Cool!

I love the forum-i love the car. It's a great little community-i've had a great time being a member, great time at the meet, and just great being part of something that is becoming such a rareity on the roads too. That's why i thought it was a shame that it seemed to be going downhill (in the spam sense/people getting fed up/general atmosphere etc)

I fully appreciate that life does exist out of the forum-and am more than gratefull and fully aware that this is a free forum and club-thats what makes it so good. I think the post started as people were generally sick of the constant barrage of spam-i have and had no personal axe to grind with anybody, nor i think did anybody else. It's good to have an update so people know where everyones at-and the spam prevention seem's to be holding out, which is good (although i did get lazy....i'm now back to looking for my own porn, instead of using the links-which is good, but hassle...)

I have thought before about people making an annual donation to run the club. I agree with Rohan, i'd be happy to pay something if that meant somebody could be employed to help run the forum/club. That would take pressure off you guy's and means somebody would be around more often-so if we wanted to have a winge or get something sorted there would be somebody about to help deal with it. Saves you guy's having to squeeze it into your day, but also prevents you getting pissed off doing it because you are busy and don't really have the time! (Thats not supposed to sound bad, you get what i mean)

I'm glad this whole post hasn't erupted into something major-i'm glad that everybody's aware of the situation and that the spam prevention is working. Perhaps we should start a new thread on how to maintain a satisfactory degree of moderation and ideas on how we can prevent this situation arising again in the future? And i don't mean 'cos no one is any good at their job, just as a preventative. Does anybody know someone that could 'share the load Master Frodo' and help out with the admin? The frustration comes mainly (as it does at work), when there's a temporary fix but no permanent soution-and thats not a dig!

It is and still can be a great forum-perhaps it is time for a mini overhaul?? :dunno:

Just my 2 pence :D

(Hope that didn't all sound too bad-it wasn't supposed to!)

With the mod Gaz installed it will stop spam bots from getting onto the forum so the problem is fixed, in the next 6-12 months or so the mod may need updating but that is a 2 minute job as its just changing the code. But for now, the forum should remain spam free for sometime.

On the subject of fees, judging by the 'comments' I recieved in the thread I post about them I think most people on here would be against them, although there is nothing stopping anyone from making a donation.

Whether it's "whinging like girls" or simply a groundswell of opinion, it worked. Thanks for sorting it out, I hope we can get back to normal now.

(please read references to "you" and "your" etc as being references to the collective userbase, not to you personally, Brasco.)

I think the point was missed. It wasn't because people were whinging on here that something got done, it's because someone (eventually) made me aware of the situation by contacting me OUTSIDE OF THIS FORUM (although even then, when I was contacted there was no way I could do anything about it - I had to actually risk my job and do the modifications during work time...)

Which kind of answers Rohans comment too - put simply, if something's wrong with the forum, and I haven't been logged in since it started, then theres NO POINT in trying to make me aware of the problem by posting ON HERE - that's why I said the better way IS email - all my email goes to the same place, and that's one thing that WILL be checked at least once every few days and 99% of the time, many times every single day.

To make it clear; whilst I am doing a full time job, a full time college course, a part time college course AND nursing a sick horse, I *WON'T* be on here very much, maybe at all! But that means I don't exist and not contactable, so use the contacts provided, rather than whine in a place where deep down you know it might not be seen - take responsibility - see something wrong? Use the contacts! I dont care if 20 people email me the same report - in fact that goes to highlight the severity, if 20 people are bothered enough to write me an email!

I remind you, it took 2 months for someone to make me aware of how bad the spam problem had got; most rational people presented with that fact would conclude that it can't be a major issue to most people then. I didn't know, I wasn't here, as my login times (as mentioned by someone) clearly showed - and when I was last here, the spam was an annoyance, but not out of control of the mods.

At the very least, if you're bothered by something enough to post a post here about it, but not an email, the at least post to the mlderators asking them to take on the responsibility of assessing the problem and if they think it's worth it, they can contact me via the other methods - how does that sound?

This is meant to be a community, but time and time again, I see things that annoy people enough to moan on here, but when asked to take it on and make people aware outside of the forum, the attitude that comes back is "it's not my forum, it's not my responsibility to do anything about it" - well I'm sorry, if this IS a community, then it's EVERYONE'S responsibility to do something about it - which includes making people who have the access aware, if they haven't been on here.

It's an ever evolving feeling of loss of community, coupled with a few "loud posters" here that means that more and more of the old crowd are here less and less, even when their time does permit. Lots of people have said it at meetings - and I'd hate for that to be lost!

You'd all do well to learn from the true community spirit that's shown on the Volvo Performance Club UKs forums...

Well I gotta say Gaz has a point.

He's not obliged to monitor the forum for threads bearing our frustration so until he is made aware of it we might as well just be moaning over a pint in the the pub. And when somebody contacted him about the situation, he stepped up and did something about it. Where's the problem? (rhetorical question / answers not required)

Maybe there is some kind of back history that I know nothing of, but from where I am standing Gaz has every right to feel peeved. If everybody is bitching about him doing nothing but none of us actually bothered to let him know that the problem exists then, yeah, he's gonna feel unjustly accused and he's right to put his case.

Until recently I didn't realise he was the only one that could actually do something about the spam and it didn't occur to me either that he won't see these threads but even if I had known I might not have contacted him as I would have left it to long term members or Mods. In fact I did leave it to the Mods to contact him. Maybe that is what is meant by taking some resposibility.

So, Thanks Brasco for kicking this discussion off.
Thanks, Wayne & Daniël for contacting Gaz.
Thanks Gaz for doing something.
That's my last word on it.
