Earlier models had a side shield both sides; later ones (at least, 2.0 l) only had one on driver's side.

If yours is missing I have a spare driver's side one...

Is the bonnet sitting properly closed along its side seals? I can't understand why the engine is getting so wet - cleaning those drain holes will have helped though!

Don't think the under bonnet insulation will make any difference to water ingress...

David
I think the autos only have a drivers side one because of the bulk of the autobox.

Water in the screen area is expected (and should drain away). Some of the under bonnet looks like is could be condensation? I'm wondering if the standard "foam" insulation would absorb it, then vaporise it once some engine heat is added?

So, this time it was the rotor arm. He’s fitted what I had, plus dis cap and spark plugs. He didn’t fit the leads I bought as they wouldn’t sit correctly and weren’t very good but the originals are fine. So that’s good news!

He was thinking the same, I need to get the bonnet sound proofing and insulation finished. This must be causing the condensation/water to get onto everything. So, should really do that before he goes to bed. Will bring giant paper to make template of someone else’s at meeting! He did say all seals and covers were good.

In other good news (this is rare!) Sailed through MOT. Just needed the number plate bulb I planned on getting sorted before it broke down/went in for booked MOT.

Also just called Volvo for service quotes. I didn’t have a pen but it was something like; minor was around £150-170 and major was around £250/270.

Leaving service until April.

Great news on the MoT - I'll bring my templates along to the meet for the two side panels so you can copy them.

I thoroughly recommend you leave the service til April - I've always taken the view that it's better to have an older car looked at twice a year than once so ours all have service and MoT 6 months apart.

Thanks, Sylvia :D Yes, no point in putting nice new fluids in and whatnot when he'd benefit more from a fresh set after the sitting winter.

Re: the insulation/deadening. I'm having trouble finding anything of quality (and 20-25mm) that doesn't have the heat resistant metallic layer. A) Will this be a risk...electrically. I know Jeff mentioned that. And B) I fear it won't sit quite as comfortably around things and then water/condensation will just flow down it as it does the nakey bonnet at present. Has anyone else used a modern kind...with or without the metallic layer?

The originals have a metal layer, but it's the side stuck to the bonnet, and there should be earthing clips to attach to it. Go for one layer with the metal and one without if you can only find self adhesive, then you can stick the two sticky sides together and glue the metal layer to the bonnet. Just make sure they combine to the right thickness et voila !

not convinced the sound proofing is an issue, the other cars i have had are either naked GRP or sandwiched GRP

water is getting in from other areas?

I think it gets in via the vents on bonnet, trickles down the inside of the bonnet then sits there and condensates further eventually dripping on all of the components/engine. I know the foam fits around things so, I'm guessing, is almost touching everything and not quite as easy to just flow down as bare metal and huge spaces!

I am a bit dubious of the metallic face on the newer ones though....I feel like it is equally as likely to run down that too! I will do it but it won't be until after I've seen an original one on someone else's. :)

The man who just fixed it and did the MOT said all the rubber seals and the side protection plastics are in place and good. The vent is the only place it can be flowing in from (besides spraying back off the road).

Congrats on the MOT - I am pleased for you that at least this car isn't all problems!

I assume from the discussions about under-bonnet templates you are coming to the Lincolnshire meet; I look forward to seeing you and the car again! following up on your thread the other day, did you want me to bring that jack set with me?

Ever so sorry, David, I must have missed a reply somewhere along the way. If you have a set suitable, that would be great. Let me know how much you would like for it :D Yes, I'm coming from Tattersall Castle and onwards as I'm not far from there so seems a bit mad (although I do love a good convy  ) to go down the night before and pay for a hotel to come back up again! Haha. Well.....I'm coming if he's having a good day anyway! It is always the same kind of electrical non-start issue. Getting through them though! I think it was sat 2000-2017 so more use is weeding out the issues and gradually repairing and renewing things. Luckily, I'd already gathered a few bits so it was all there to be done once they figured it out. I has been different things each time. I am still a bit weary about the battery....I'm sure it's draining faster than it perhaps should.... We'll see!

Yes! The car itself is good, this is all fixable niggles....must not give up....must not give up...must not give up. :wall: I know I'd only want another. We've all done it!

Jeff...Yes, that's the stuff they recommended I put on top of the thin layer I'm on with (ok it's been months since I 'got on' with it!)...I'm a bit scared of the metallic top layer. Feel like it may just still let water run along it but, I guess it should sit snug on things and keep it totally off? Oh, the issues.

Thought I'd post an update whilst we're all clock watching waiting for springtime to kick in!

Took the 480 out of his carcoon today. Last time he was out was new year (after going in just before Christmas). Originally, I thought it would be better left with the windows cracked so air could circulate. Bad idea. This caused mould to begin to grow within 3 weeks. So, when I put him back, I closed the windows, put three £1 dehumidifiers in and left the rear zip open on the inside of the carcoon (this is supposedly for drying - you're meant to close it after a day but....that means opening it all up again so, I gave it a try with it left open and was fine. It's an internal layer, not exposed to outside). This time it was great inside no signs of cold, damp or mould. It's in a very exposed area. Open fields and usually 4 degrees colder out there than anywhere else as soon as you get out on the road! So, yes, I'm happy with the carcoon purchase now.

I do have a problem......(wouldn't be a 480 if I didn't!). I took the it out just after new year as, at the time, I owned a '94 Rover 216 that was poisoning me with its fumes and I needed to go on a longer trip. Didn't fancy the CO poisoning so taxed the 480. It seemed slow at first and I just thought this was due to lack of use and it needing to warm up. Then, after about 100 or so miles (of a 200 mile trip), I got a new noise, a lack of power and bunny-hopping when it should have been turbo time. So, back in the carcoon, he went. Anyway, whatever it might be this time, I'm not thinking about it until it's cash injection time (April). Took it out today to see how bad it was. Still there, so...meh. Whatever. Later....

April will see it get a full service, interior/exterior detailing and many other update/preservation bits and bobs....above job is priority of course.

Attending the 600 in June but not sure about the May meet until nearer the time! Will go to a few Lincs shows again. I haven't had him a year yet but not far off. Plenty of £ spent and much more to come but hopefully all worth it. Insurance due April too. Currently with Flux Direct with an agreed value at a very reasonable £130. Will shop around though.

In other news; the 480 also became a daddy! :hopping:

Haha, thank you. :) I bought the plate a while ago after planning on it for a number of years! ....saved it in the hope of one day having a 2013 C30 to go with a 480! Goals n'all.

Well, how is everyone doing trapped at home? Those with the capabilities must be ploughing through the to-do list!

We got him out today to take some photos for the Reg Transfers mag that I've been promising the guy. Fox does show a lot more interest in driving recently. Always wants to get in and have a go!

So, finally tracked down the mobile mechanic who I kept seeing driving around locally. He's coming at the end of April to sort it's current issue, finger crossed. Think it's fuel pump but won't know til he gets looking I guess. At least I can use it then! It drives but I don't want to push it (both figuratively and literally!). I managed to get some VPower the other day from 'not my nearest garage' so I've put that in before Shell shut!

Insurance and breakdown are due today. Insurance was quoted at £96, which was great but I may end up paying more as, like many others, I'm currently incomeless so, It'll have to wait a few weeks and sort it then.

Hope you're all well! Here's Fox and I with our respective vehicles. :D

Well, what are bank holidays for if you can't do 480 things?

I'm going to see what I can achieve in the light restoration sense today.

Starting small with the DRLs. I intended to replace these but....I think they are superglued in place. Whatever clear, glossy glue is holding them in is rock hard and there is just no way and I can get them off without breaking the units...which also means I can't refresh the reflective silver inside...I don't like doing half a job
So, I'll just restore them for now. No cracks in the DRL or indicator lenses so hopefully they should just come up better. Then I'll move onto the rears once I'm satisfied this will work ok!

I'm using a mix of (is it Will and Oli's?) the suggested method here with the wet and dry etc then using the Meguiars two-step kit for polish and coating.

I'll be back later with tears or a happy success story plus before and afters!

Hope you all have nice 480 things to do today too. My dash is currently in NL and I can't wait to have that working again! Gradually went down hill as the months went on until the cold and damp (pre-Carcoon life) totally killed it.

Well, that was a satin letdown.

I think I'll just leave it for now as it's an improvement on just dry lenses but needs to be glossy. My polishing skills are minimal as I tried mechanical on the DRLs and it didn't go well, probably due to incorrect tools (not multi-speed and crap pads off eBay). I did try a a quick patch on the rears (didn't want to do too much....) and it looked no different from my hand polishing.

So, I did the rear using grease de elbow. It looks better but at the same time....it could be much better in gloss next to that tailgate. I'll re-do them next year....better.

DRLs look good but can't really see the difference when they're back on the car.

Too much dull on the rears but tidier all the same.

So, not really much of an update as I haven't seen him since June. ...he's been in three garages. Not seen anything of him but a dodgy image posted online of him stood out in the street at the second garage looking like he'd been outside on the road and parked under a tree for a year. :wife:

Anxiety is at record levels seeing that and just want him home ASAP. MOT runs out on October 31st but highly unlikely I'll get him back by then even. At least the miles are staying down, eh...

I've had the noise of possible fuel pump since January on and off. Then on a really hot day in May, just as I drove away from getting him booked in for paint work on the tiny bit of rust under drivers door....the ABS/STOP lights came on.

Cancelled the just booked paint work and took it to the Volvo specialist......He called a few days later with the fault codes and saying he thinks it needs an auto electrician and there is now 2% braking power. So, I had to collect it and drive it home staying very far away from anything else.

Booked it in the the AE who had wonderfully fixed two previous electrical issues. It went in about 20 June. I called in July...lots of sighing on his part "he'll get to it".
Went along a month later to drop off some green books. More sighing, going self-employed but "I'll get to it".
Called a month later, when he told me to...still not got to it. I offered to remove it of it was a burden numerous times.
Called me in September "I think it just needs to go back to the mechanic".

I've never had this kind of issue with him or anyone before. It really is "Oh, sod it, it's just a cheap old Volvo, I'm not interested." And, of course, I am (un)lucky enough to be a lowly female. :dunno:

Whilst at the 480 scrap yard the guy there called his friend who recommended a classics guy in Barnetby (Dennis Vessey). He seems to deal with more vintage sports/performance vehicles but had lots of equipment and what seemed like a good team and history. So, £100, they transported it there 2 weeks ago.

He's just called and they are on with it over the next few days to at least start looking into it. I've said just go ahead and replace the fuel pump and filter as I'm happy to just renew anything that may be an issue. Hopefully he'll do that and that will remedy the noise problem. Then there is still the ABS issue. Will update on this madness as I get updates in this area. I miss it so much. It's inside now but spending the summer out in the rain probably hasn't done it any favours.

Will update on my part hoarding later...got to go out..... :)

Well, I would have been going out if the C30 battery wasn't flat. That's now on charge. Headlights usually turn off with ignition but for some reason, side-lights do not - no warning. I know this now. ;)

Anyway. Once the 480 is back on the road, whenever this may be, I won't hold my breath... I have been gathering parts to renew all the suspension etc. I'll pop a list here and do chip in if you think I'm missing anything, grateful to know. Jeff has had around 75 texts a day already. Sorry.... (Seriously needs to consider giving up the day job to be full-time 480 carer).

- Bilstein B4s front & rear.
- Stabiliser links Front R/L
- Stabiliser links Rear
- Strut mount bearing front x2
- Strut mounting front R/L
- Rear rubber suspension buffers
- Front dust covers and buffers
- Stabiliser rods rear x2
- Stabilizer bushing rear x2
- Panhard rod bushing x2
- Tie rod end x2
- Inner tie rod x2
- I have a pair of OE ball joints
- Rubber mounting spring sear rear lower x2
- Rubber mounting spring seat rear upper x2
- Bushing suspension support arm rear x 2
- Control arm Front R/L (auto specific left)
- 10L Castrol ATF Dex II

A satisfying haul: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1l1xBsU ... sp=sharing

I plan to hopefully get the rear control arms and the springs refurbished..... I did purchase those Tedgum bushings as mentioned recently on here. I got mine via eBay from Lithuania at a total of £61.71 (making them £15.42 each inc. delivery).

Oh, holding off on the splash panels F/R until it comes out of current garage as that's another £££.

I have had a good time in the spares area recently. Just trying to get hold of anything that pops up which doesn't seem readily available. I now have a set of rear lenses to refurb if there is ever an emergency! Total cost of £50.

I now have three spare front light clusters. I got a digital clock for £10, under bonnet light £5, seatbelt arms, load cover etc etc. Many bits of just-in-case stuff all reasonably priced. I'm a total eBay stalker haha. I also got front grille badge too as mine was missing the black inserts. Yes, I could have put any bit of rubber/plastic in there but...ya know.

Brinkie did my info centre etc in May so that's great to have working again (if it still is when I see it again!)

I'd love some front snow trays if anyone is ever selling! I found some but they never arrived and I was refunded.

Hopefully it will get an MOT at some point in the next few months but I plan on getting it done in April too as a November MOT for a mostly summer car is a pain if I don't want to take it out in the wet. Poor thing still hasn't managed to get a service as it's never on the road! I have all Volvo parts for this and will supply decent oil if it doesn't go into Volvo. Stoneacre, Grimsby and Clive Brook in Bradford/Huddersfield have always been pleasant to deal with so I will see if finances will allow at the time. Good for the history books, I guess. The C30 is due service in December too and has full Volvo service history so it'd be a shame to ruin it's run!

It will, at some point, go in for that door paint. He said he'd touch up a few other tiny bits of rust too. And, again, I still plan on the stainless exhaust from Tube Engineering in Newtoft near me. One caliper has already been replaced so I'd like to do the others at some point too.

I think I've spent well in excess of £1000 on parts alone in the past few months, therefore, hopefully making it nearly worth half of what I paid for it when it's all sorted.

By the time I actually get this all done, it might stay driveable for a month or two...wouldn't want to jinx it though! Then it'll no doubt start needing body work! Oh, the things we put up with for these beautiful beasts!

Are these snow trays or have I got completely the wrong thing?

Thanks! I saw these last night. I already have rears so didn’t want to pay too much but will keep my eye on these. 🙂
