High torque clutch for late Turbo's + pics

Post by marksch » Tue Dec 18, 2007 11:43 pm

As promised details, now with pics:
(and btw, got my ecu dilivered back to me from Richard Pruen on
chrismas eve, just a small box, nothing like coyote's rims, but longed for
equally much i guess.Hope next saturday will work after checking CO and adjusting MAF resistance.)

Finished fitting last saturday and went fine.
Only pressure plate needs adjusting of bore witdh of 3 the holes to fit the 3 centerpoints(?) on flywheel: bore to 8 mm, try fit on flywheel and adjust bore again when needed, very precise and equally much!
Only when fit 100%, then fit with clutchplate, tight bolts with hand, center plate and tighten, may well go up to as much as 55 NM instead of standard 21 Nm.
Pre-tension is much higher, it is a high torque, heavy duty clutch!
Locktite maybe ? ( i did not use it )
New clutchcable i did.
How i came to this;
did some (re)search on the internet(see listing), read a lot on this forum about clutches, flywheels, gearboxes like M59/JC5,maybe interchangeble parts with Renault and so on.
E-mailed ZF SRE twice, no answer, called them and i should contact a ZF SRE distributor in Holland: Again they couldn't or wouldn't tell me if this would fit a 480.Did say it being a special order with NO return possibly.

But when Valeo specifies a Renault clutch for JC5 to be a 215 mm one, then again Sachs and ZF SRE specify the same clutch as a a 210 mm for JC5, Volvo M59 and Renault JC5 are very similar gearboxes and a 480 2.0 L has a 210 mm clutch and usus the same flywheel as late Turbo's,
i went for it.
Pro: torque and endurance.
Con: price = euro 600
I used the SRE 999771 pressureplate with the 999877 sintered torsion clutch disc.( max 70 Nm plus over organic plate 999862)

Based on this post I'm led to believe that the Helix upgraded clutch (Helix 30-4203) for the Renault Clio II would work for our little 480 Turbo wedge. Has anyone looked into this or tried it? https://www.demon-tweeks.com/us/helix-s ... lx30-4203/

I think you are right in that the clutch plate diameter is the same and I know that the centre spline should be the same too - however my concern is the fixing bolt holes along the pressure plate for mounting to the flywheel ?

Would it not be similar to the example of the Sachs Racing clutch? Depending on how far they are off, just a bit of fiddling with the holes?

i think the best experiment would be to buy a very cheap clutch and try it onto a 480 flywheel - i'm unsure!

or speak VERY nicely to your local parts supplier and they might let you try it for fit

I have spare flywheel here if you don't want to strip an engine

or it could be measured with the PCD, number and spacing of holes etc

Just have to watch what flywheel you're using! are there not 3 varients ???

I have a 1993 480 Turbo, which uses the 215mm flywheel/clutch. I'm in the US so there is no such thing as a cheap clutch to try  Appreciate any help from people who have easier access to a spare flywheel and a friendly parts supplier! Thanks.

OK
if no other offers i will measure up the flywheel that I have, note that mine is a two litre, and so before I spend a load of time trying to help you I'll wait until confirm if there are two or three types!!

but if I do measure then the data will be there for others? I'm away next week so hope not in a hurry??

PS I thought parts for cars were cheap in USA, or only for USA built cars?

Appreciate the offer. Definitely not in a hurry. Parts are reasonably cheap in the USA, but only for cars that are sold here. None of the Volvo 480 parts are available in the USA and all have to be ordered from Europe (AutoDoc. RendCar, Skandix, etc). Most places have minimum shipping costs of $50-90 per order so I end up saving up a batch of parts to order all at once.

Alan i was fairly certain that the 2.0L has a 210mm clutch, but im unsure, clutches are a little bit of a minefield!
