aircon drive belt

Post by JimAitken » Mon Sep 26, 2016 8:30 am

Sounds like my aircon unit has shattered inside... lots of rattling noises like there's something broken being thrown around. Sounds dreadful. Can I simply remove the AC drive belt to disable it? And is it an easy job to remove belt? :cryhard:

easy to remove, YES, stanley knife
although it means you can't re-fit in future . . . . . . .

will it affect anything else, that depends on what else it drives

Thanks for the tip Alan... problem solved. I had a look to see what was on the same belt and discovered the belt was shredded and the rattling noise was coming from the shreds slapping everything down there. Cut off the shreds and it's now nice a quiet again, so now looking for replacement belts.... cheaper than a new compressor!! What a relief... didn't look forward to replacing that. :hopping:

thanks again

Done that a couple of weeks ago. Easy one.

Need to loosen the alternator tensor so it lowers a few cms, and you can replace it. Can be fully done from above.

600mm 3 channel belt.

Thanks... will change both belts at the same time. Where did you source your belt?

Any parts shop will have it or be able to have it under request.

I recently replaced the aircon drive belt on my 480 Celebration. The best way to access it is via the driver side front wheel arch.

I removed a Hutchinson belt marked 4K582 and replaced it with a Gates belt marked 4PK580. This indicates a belt with 4 peaks and an overall length of 580mm. The length is not that critical, so anything between 580 and 600 would do.

(4 peaks = 3 channels between the peaks).

Thanks for that tip. I couldn't work out how to get the belts replaced without bruised knuckles. Didn't think of tackling it via the wheelarch!
cheers

And take care not tighten the belt too much or you'll damage the alternator bearing.
This happen to my car. IT's a wide belt so I don't think it's going to slide loosen it a bit.
