A pool 480?

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

A pool 480?

Post by jifflemon » Sat Jul 18, 2020 5:15 pm

We discussed this a while ago, so here we go again....

I've the opportunity to save what looks like a very solid 480; its owner has tried to sell it (for a reasonable figure), and is now running out of time & patience, and is on the verge of breaking it for parts.

Now ask yourself would you break this for parts?

Yes that tiny bit on the sill appears to be the worse of the bodywork - Look at those arches!

and there's this:

So why haven't I snapped it up already and started a thread?

Well, you may not have noticed, but I've already got one or two projects on the go. And whilst I'm the sort of person that thrives on being busy working on cars, what I'm not very good at, is selling cars. It's also nearly 110 miles from me, and with no current MOT, and a couple of electrical gremlins, getting it back to me could be "challenging".

So, would there be interest in having a club car?

Happy for it to work in many ways - I'm more about saving a 480 from being broken - and can offer not only my time and labour, but somewhere for it to stay.

So..... Discuss.

What Year is the car? Looks very straight to me, but I have one already in that colour (albeit much worse bodywork wise) however I think a pool car is a good idea!

That's very good indeed, well worth saving, how long as it been off the road?

Al is happy to volunteer to use the Saab to take a car trailer down to collect the car and return it to Jiff. I'm happy to volunteer to act as treasurer if we set up a rescue group (retired accountant). We are also willing to make a donation towards the purchase price and parts needed to get it running.

We are both horrified at the idea of breaking it.

If we go ahead with the idea of a pool car we need to discuss things like long-term objectives, who owns the car and what happens if we dissolve the group for any reason in the future.

My suggestion would be:
1. the inital donations are non-refundable unless the group has to be dissolved
2. once the car is roadworthy we use it as a pool car until we find a buyer willing to pay what it has cost us (more would be great!)
3. the money from the sale is then used to buy the next 480 worth saving and we start the process over again
4. In the event of Jeff no longer being in a position to work on the cars and / or store them we try to find someone else to take over from him but if we are unable to then we sell the final car and divide the proceeds amongst the donors on a pro-rata basis, ie. if the donations totalled say £1000 but the car only sells for £800 then the donors would only receive 80% back.

All input very welcome, if anyone has any better ideas please make your suggestions so we can all chat about it. A rough idea of how many kind people are willing and able to help with costs would be useful. Also anyone else with useful expertise (is there another accountant in the house ?) Offers of parts would also be great - this stash oop north could be the start of a central parts store for the club.

Would it be an idea to do like a crowdfunding page but keep it very personal and private so as to keep track of who has a share?

Just a thought :dunno:

Loving all of the above! :hopping:

Just cos I'm working on the car doesn't mean I'm not donating to the fund either!

MoT fails aren't tooo bad at all.

I don't actually know how the crowdfunding works - does anyone know if details of donors are supplied to the recipient ? I thought it was just cash you give with no return ? If I was treasurer, I wouldn't want to end up with a pot of money belonging to people I couldn't trace. Has anyone done a crowdfunding project ?

I know you can do a money pool with PayPal; that’d give you a name and email address

Paypal sounds like a better idea - I've just been reading advice on crowdfunding and it's way over the top for the sort of thing we want to do. Lots of work to set it up as well.

Paypal moneypool looks a lot more straightforward.

Reading this post gives me dejavu. DC and myself were only this morning talking about the pool car idea. I am all in favour of it and this wedge looks like it could be an ideal candidate. I went and looked at Wills ES today with this in mind, sadly although it’s got an MOT the arches are a bit tatty and it has one two other problems(sorry Will). On the plus side it has some of the best rear lights I have seen. Anyway count me in on this although crowdfunding would not be the way to go. Keep me informed please

Count me in as a participant in the PayPal group fund to save this car. I think this will be a way forward for a good few cars that come to market in the next couple of years, and if it means we preserve the marque a little longer, then that can only be a good thing.

I’m in - £100 would be my contribution.
Would like to chip in more but I suspect there are some heavy bills coming up on my cars.
Awaiting details.

I've just setup the Paypal pool - it's called Volvo480rescue. I've set the target at £750 - it's £500 to buy the car plus there will presumably be parts to pay for and MoT test fee.

All donations very gratefully received !!
