I was under the impression that ALL turbo's had ABS. Are you sure that it's not just that the bulb has blown? I'd have thought the best way to find out for sure would be to try stamping on the brakes (whilst moving slowly, and with nothing behind you, obviously!)

On a 1990 480, if it does have ABS, the computer can be seen in the little cubby hole in the boot (the side with the aerial). If the cubby hole is empty, then it's not got ABS. If there's something in there, then it has!

This always confuses me when people say that, as on both of my 480s, which both have ABS, I have 2 perfectly empty and usable cubby holes, one on each side of the car... :dunno:

Mat's quite right. The MKI and MKII ABS computers live in the little cubby holes in the boot, and then in 1994 (I think), they moved to MKIV (not sure what happened to MKIII), and put it under the bonet.

The ABS light on my 480 glows orange momentarily when the ignition is switched on. This is to prove that the warning light is working. It then goes off. If it comes on while driving, or doesn't go out then it's indicating there is a fault.

It sounds like it could just be the bulb isn't working on yours..... especially if it doesn't come on initially when the ignition is switched on.

This might help for future reference. I know the picture is of a 440, but the wiring, and component locations are the same. The second diagram is the later MKIV ABS system (1994 onwards, I think):

Same here, it is possible to stop quicker without ABS if you are quick on the brakes

Yes, but the real value of ABS is that it does the 'cadence braking' for you & allows you to steer at the same time. Proved this recently at Millbrook.
Cheers, Chris.

I can ask why rally cars haven't got ABS? Because its easier to feel the grip without abs and its very important to brake on the boarder of grip. In normal cars abs is because some driver haven't got time or willingnesses to practice braking. I have so i don't want ABS in my car!!!! :)
no car, why drive a car if you can fly SAAB
