Volvo 480 book

Cleaned up the garage and found some parts you want to sell? Or are you looking for that one part? You can advertise or request just about anything that has to do with the Volvo 480 in here: brochures, towing-hooks, antenna's, etc etc...

Volvo 480 book

Post by dragonflyjewels » Fri Aug 07, 2020 3:23 pm

Delighted to say that the Dutch book about the 480 I have been English-language editing and partially re-writing is finally finished. :D
It starts with the background of Volvo coupes and follows the 480 from conception right through to the end of production. Along the way it sheds light on some of the mysteries of the 480. There are loads of photos I have never seen before plus anecdotes by Volvo employees involved in the design, planning and production. Also one of the authors is a talented draughtsman so there are some of his illustrations as well.
No details yet on when it will be available to buy but be sure I will post on here as soon as I know.

Not quite ! I've been editing the google translate version, much of which might just as well have been in Dutch ! It's been a long slow haul, firstly to make sense of what it's supposed to say and put it into understandable English and then to re-write some parts to reflect the UK perspective and market. All been very worthwhile though.

I'm just waiting for the gobbledegook text to post on here for ordering info - just for a laugh I might post it un-edited

OK, I have now received the text and it was really very good - I think Eric's English has benefitted from my constant emails so I seem to have been giving English lessons as well !

Update 25th August 2020

Today I am pleased to announce that the Volvo 480 book is available to order in the English version, 'The Volvo Coupés'.
After more than a year of translating and rewriting, the job is done. My thanks go to Sylvia from Great Britain who has a keen interest in the Volvo 480 and who has put in a lot of work to read everything and correct the texts where necessary.
We also had to rewrite entire sections between us. We are happy that it all worked out and is finally finished.

The proof was sent to the printer on Monday 24th August and I hope to see a copy at the end of the week.

If you are interested in ordering a copy, you can contact me at vanaubeldesign@gmail.com

I'm not sure there would be any benefit to them shipping a quantity of copies to me since the hope of meetings is rapidly fading. I will tell Eric I'm willing to send them on by post but I think the saving on the bulk shipping will probably be outweighed by the addition of UK postage. There are photos or drawings on every page, so it will be on art-quality paper which is a heavier weight and as a private publication in low numbers, small print runs will make it more expensive too. I don't think Eric will know the price until he knows the quantity, so it's likely to be a catch-22 situation.
Anyway, drop him an email if you want a copy and see what he comes back with.

Eric tells me he will be ordering the print run shortly, but he only has 15 confirmed orders. Another run seems unlikely as there is so little interest, so if anyone wants a copy and hasn't yet ordered you need to get an email off to him pronto !

I guess the problem is the lack of price - Chicken and egg scenario, but I'd guess people don't want to commit if it's going to hugely expensive.

Just received an email from Eric with more information on the book:

Price
The book contains about 172 pages in two-colour and full colour, size 28x28cm. with a hard cover. From experience with having the Dutch edition made, the price of the English version will be about 65 euros excluding shipping costs for an edition of about 100 copies.

The Idea
In 2007 we had an idea to write a book about the Volvo 480. The 480 was the first front wheel drive Volvo car which was launched on the carmarket in 1986. A car designed in Helmond and built in Born, the Netherlands. Because of it's - for Volvo - extraordinary design and it's features and more we felt that there should be a book that provides insight into the way and why of this car. So......

Finally, after a long time, the Volvo Coupé-480 book is done. We (Tom & Eric) want to thank all the people who made it possible for us to write this book for their involvement, their cooperation and their time. At the Interclassics exhibition in Maastricht (the Netherlands) 2018 we will present the book at our stand.

An English version
Because there was interest in an English version of the Volvo Coupe-480 book we have decided to translate the Dutch version into an English one. I have largely done that translation myself and this is currently being checked and edited. After these adjustments, an English version of the book will be available.

Update 25th August 2020
Today I am pleased to announce that the Volvo 480 book is available to order in the English version, 'The Volvo Coupés'. After more than a year of translating and rewriting, the job is done. My thanks go to Sylvia Lawson-Brown from Great Britain who has a keen interest in the Volvo 480 and who has put in a lot of work to read everything and correct the texts where necessary.

We (Sylvia and I) also had to rewrite entire sections. We are happy that it all worked out and is finally finished. Sylvia did a great job!

The proof was sent to the printer on Monday 24th August and I hope to see a copy at the end of the week. If you are interested in ordering a copy, you can contact me at vanaubeldesign@gmail.com

I think I am going to talk to Eric. There is a huge market for the English version, 100 copies should be no problem at all, and financial backing is also not an issue.

I have also enquired via email to Eric.
As I am not UK based the shipping costs will be different...
Thank you Sylvia & everyone involved!
Just got my first 480 (August 2020)!
1990 ES 1.7, Superwhite
I have ticked off around 45 items, cosmetic and mechanical
Remaining:
- Vibration at 1500 RPM (hard to locate)
- Rough idle (harder one)
- Touch-ups
- Change rims (Pollux to slightly fresher Atlas)
- install my “new” flawless door pocket
I also just bought a 2004 XC90.
