It's probably not the calipers, but the cables that keep stretching, so you have to re-adjust the calipers to make up for it. Looking at my service history, they cost £30.88 + VAT each, in 2002. I can't believe they're worth that much. How different are they from, say, a brake cable for a push-bike? It might be a part you could fabricate yourself, for very little money.

I think what the manual's implying by self adjust, is simply the fact that they're disc brakes, so they stay balanced on both sides (hopefully!). My mini used to have drum-brakes all round, and was a nightmare, as they needed to be adjusted every couple of weeks, otherwise it'd pull to one side when you braked.
.... but I could be wrong!
£16/side isn't bad - I might have to get a couple for my other 480 then!

I disagree. They do indeed self adjust.
Unfortunately garages with neebie lackies instead of mechanics often destroy this function by g-clamping the pistons in, not reallising they are the wind back type.
You could have knackered calipers. It could also be other things like the cables, but the ela(is that right?) calipers do tend to experience stupid mechanic disease.
