Wanted: Main Pressure Switch...?

Cleaned up the garage and found some parts you want to sell? Or are you looking for that one part? You can advertise or request just about anything that has to do with the Volvo 480 in here: brochures, towing-hooks, antenna's, etc etc...

Wanted: Main Pressure Switch...?

Post by edie_fox » Fri Oct 16, 2020 7:00 pm

Hi All.

I got an email off the man where my car is asking if I can source a part. I have replied and asked for clarification and perhaps a photo pointing at what is missing but, if anyone on here can immediately say "Oh, yes, you need this" :rtfm: that would be great!

Email:

"We have had a good day on the Volvo I can tell you lots of things that’s not wrong with it but still don’t know the main culprit. We need a main pressure switch of the pump unit so we can eliminate yours unfortunately the one on the unit you have is missing, can you locate one for us?"

Thank you!

Update....
got this email. This help explain better?

“The part I need is on the abs pump its the only electrical switch on it I would use the one on the spare unit you provided but it's been removed.”

Anyone got a spare? Can anyone send me a photo of what this part looks like?

It sounds like you are having a nightmare!

I am sending you via email the Volvo Green books for the Teves Mk. II ABS system that is fitted to your car (and all ABS equipped 480's up to 1992). If the garage don't have this they need it! (Also the general brakes book is coming too, but this is less useful but nice to provide both to them). It shows how to make the car's ABS light flash to give error codes and also how to check resistances and voltages on the pressure switch unloaded and loaded with pressure.

I have never personally had trouble with the Teves Mk. II when I had a 480 with it fitted. However, it seems from this forum that in time the ALL need the accumulator recharged or replaced. I am not suggesting that you do that first as it is very expensive at £250, but you are lucky that they are still available due to the system being fitted to Jaguars. Available here: https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.co ... r-kit.html

I had a quick look online and the Teves Mk II system was fitted to these cars:
  • 1985 to 1989 Lincoln Continental
  • 1985 to 1992 Lincoln Mark VII
  • 1986 to 1989 Buick LeSabre
  • 1986 to 1990 Buick Electra, Park Avenue
  • 1986 to 1989 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham
  • 1986 to 1990 Cadillac DeVille
  • 1986 to 1990 Oldsmobile 98
  • 1986 to 1990 Pontiac 6000 STE
  • 1987 to 1992 Ford Thunderbird
  • 1987 to 1992 Mercury Cougar
  • 1987 to 1993 Saab 9000
  • 1988 to 1989 Cadillac Eldorado, Seville
  • 1988 to 1989 Buick Reatta, Riviera
  • 1988 to 1989 Merkur Scorpio
  • 1988 to 1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88, Toronado
  • 1988 to 1991 Peugeot 505
  • 1988 to 1990 Pontiac Bonneville & SSE
  • 1991 to 1993 Saab 900
  • 1991 to 1993 Volkswagen Passat
  • maybe Golf Mk. 2
  • Range Rover of some sort
  • Jaguar XJ6 & XJ12 and XJS
I think the Saab part number is 8994071 (Ref: https://www.saabpartscounter.com/oem-pa ... NC1nYXM%3D_)

When you search for this number, a UK SAAB parts company have the new switch in for £164.81 (Ref: https://www.saabits.com/all/saab-900-90 ... ure-sensor).

I cannot guarantee that it is the right part, but I think it is pretty likely. Can you get your garage to send you a picture of the part? Does it look like this?

Hopefully the SAAB place actualy has it in stock as that is the only UK supplier I can see. If not, this should help your search:

Pressure switch
ATE Part Number 8994071
ACDelco Part Number 25530882
Saab part number 8994071

I couldn't see the switch listed separately in the Volvo parts catalogue. Not that they'd have it in stock now anyway!

Accumulator
AC Delco Part Number25528382
Saab 4002267
Jaguar JLM1907
ATE 10.0514-9003.1

Some Jaguar people are using Bosch 0265202070 which I am not sure is the same or just equivalent to the originals above. But if it is sufficient to stop a fat jag, it should stop a weeny-wedge. Available for £80 an Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-02652020 ... B00C7SILGS

If I had a Teves Mk. II system I would absolutely 100% be putting a new, fully charged accumulator on it. I would recommend you do too!

:hopping: Thank you, James. All very helpful. I'll forward to him now....fingers crossed.

I'm SO excited about getting it back. I'm going to drive it a LOT!

EDIT: They don't have the part! Apparently it's missing off my car!? Is that possible? I'm wondering if it's gone missing at one of the other garages.

I read their report that they suspect the pressure switch on your 480 is dead and they wanted to try the spare pressue on the spare pump that you supplied but someone has already nabbed it!

Can they send a pic of the pressure switch on your car, just to compare it to the picture I posted for piece of mind that I'm not recommending you buy random bits of SAAB for no reason!?

I’ve sent them all details and links/numbers you sent and the images so hopefully they might have one..... I thought they were saying that neither are present!

I’m sure he’ll email when he gets time on it again.... see where we’re at....😁

If it is just to confirm the fault is caused by said switch then I'd jury-rig a simple on/off switch into the line as a quick check that when the ECU thinkspressure is there then the system works OK, not much help though if there is a hole where the pressure switch should be :(

but maybe it is a fancy type of three wired switch?

the switch seems rediculously fancy from looking at the troubleshooting of it! It has loads of connectors for some reason!

I though maybe just three, so that ECU would also do a 'sanity' check to prevent folk 'bypassing' it :cryhard:

I think all those infinity signs blew my brain but I guess its not that complicated if it is just sensing operating pressure and a warning pressure over 5 pins.

it would have been easier to put in a Pressure sensor with an analogue output , then feed the signal to the ECU.. cos it is all controlled by an ECU so pretty simple to have 'another channel' that is a 1 - 5V input ? voltage would have done anything you need???

but still the various pressures could be 'mimiced' by suitable choice of resistors? just need a mating plug :-(

Blimey. I think I just want one of those cars where you can see grass below the engine bay and there's just a rubber band and a matchbox after all this!

I've just sent him those screenshots. I am fearful of bombarding him with information but, of course, without it it could be a lot longer/harder work and know everyone here knows best when it come to 480 ailments!

Thanks guys :)

Did you send the PDFs I sent you? They'd probably appreciate all of the info not just a snippet. The ability to read fault codes with the ABS light is in there too which might save a lot of work!

Hi James
Yes, sent all of that yesterday. I offered to buy the switch and have it sent to them. I did get an email back saying "yes, that's the one" so whether or not he intends to get one, I'm not quite sure as he didn't say 'yes, go ahead and buy it'.

He sent another email later last night saying it definitely isn't the accumulator so I'm just waiting for the next step now.....
