A Sorry Looking Celebration (Given a Lifeline as R2!)

Post by Jay-Kay-Em » Sat Aug 08, 2020 10:33 am

Not actually advertised as a Celebration but I just spy the plaque and the "480 only" badge.

Here

Is it on Sylvia's database?

N993PUD by the look of it.... although no V5 to verify that which breaks the golden rule of purchasing without a V5!

It wasn't on the register but it is now - Jeff spotted it this morning as well. Have already messaged the seller in the hopes of more info. Also been debating R2 !! Like buses, nothing worth buying for months, now this.... Anyone local enough to go and check it out ?

I find myself worrying about this one. The seller has kindly supplied details for the Celeb register. I also asked for close up pics of the wheel arches rear lights drivers bolster and pedal rubbers. All look good. Anyone near enough to call in and check it over ?
Bidding on it stopped when the GT got listed, at the moment it's on breaker money. Leather interior plus one perfect rear light would show a profit before they start taking mechanical bits off.
If it doesnt go much higher I'd be willing to fund buying it and Jeff could store it until R1 is sold but a look over would be good.
Blasted buses!!

This would be a very sad car to break. It looks like the archetypal one elderly owner car with only 40,000 odd miles and not used since 2012.As far as I can see it would need very little to get it back on the road, probably new cam belt, discs, pads and calipers a service and maybe tyres. The headlamp cover is there and hopefully the radio front panel. It will need one rear lamp, one driving lamp a couple of side light lenses and an indicator lamp lens and a battery. It even has the rear parcel cover, As Sylvia mentions the seats are probably very good. The seller states that it runs, which may be a shame as the fuel is possibly very stale, but on the other hand you know it is not seized.
This is an ideal chance for someone to have an air conditioned Celebration in perhaps the best colour! It is always a risk as photos often seem to be better than the real thing, but even the paintwork looks like it would polish up.
I have tried to get one of my friends to buy it,(he is thinking about it) but Mansfield is a long way from Kent. This is one that should be saved and not broken for spares to sit on somebodies shelf.

Hmmm...auction ends 3pm or so, 14th, which is this Friday afternoon. I take it that the bidders are not on here - or at least not so as are willing to admit?

As has been said it looks too good to be broken; just the fact it is one of the dwindling number of Celebrations means it ought to be saved if possible, and it does look as if with a little TLC it could quite quickly become a good car.

Can't promise - it's near Mansfield, Derbyshire, so not exactly on my doorstep but not a million miles either. I'll see if tomorrow might allow an opportunity to go take a look...

David, if you could get over to look at it that would be great. Al is onboard with saving it so I have been arguing with myself all afternoon on how much I should bid for it. I see maybe £1000 for the n/s rear light cluster/near perfect interior/rear roller cover but I suppose how much a breaker would be prepared to pay for it depends on how far they are willing to strip it down and how much labour would go into it. I have no idea...

Here are the photos they sent me (quite surprised they didn't add them to the ebay listing)

The driver's seat bolster and pedal rubbers tell me the low mileage is genuine. That nearside rear cluster looks as though it wasn't on the car very long before it got written off. It's what's behind the seemingly good rear wheel arches that's the worry.

I'm assuming the car was vandalised as I can't see any sign of accident damage on the body panels - perhaps the n/s pop-up was stuck up at the time ?

Comments welcome !!

no v5 means 'is it nicked?'

although if they are breakers then it CAN be re-registered? subject to DVLA?

type that number into 'is it SORN' on DVLA website and 'there is a problem' suggesting it IS written off?

so REALLY sad that a 'good car' can be scrapped :-(

Jeff has done an HPi check, it's a cat c write off (just one broken light cluster in 2011 would write it off). Not a problem, our blue turbo was a cat c as well and got a V5 without difficulty - just vehicle identity check and presumably an mot or similar condition check.
This one came up as not stolen, the only other thing that was flagged up was a registration change - it was on a private plate up to 2008. As it's only had 2 previous owners, I'm assuming the private plate was the first owner and came off when owner one sold the car to owner two. As Jeff has pointed out, the Goodyear Eagle tyres would indicate a well looked after car.

Well, the price is creeping up but still only breaker money. I'll be bidding by snipe in the dying seconds of the auction - if I get outbid I think it'll be going to someone who actually wants it. If that's you, send me a pm !

This one will go into dry storage until R1 is finished and back on the road. Then Jeff will move on to working on R2. (or maybe it will be chaos-style, I'm sure he's as keen as us to find out if there's any hidden problems). The best outcome would be for R1 to sell for a decent price to safe hands in order to re-imburse us for R2 and maybe turn a small profit for the pot. We'd like to get R2 back on the road and sold similarly so we could move on to R3. PLEASE no more bus syndrome, I can't handle another one yet but I'm a real sucker for a worthy cause.

The worst outcome for R2 would be if we discovered a hitherto unsuspected problem which explained why it just went into store instead of having the lights sorted, and meant it just isn't viable to rescue. In that case the backup plan would be to sell the interior/rearlight cluster/rear roller cover and alloys in order to recoup our costs and put some more cash in the rescue pot. Any parts Jeff can remove for the pool parts store would come off and the rest sent for scrap :badmood: NOT what we want at all, but we have to be practical. Now we know the engine isn't seized I'm much more optimistic, but there is a limit to what we can ask Jeff to do alongside a full time job and looking after his own 3 480s not to mention a few more projects.

If we can make a small profit on each car we sell we could maybe build up a big enough fund to think about paying for any major work needed on a future rescue but of course we would need to consult with our donors.

Currently we have £250 in the pot - Al and I donated the cost of trailer hire and fuel to rescue R1 and Jeff has so far spent about £2 - he knows how tightly I hold the purse strings! We have been given some parts so we haven't yet had to spend any more than the purchase price.

Good luck for R2.... I guess it still hangs in the balance V5 allowing etc.

Look forward to the assessment. Any Celebration is worth saving and it's commendable.

My worries about the lack of V5 largely evaporated when Jeff sent me the HPi report - the words 'not stolen' were reassuring, as was a chassis no that matched the one the scrapyard gave me for the register. My remaining concern is that the wording against the Cat c write off is 'extensively damaged'. To me, some smashed lights isn't extensive damage but I can't think what else might be damaged that isn't visible. Maybe it was the parts estimate that was extensive, or the length of search needed to source them !
