Help save my celebration...
Evening all, as we have been in a situation over the last few weeks where we have been unable to go anywhere, i decided to take advantage of the glorious weather and make a start on recommissioning my lovely Volvo 480. I have gone as far as to purchase all new parts ready to get her back up and running with a view to her being back on the road for the summer months.
Unfortunately i have hit a major problem today , whilst i was getting ready to replace the steering and suspension components on N/S/F i thought it would be a good idea to strip everything down with a view to getting on top of corrosion and maybe paint the brake calipers etc etc. Upon doing so i removed all the nuts and bolts holding the bottom arm, tie rod end and complete suspension as i have new springs and shocks to go on as well. Now rather than removing the hub, i thought it would be a good idea to remove the drive shaft in situ from the gearbox itself not thinking that i would lose more or less the entire contents of the gearbox oil all over my drive Really don't know why i did this!!! I am not a mechanic but like to think i know my way around my 480 which i have owned for 12 years, although that said i have never undertaken such a job in all the time she has been under my ownership, so this was a new experience in itself. During my fight to try and stop the oil from pouring out, i've tried to push the drive shaft back in, and in doing so i have damaged one of the main bearings on the shaft. As a result of this, the tiny roller bearings on the end of the shaft have come apart and fallen into the gearbox itself .
I appreciate this will be a gearbox out job, so my question is does anybody think it would be worth trying to get the small roller bearings out of the gearbox, i have counted 28 roller bearings altogether on each of the three bearings on the end of the shaft; two of the three bearings are still complete, however i have only managed to recover 5 of the 28 roller bearings on the third, so 23 are presumed in the gearbox or would it be better to source another gearbox. This has really set me back to the point where even if i wanted to sell it, it would only be any good as a parts car. I do have pictures of the parts in which i am referring to but i am unsure of how to upload these to this thread. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

So first things first - Send me a PM, happy to host any pictures for you.
Next, the plus point is that you know WHERE the needle rollers are. So, before thinking about stripping the box, or swapping the box, You could consider trying to fill and flush the box with something like Diesel. They've probably dropped straight down, so are potentially flush-able.

O Shane, what a tale of woe !!
While jiff is helping you sort it (and I expect other members will chip in with advice as well) can I ask you for some details of your car ? I've compiled a register of Celebs still in existance and I had yours on the list just from finding you on the forum and guessing you have 398. I tried a pm but no answer and I know it often doesn't send the emails to let peeps know so I'd given up hope of contacting you. What I'd like is the reg, and chassis no. - details held in complete confidence for my eyes only, the purpose being mainly to help pin down the un-numbered ones in the series. It's also nice to know how many have survived. Would you send me info by pm ?
Perhaps you have seen we are having a virtual meet on 23rd May, great if you want to join in the fun and games - assuming you aren't having your own fun and games hunting for awol rollers...

Re: Help save my celebration...
not a good situation
rather than fill/ flush, maybe a srong magnet SECURELY attached to a hefty section of copper wire (2.5mm^2)might gather them up?
there are a couple of places selling NdFeB type and they are massively powerful, so anything about 10 -15mm OD, 4-5mm thick with PRE-FORMED hole might be worth a try?

Re: Help save my celebration...
Evening all, Right a little bit of an update me and friend have managed to fish out 13 today plus the 5 i already had makes 18. So I've still 10 unaccounted for
Starting to feel a little more optimistic than the last 2 days or so..... Still cannot believe I've been so bloody thick....
You know the stupid thing is..... A, I have an oil catcher which would of saved the oil going all over the drive and B, I also have a Puller that would of removed the wheel bearing/Hub from the driveshaft without the need for even touching the driveshaft at the gearbox end at all....
Oh well.... It'll teach me for trying to be a smart arse i suppose

Re: Help save my celebration...
Some years ago now I changed a speedo drive cable, removed the C-clamp on the gearbox, gave it a tug, and it came out minus the helix drive on the end!
Many many evenings playing magnet on a fishing line for that one!

Re: Help save my celebration...
Further to my last update a few hours ago i can confirm that with a rather crude Magnet (Wire coat hanger and two small strong magnets taped on) i have very luckily managed to retrieve all 28 roller pins successfully from my gearbox, AND put the end of the driveshaft back together....
So new rubber boots ordered for each end of the driveshaft and all is right again
I would just like to say Thank You to Jifflemon for hosting the images and also Alan480 suggesting the use of a strong magnet, it worked a treat!

Nice one! Pleased you found them all and it wasnt a disaster in the end.
For your next trick, will you be retrieving the fuel injector clips from the engine bay or the heat selection bowden cable cable from the dashboard?!

For my next trick i'm going start the mass clean up of gearbox oil which is quite literally everywhere.... Although it does clean up rather easier than engine oil with a good detergent, So fingers crossed the driveway isn't completely ruined
