Volvo 480 - 2.0 TT 93' (Facebook)
Just noticed this one had popped up for sale. Looks nice but long ol' list of MOT issues with it. Thought id drop a link and photos for anyone that might be interested.

This wedge also on Facebook. The owner has been quoted a crazy price to get it roadworthy, something in the region of£1500 if I recall.

All fairly standard 480 failure items, but the stand out item for me is the dense blue smoke at idle
I guess that quote includes some engine surgery?

As I commented on Facebook....
Sound like an overly zealous MOT test to me.
Last 3 years the only advisory had been a sight blow from the exhaust.
Suddenly, every brake pipe is rotten, the whole underbody has rusted away and the engine is self destructing.....

Someone needs to send the White eBay 480 (Now at a pretty £2800) over to that tester, I dont know if they'd survive the shock.
Re: Volvo 480 - 2.0 TT 93' (Facebook)
Speaking of shocks, did you hear the story of the classic dealership unlucky enough to be selling a TT on the day the club was in town?

Re: Volvo 480 - 2.0 TT 93' (Facebook)
I was a bit disappointed when I found out that you could get a 2.0 in a TT, when I 'only' had the 1.7! Not that I would swap my car now of course... just maybe the engine...
Re: Volvo 480 - 2.0 TT 93' (Facebook)
the original object of the exercise was to produce a limited edition model to use up the remaining 1.7 engines. But it proved popular so Volvo kept making them, and like all other ES models it moved on to the 2.0i (leaving the 1.7 engine to just the S model).
This also ended any pretence that it was a limited edition, since there ended up being quite a lot of them!

no mention of parking brake failure?
see use of brick.
it does seem a very long list of 'normal' faults, if it has been sitting then the blue smoke could just be sticky rings?
The red one has been sitting now since March 2020 and SS1 since Oct 2019 , so lord knows what the emissions on them are going to be like
at least the SS1 is pre-cat so a few less potential issues?

Difficult to say isn't it? I never had these Renault engines down as big oil burners, I thought they were pretty bomb proof?
You could do a cylinder leakage test? Or perhaps get a borescope and check if everything is honed ok?
Either way, the conclusion is never good financially. The cat will be chocked - they don't like excessive hydrocarbons and it needs one for an MoT on a '93. A type approved cat is £100 straight off the bat.
Shame because I love a TT - Oli "100" has some really good pictures in his diary.
I had an old Citroen AX a good few years ago and that got the same failure "blue smoke at idle". Sadly that was the last MoT station visit E844TKG ever had.... for that very reason...

The 2.0 was a Volvo unit I seem to remember, not Renault, but yeah still bomb proofJay-Kay-Em wrote: ↑Wed Dec 16, 2020 7:18 pmDifficult to say isn't it? I never had these Renault engines down as big oil burners, I thought they were pretty bomb proof?

Are you sure? My understanding is all 400 petrols are loosely based on Renault F3 or F4 petrols.
Are you thinking of the 300.... where only the two litre had the Volvo engined B200 (a reduced capacity B21 red block, badged 360GLT) instead of the 1.4 and 1.7 Renault lumps?

As it's an L reg, same as my beloved Snazzy, I'm wondering if it's also got a smokey red dipstick engine. If so blue smoke is nothing to get concerned about, just needs to be thoroughly warmed up before the mot, although I believe Mr Pedantic does a few minor adjustments before and after.
Sylvia
Snazzy - 1993 Paris Blue ES red dipstick 2.0i bought 2001
Lethal Lily - 1991 White Turbo
Paris the Unicorn - 1991 Paris Edition
hubby has
Sven - 1994 Racing Green GT
Evil Eva - 1992 Paris Blue Turbo
no previous 480s - can't bear to sell any

Many of the sources I have read have said something along the line of: "the underpowered Renault unit was later replaced by a 2.0 Volvo unit"Jay-Kay-Em wrote: ↑Wed Dec 16, 2020 10:59 pmAre you sure? My understanding is all 400 petrols are loosely based on Renault F3 or F4 petrols.

2.0 is just a bored out 1.7. Simples. Car journalism is mostly lazy, poorly researched rubbish.

and sadly lots of the 'cross reference charts' are also guilty.jamescarruthers wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 12:52 pm2.0 is just a bored out 1.7. Simples. Car journalism is mostly lazy, poorly researched rubbish.
nobody will correct them either cos the 'computer is always correct'
we get same issue with front discs on an SS1, every ruddy book insists they are Metro discs, but they are bespoke, the calipers ARE metro, hence the obvious conclusion
I'm also intriged by Sylvia's comments about the tweaks, might need some pointers
