Alan.

This car remembers me to the legendary former P 1800 (ES) series. Strangely enough, the prices are really not too high overhere (for a 2.000,-- man already can buy a nice one!). By the way, ins't it originally a Dutch product? Was 1986 the year of introduction? And till when it was produced?

Hi, I have owned a 1994 2 litre 480ES for the last six years and it has been brilliant. The timing belt has just gone and I sadly now have to let go as I don't have the space to hold onto it and I know absolutely nothing about repairing cars. I really don't like the thought of my precious car ending up in a scrap yard. It seems to good to be dumped. Is there anyone interested in having it for parts or repair as I know from experience that second hand parts are really difficult to get hold of.

Hi guys, first of all i would like to congtatulate you for your great website and thank you for the great information.
I just bought ( yesterday )a beautiful black metallic Volvo 480 Turbo almost brand new ( 20,000 miles, rear floor carpeting still covered in plastic ) and im loving every second i'm in it. But all four brake discs are worn due to never changing the pads. I was wondering if you guys know where i could buy a set of discs in good condition. Also i dont know where to find the VIN number, the only numbers i found are on the aluminium plate under the bonnet and are as follows : XLBEX193ENC573106 and 0490201V. do these numbers make any sense to you ? i have tried to join the club but i did not know the VIN number and just left it as it was but thought i could change it later. i think i was wrong since i never got a reply with the username and password. Anyway i would like to join this great club if possible and if you could tell me where to find the VIN number.
Thank you
Mike

Hi, Just bought a 480 ES, doing some work on it. The Electric Window Cable has become tangled in the motor. This seems to be a common problem, anyone know the best solution? Volvo want £250 for a new one. Does anyone know if any other volvos use the same winding rack? Not many of 480s around scrap yards!

I have recently had the timing belt go on my 1991 black volvo 480 turbo and sadly have decided I cannot repair it. I was wondering whether it could be of use to any enthusiast for parts/repair otherwise it will have to go to the crusher as I do not have space for it.
I would prefer it to be recycled if possible, so if you know of any one or company that might want it for parts/repair then please let me know.
I do not want any money for it, but would just rather know that it is of use to someone. It has served me very well over the past 5 years and am sad to see it go.
Car details:
volvo 480 turbo J784NEG
149000 miles
gearbox replaced 2 months ago
one brand new tyre, others with good tread
new battery 4 months ago
Location:
Kingston upon thames
Obviously you would need to pick it up on a trailer or something as it is currently motionless.
regards,
Jonny

Please help!
The "information centre" sometimes (or most of the time) does not display. Sometimes, especially after a long journey it displays. Did any body have the same problem before? what shall I do?

Reluctantly I am thinking of selling my Volvo 480 Celebration (automatic) (number I forget - but apparently they only made four hundred and eighty, which could be b*llsh*t).
I've enjoyed having it and have waited for Volvo to come up with something even vaguely like it. It still looks better than most other designs around! Now thinking of the V50 SE AWD Geartronic but I'm in no hurry and would prefer one that is 'ex demonstration' to save the massive drop in value. If one doesn't come along - I'm happy to keep running along!
For its age - in good condition. Rarely had much trouble - from what I see I've been lucky! Mileage 84,000.
What sort of offers are there out there? - in other words what sort of value has this 'special' car got??
Anyone interested?

Hi
I have a 89 480 and am having a little bother with the starter motor. I replaced it and there is still no action. I've had a look for a fuse or relay but I am unable to find it. Does anyone have any ideas? Also how do you check if there is power to the starter motor. I have put a volta meter across the terminals but there seems to be a constant 12V across it (and is doesn't change when the ignition is turned on), is this normal? Also a by product of me trying to fix it has caused the front lights to stop coming up, although they are on.
Cheers

Just bought my second 480, a '94 GT 2.0i in fantastic Green, sits very well alongside my now rather tired '00 S40. The 480 has slightly higher miles, but it's in much better condition, they don't make 'em like they used too! Have loved 480's since I first saw one, and I think I've the Volvo bug, which my brother has had passed down. Anyway, can't wait to get on the site and hopefully learn more about my new baby.

Hi! I've just registered with the Volvo 480 Club Europe and I'm now waiting to be enrolled... In the meantime, I need urgent help, please! I have a 1993 Volvo 480es 2.0i It's just had a replacement engine fitted as the original one had split piston rings or similar. Anyway, the car itself runs great - no problems there at all. However, I now have no Online Computer / Electronic Information Centre! It is totally dead. I've checked the fuse, which is fine. I've checked the Haynes Workshop Manual but offers no section on Troubleshooting the Info Centre. Can anyone offer any ideas/suggestions/guidance, please? I don't know much about cars in the first place so I don't want to start messing around with this in case I make things worse! Obviously, I have no fuel gauge and I do a lot of mileage on a daily basis, so I really do need to have this onboard computer up and running asap. Any help would be most gratefully received! Many thanks in anticipation of your replies. Kind regards, Nigel.

what a really good site.
I am currently researching the 480 asa I am considering buying one for my weekly commute from Nottingham to the West country (300 Miles).
One thing I am dissapointed about is that you have to own a 480 (Know the VIN) to register and fully explore the site.
Thanks for the help

Hello again,
It seems I can't get my username and password for logging in on my e-mail.
I've completed the procedure in the help menu several times but still no answer from the server. It would be nice if someone could contact me (the administrator maybe) and show me a way to get my forgotten password back. Thank you in advance for it will be a big dissappointment to not become a member of such a good site on the beautifull Volvo 480!!!
Best wishes to You all and have a nice driving.

Good morning
I own radio, EQ that I do not need anymore. If you are interested in acquiring audio system dating back to the end of the eighties or mid-nineties, please let me know.
I have also a large number of information on Volvo, generally speaking, which are part of a "never-ending collection" which I began in 1990. Some of them could be exchanged with another or simply sending to you as I have sometimes more than an exemplar. I have also some parts for Volvo 480 (body and interior).
If you would to conclude a fair deal, please write to me and I will look how I can help you.
I am also looking for genuine unused parts for a 1988' Volvo 480 and a 1990' Volvo 780 Coupé Bertone.
Best wishes

I am picking up my first Volvo 480 tomorrow, and i am trying to find things that i should look for when buying - i have been told to look out for the electrics, but they have all recently been re-done. This will be my first ever car - i'm 17, and the insurance is costing a fortune, but it is worth it for the individuality. Any other things to look out for?

I hate my own car to be lonely in Asia, although there is one more there in Japan, I am the only one 480ES car owner in Taipei, Taiwan. If guys and girls you happen to stop by Taipei, for business trip or just for tourism, please give me a call, and I have lots of questions like to ask you, since a single bird can not flock a crowd. so, make sure you stop in Taipei, give me a ring, and I will let you test my car to drive in the wild street jungle in Taipei.

Hi everyone!
While surfing 480 sites the other day I came across a site that among other useful 480 items also had the original accessories catalogue downloadble. But I have forgotten the address, can anyone help me finding my way back to it? I didn´t have the time to download it at that time and I also forgot to put it in to my favourites. That was foolish I know but as I now am in the need for the catalogue, please help me. I think it was a dutch site.

Great site.
I one bought a volvo 340 variomatic when I was 19 to own a cheap car that would last for about a year, after that year I was going to buy something like a golf gti or something, it went different.....
After that year I decided to continue driving volvo.
unluckily I recently crashed my 440, but I was unharmed (Viva Volvo).
in search for another car i stumbled over a really bad looking 480 turbo from 1989, but i'm sold...

I used to own a white 480ES 1.7i with 16" 5 spoke alloy wheels and I'd just like to say that it was the best car I have ever owned. I now drive a Ciroen Xantia Turbodiesel and every time I overtake I long to be in my 480 again. I would DEFINITELY buy another one and I hopefully will when I save some money. Next time I think I'll buy a 480 Turbo.
