Re: 1987 480 ES Project -- D-reg, 2nd oldest in UK
I haven't done any of the jobs above other than delivering it to a highly recommended body shop. Before this I was loving driving the car about and it was a real pleasure to do so. I'm really missing it as it's been a few months but it was fantastic to borrow Jeff's Turbo "Henry" for a week.
In the picture it looks like it's gone back a few steps but it was essential to secure the future of the car! There is rust that must be dealt with on the rear arches, hidden behind the front wings at the bottom and the lip above the rear lights. Plus a bit of surface rust on the jacking pads and a little hole in one of the rear footwells. Prior to this, in its first round of work it has had some holes welded up in the boot floor to.
I'm running it on waterless coolant which is great and runs without pressure on the old hoses. It does run hotter though and in the summer it can say 'STOP' on the Info Centre for a few seconds before it sorts itself out in a traffic jam. It is usual to run hotter on this stuff and it is fine but I would like to not see this message again as it is quite scary. I'm thinking of changing to the larger air con car type radiator and different top hose while the front bumper is off.
Anyone know whether it is just a different top hose (small one from header tank)?

I am not entirely sure whether to call that good or bad?
is it a pre winter check, or a full life threatening situation (for the car)
or is it not your car?
I am a bit confused, sorry
EDIT: Now I see! a very extensive (and expensive is assume) pre winter check, although it is certainly a very good idea. Good Luck!

Re: 1987 480 ES Project -- D-reg, 2nd oldest in UK
It's definitely good in the long run! I just miss not being able to jump in and drive her when I'm home.
It's not really a pre-winter check, more just getting round to finishing the extra bodywork jobs off which weren't essential to getting it back on the road. If anything it was a mid-summer check that has taken a while to get started properly!
The car looked great from a distance but it's been carrying some rust issues, which are minor really compared to most 480's but did need sorted before they got worse. It will come back without any rust anywhere and fully painted. I wanted to save the original paint but every panel had either temporary rattle can repairs from essential stuff to get it back on the road last year (windscreen frame and front roof, door frame, front wing, door hinge) or lacquer peel in small areas. It should be as good as new!
I've been told that it may be ready for the meet on 26th October... so fingers crossed for me please. I won't be rushing the bodyshop and accept that it will be done when it is done but it would be nice to be gleaming like Sylvia's freshly painted white beauty.

yes, mine still needs to be done, looking miserable outside in the rain, but at least it got out the other day. I think I will get speedo done professionally and then get it to the bodyshop, yellow primer clashes with Arctic Blue...jamescarruthers wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 12:17 pmIt's definitely good in the long run! The bodywork is progressing but at a very slow pace. I think they got me to drop the car off too early. Now the two that were ahead of me are done I am front of the queue. Things are accelerating now.

Re: 1987 480 ES Project -- D-reg, 2nd oldest in UK
So when the car first went in it looked pretty good in the wheel arch department and we were hoping to just split the rear arches by drilling out the spot welds, repairing the metal in small areas and joining them back up.
Clearly the 480's predisposition to rusting from the inside out hadn't been fully considered and here are the results chopping the arch lips off. I'm now having Skandix's repair panels delivered and going for the full re-arch extravaganza.
This is yet more evidence that we must all protect the INSIDE of our arches as soon as possible with corrosion preventative compount such as those trumpeted by Jifflemon (Bilt Hambler) or Dinitrol or LPS3 (what I've used on aircraft for years which are aluminium and love to corrode also)

Ok, may be best to stick to dinitrol and WD then! have you any other recommendations?jamescarruthers wrote: ↑Sun Nov 17, 2019 4:18 pmThese products are like Waxoyl but not shit and probably more deadly.

Re: 1987 480 ES Project -- D-reg, 2nd oldest in UK
No, I'm pretty sure they'll all give you cancer if you spray them. Wear a vapour mask (not a dust mask) and you can use the Bilt Hambler, Dinitrol LPS products safely. Add some thin gloves and some goggles for sure as well. Spraying is the only way to ensure a decent coverage to the extremes where corrosion likes to start, like between our wheel arch panels.
WD40 ,or any oil, is not suitable for corrosion prevention for any decent length of time and probably a very expensive way to do things. You need something that sets in place.
Waxoyl is just old hat now, don't waste your time and money on it. If it was ever any good it's probably not now as they'll have had to remove the stuff that is good for metal but bad for humans in order to sell it to the public easily at places like Halfords.
