Poppy the Celebration - AcidicDavey's Turn!!

Post by AcidicDavey » Wed Dec 07, 2011 12:08 am

Hi everyone!

Here's my lovely little 480, Poppy!

My main love is my V70 (Which you can read about on http://www.volvoforums.org.uk Just find me!)

I bought the 480 in March 2011 off ebay while I was having a 'break' from the V70. Low mileage, fantastic condition and local! I couldn't resist!

My car is No#212 but this doesn't really mean squat! Unless it's No#1 or No#480!

Here's a catch up of the story so far:
24/03/11
Got her yesterday for something to drive around while my V70 is poorly
But I quite like it and it's probably a keeper! Really fun to drive!

95 'N' but on a cherished plate which was part of the deal.
No major dents, scrapes, rust! Yes that's right no rust on a 400-series motor!! Just got a small scab about the size of a 50p piece on the nearside sill.
Everything works even the info-centre and pop-up-lights.
73k with full service history all stamped up but with no receipts though.

Anyway here she is...

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ark003.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ark001.jpg

Pictures don't really do it oops I mean her justice!

25/03/11
She's in the garage now having a water leak fixed. Water pump knacked, driven by the aux belt but I'm having the cambelt done as well since I don't know when or if it's been done.
I will be looking after this car, I'm already starting to clear out the garage so I can lock her up for when winter arrives!!

28/03/11
I got the car back today after have the water pump replaced along with the cambelt ect.
I'm just loving this car at the moment, really zingy. It has such a lovely exhaust note, I can't explain how it sounds just really fruity!

10/04/11
Such a lovely evening so I went for a drive and took some photos. Sorry she's so dirty! Got some Interior shots in for you as well.

Haven't washed her yet, will this week me thinks!!

11/04/11
Got the car booked in at the A44 Exhaust Shop in Worcester on 20/04 for a perfomance cat-back powerflow system. I told them I don't want it stupidly loud and settled on a 2.25" bore.

Will take more pics when I have it fitted. I'll clean her on Wednesday I think.

14/04/11
Cleaned her this afternoon so here are some lovely pics!!

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... -11002.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... -11004.jpg

The wheels are perfect, missing a mudguard though!
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... eel001.jpg

The interior is superb, just the smallest bit of wear to the driver's bolster and the typical split in the top left corner of the dash like every 400series car!!

20/04/11
O Der!!

Got the exhaust done today by Powerflow of Worcester and I was very happy until about 7.30pm when I put my foot down in 3rd on a clear road. The loudest bang you'll ever hear! It sounded like the gearbox exploded but no, it's the worst exhaust blow in the world!!!!!

The car is now sooooo loud it's unreal. Think of a car with no exhaust, then times the volume by 10 and then your nearly as loud as my 480 at the moment. It's definitely illegal to drive the way it is although it's fun to drive around town the way it is.

Going to have to take her back obviously!

21/04/11
As it turns out I blew up my downpipe!! Had the garage weld it up for just £40, will buy a new one soon obviously but now it sounds as it should! Well with a new powerflow system of course.

It was sooo fun driving her to Worcester, very carefully though as I could have blown my ear drums as well!!

Might put some pics up tomorrow of the exhaust which most will hate probably! LOL

28/04/11
List of technical problems at the moment:
The one pop up can sometimes take it's time to rise,
Very squeaky brakes,
There's a tiny bit of dampness to the passenger carpet (probably heater matrix),
Squeaky rear suspension,
Windscreen washers are in operative.

Physical issues:
Small scrape to each bumper corner,
Chips to nose cone,
Crack to the corner of the dash,
A small rust scab to the N/S sill,
Faded rear lights,
I'm in the middle of removing all the molding strips on the side of the car as some are loose so I've removed them and the car looks a mess because of it!

All the problems at the moment, plan to sort them all in good time.
Wish me luck!

30/04/11
Tidied the interior slightly.

Broken Mirror Switch, bought a new one which cost £16! for a tiny little switch! Nice easy swap though, just 5 mins.
Heater control knob was very mucky and discoloured so got a brand new one for 80p.

Here's a pic of the horrible damage to the dash. Really need a new one.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... 220004.jpg

03/05/11
Took some pics today of her issues and a lovely looking tailpipe.

Here's the Custom PowerFlow exhaust that I had built the other week.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... 020003.jpg

Here's the rust on the sill.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... 020001.jpg

I think the car would look awesome if it was to have all its side moldings removed, but the paint looks quite poor under the one I took off, so I might just have it stick it back on for now.

11/05/11
My usual mid week Wednesday Mission this week was me starting on the rust

Before:
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... 020001.jpg

After about 10mins of slight distraction, I mean work! I don't have an angle grinder so some coarse sandpaper will do.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... cab002.jpg

It's much better than I though it'd be to be honest. I'll get a bodyshop to do the hard work. Anybody got any idea as to how much they might charge for recoating and paint the sill? I might get the rear bumper done which would cost around £150 I'd imagine.

24/05/11
Engine bay shot.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... Bay001.jpg

I bought some new mats to preserve the rare-ish original ones.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ats001.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ats002.jpg

Also got some 480 club europe stickers of which I'm a member.
(You even get a glimpse of me in a sexy pose) lol.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ker001.jpg

I've also bought a new dash fascia, heater matrix.
Will post pics of fitted dash on Fri/Sat.

29/05/11

Oh no! What a mess!
Ahhh, that's better!
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ash001.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ash002.jpg

18/06/11
The alternator has died on me today so she's going on a sorn as I'm going to need a car next week so I'm re-insuring the V70 for the time being.

07/07/11
I've ordered a new alternator today but I now need a new o/s headlight pod as I lent on the car then snap!! I'm such an idiot!!

The car will be for sale soon as I'm not using her now. I'll fix her alternator and headlight and then put her through an MOT so if anyone is interested then speak up now!!

Edit: Forgot to say, she'll be ready for sale in a couple of weeks so it'll free up some space for one of my all-time favorite cars. More on that soon...

31/07/11

My car has been in for it's mot and come back looking like this!
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ape001.jpg

Not very happy as you'd imagine!
The boss thinks a customer probably bumped into it. He also says when he talks to his boys about it on Monday that if one of them did it he'll pay for a respray. I've always used this garage as so did my Father before.

01/08/11

I forgot to say that the car passed it's MOT after having it's front brakes tweaked, windscreen washers fixed and headlight aligned.

Advisories on the noise level of the exhaust, rear anti-roll bar ball joints and slight corrosion to rear discs.

After driving it to and from the Garage it's reminded me how good these cars are to drive and I'm not really sure anymore if I want to sell it. To be honest I'd want at least £1200 as I've spent more than that on the car since buying it in March plus the original purchase of £1627 which was too much to be honest.

But hey if anyone is interested in the car then feel free to make me an offer.
78K, full MOT, Private Plate, full service history, cambelt and water pump done in march.
If you are interested then please message me.

Cheers,
Dave

P.S. If I decide not to sell her then she will be tucked up in my garage until spring when I'll be 20yo and therefore she'll be more affordable to insure!

21/08/11

Got some Auxiliary dials off ebay recently. Here's a couple of pics.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... als001.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... als002.jpg

Did a quick polish on some areas of the car when I was bored the other day, also removed the front number plate holder as they're just so ugly! I'm not sure what I'll do for a front plate when the car's back on the road. Maybe a small Vinyl one as it's only a 6 digit plate.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... -11002.jpg

As you see I've started to deal with the bumper corner. And yes 480 experts, I know it's black tape but I just don't want to buy some so since I've got some paint It'll do for now. I'll have the bumpers resprayed one day and have the black lines deleted.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... Job002.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ner001.jpg

Bought a Digital clock as I always liked the idea of having a stopwatch in a car (not as if I would ever time myself to race somewhere because that would be naughty of course!)
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ock002.jpg

Also got hold of this beaut!
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... der001.jpg

Can't fit it yet as, as, well I can't be bothered alright! Get off my back people! Anyway I think I have problems...MOVING ON...

Finished clearing out the garage and squeezed her in (Isn't that the wrong way round?).
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ged001.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ged003.jpg

As you can imagine there probably won't be any updates for a while but I'm looking forward to getting her back on the road already!! April here we come!!

30/11/11
I decided to do something about this the other day as it's just so disrespectful :(
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ion001.jpg

Who needs one of those fancy load liners anyway?
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ace001.jpg

Here are some pics to show the difference in height between the 2 types of armrest just to annoy the people how want the cup holder one!
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... est001.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... der002.jpg

I tried to start it but the battery was so flat it didn't even click!

04/12/11
I'm going to remove the rear lights tomorrow and start preparing them for re-lacquering. Doing this for 2 reasons:
1. They're slightly faded.
2. They let in a bit of water (Not at the moment though of course since she's sheltered!)

Depending on how I feel I might end up sorting her out and putting her on ebay as I can't see me being able to insure her in the near future. But I've got this other thought which is that if I was to sell her I'd end up spending the money on junk that I wouldn't be able to get the money back from! At least the £1000 or so that I think the car is worth is safe if it's in my garage as it can only gain value! If I had £1000 it would be spent on tuning the V70 plus I like the 480 anyway so just having it is a good thing as I'm always thinking that maybe I'll be driving it again, and if you've never driven a 480 before you won't understand but it's such a fun car to drive!! A little under powered but that chassis co-developed with Lotus really makes up for it!!

Wow, maybe I shouldn't part with her! lol! If I did I'd only want to buy another probably so I might as well keep the tidy one I've got my grubby hands grasped on.

I do want to modify her though as I'm really into retro classics really and like the idea of lowering her and fitting some different wheels.
I like the idea of some black 5 spoke wheels with a polished rim. Good Idea? I think so!

When it come's to lowering it I don't know whether I'd go down the route of just fitting some springs or finding a whole kit with uprated dampers and lowering springs. I think the whole car is on it's original suspension so I think I'll do the whole job, should transform the car!

05/12/11
Started to remove the rear lights for refurbishment as they are faded.
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... hts001.jpg
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... hts002.jpg

Started on the Driver's side as it already had a mark on it I thought it wouldn't matter if it broke.
Success!
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ght001.jpg

Although the inevitable happened as it already had a crack in it!
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww22 ... ght001.jpg

I think I might treat her to some brand new units instead! Oops!

you do realise your lights were already better than the vast majority!!!!

i thought mine had been sealed in by a previous owner but im reliably informed that volvo seal them in from factory?!

as a result ill be doing mine ON the car. just not till next year as its far too cold for spraying! i gave mine a wash today to make it flame red not salty white!

I really like the look of your exhaust. not so keen on it pointing up but each to their own. i really DONT like the 45 degree standard tailpipe thats on mine just now. the car is FARR too quiet on the standard exhaust, it only makes throaty notes when you boot it past 3500 rpm.The exhaust isnt that old but i may change the back box to a custom... do you mind me asking how much yours cost (you got a whole system?!)

keep rolling

Hey Nick,

My lights weren't too bad I know but they had to come out as I said they were leaking (Leak a lot more now I know lol!).

To be honest the exhaust is a bit too loud, very barky and free flowing. But they said if you ever decide it's too loud then you can come back and we'll weld in some different silencers which I will be doing when I'm driving her again.

They can make it look how you like and I personally think it looks good with it running parallel with the bumper, it it came out horizontally then I think it would look silly!

My cat-back cost £330 including vat. Just a single exit back box cost £150 + vat I think.

Cheers,
Dave

Smallish update!

The car's coming out of my garage as I checked up on her today and the passenger's carpet is soaked through!

It's the heater matrix and it's about time I swapped it out!

But anyway I got hold of 2 bargains recently. A Downpipe and a Cover. Less than £60 for the 2!

Haven't forgotten about her,

I had her out in the fresh air the other week.
Started first time after a charge, running better than when I put her in
It's the first time I've started her since I put her away in July/August, whenever it was!

Proof!
Image

Also took a pic to show how close I am to losing my spoiler!
Image

It's snapped all along the front and only being held by the sections as it curves round the bumper at the sides.

I really REALLY wish I had the money to get this car back on the road but it's number 3 on my life list at the moment and everything relies on number 1 soo...

your car is better than mind though :( have you got your lights sorted yet. ive been doing mine the past few days and will update voc once its finished

Hey Nick,

Saw your post on VOC, you've done quite a good job with those rear lights of yours.
I think I might hold out for some brand new ones since I want this car to be perfect as it's not a whole long way off! But I could try and do mine similar to yours, what have I got to lose?

You only had 2 bolts holding your spoiler on? No wonder you ran over it!
I'll be removing mine to repair it soon!

I got hold of this rarity the other day.
Image

I've dedicated a jar to '480 Project' to start putting some money together as I really need to do something with her now! There's a tiny bit of mold on the leather I noticed but I rubbed it off with my finger, it's a bit damp due to the leaky matrix which I'm obviously going to need to sort asap!

Today, when my Aunt dropped off my Nan she asked which car I was getting back on the road and suggested that I should get the V70 back on the road as she thought it looked such a lovely car after I've worked my magic on it. That was nice to hear as she was trying to convince me to sell the car when I was 15 and inherited it from my Father and said it was an old man's car, it was for sale and a sale was agreed; thankfully the sale fell through which of course I'm glad about now, I was silly to put it up for sale really but that was early 2009 so.... Anyway, isn't this the 480's thread lol

I put the battery from the V70 in it today and it started up immediately! No hesitation or anything. The warning lights on at the moment are the SRS light (loose cable in the wheel?), the open door light (Dodgy switch?) and the low fuel lol

It needs a bloody good clean inside due to the bit of moisture 'released' from the heater matrix which is of course the first thing I need to settle, we also need to:
-Fit new discs and pads all round, I'll also paint the calipers so colour ideas please! I'm thinking black or silver.
-Fit new rear anti roll bar links.
-Fit new downpipe as the old one has been welded up several times it seems.
-Fix o/s headlight as it's currently failing to 'pop up'.
-Remove interior and clean it all thoroughly.
-Clean and detail exterior after sourcing good rear light clusters.
-Figure out why the rear suspension was chattering when on the road, I'm told it's more than likely due to the damper bolts coming slightly loose.
-Give her a good service with genuine parts.
-Possibly she'll need some new rear tyres due to cracking in the side wall which is a shame as they have loads of tread and are a good brand.

Ok, that looks like a long old list but in reality it's only a few hours work that I should manage on my own, just have to find the motivation lol

Here are some pics taken this afternoon, I polished up the car before I put her away last year so she looks good(ish) still!

The interior looks worse in the photos than it actually is. As you can see the driver's seat is clean and this is just from me sitting on it, it's all just on the surface.

Here's how she rests now, I needed to get it out of that garage as it's on the point of falling down!

I'll keep everyone posted on my progress so check back soon!

Most boring post ever coming up so you might as well sign out now

Image

There's some rubbish.

1. The Retro Cars stickers are going on each rear side window.
2. I've got use for one of the six Swedish flags, don't know what to do with the rest :S
3. There's a tin of Silver caliper paint and some Flame Red touch up paint to well, touch up!
4. I managed to grab a set of genuine locking wheel bolts, tidy!
5. And then finally, the plates and frames. I can imagine the frames aren't to everybody's taste but drilled pressed plates (which they are believe it or not) are a no no imo! I will be going for an offset front plate to cover up a mark on the paint, plus it looks cool lol

I've bought loads of cleaning gear too since the paint finish is currently excellent and obviously I want to maintain that! I think the car must have been professionally machine polished prior to me owning it. I've got loads of new products to try out including Bilt Hamber's Cleanser Polish which I've wanted to try since reading it's review in Practical Classics which it won anonymously!

BTW, the car has picked up a little name, Poppy as she's red and has pop up lights of course!!

I am really struggling to find the motivation to sort the motor out though, I haven't done anything to yet except wipe down the interior and buy junk, but the weather is hardly on my side :(

Anyway, the lights arrived this morning and look stunning! Thanks dcw, you've really helped me out here I was starting to regret removing my old ones but yours' are far superior to what I had so I'm a happy Dave! Here are a couple of pics:

I've had the new light seals hanging about since I ordered them off Joep (A chap in the Netherlands who reproduces some discontinued bits) and have made great use of the inserts of the seals - abstract art - I call it: 480 Rear Light Seal Inserts Stuck on a Bedroom Wall.

Mini Swedish flags on b-pillars and on rear valence, I might remove the tbh but I'm not removing the one placed on the glovebox lid (the reason I bought for).

those lights look a whole world better!

but remember, 480s had nothing to do with the swedish factory as they were built in the daf factory that volvo bought over in holland!!

Good old Nedcar!

Figured out the problem with the drivers' headlight today, it's the bloody motor and getting the old one out is a pain in the arse! It's loose but there's no room to remove it! Very frustrating!

I forgot to say, I got some moose stickers from Kerry on VOC last week. They look great but I'm not going to fit them to this car as tbh they don't really suit it.
Image

My new wheels arrived today, they look fantabulous! They've got a 3 inch dish and a much lower offset to the standard rims to effectively bring them out a bit. Plus, if I decide not to fit them they'll be very easy to sell to the Golf boys being 4x100 pcd!

Here's the 'money' shot!

And yes, that is all you're getting!

Got together more bits:
Image

I tried painting the badges but for some reason they look milky? I used different primer to usual and I can only guess that's the reason as I prepped them well and sprayed on a fair few coats!
Image

I was also touching up the new RH Topline wheels and thought, 'What the hell, have some pics!'
Image
Image
Image

As you can see they're missing their centre caps which are meant to be full caps to cover the whole centre of the wheel but finding some will be impossible so I'll just get some blanks for the centres and get some stickers for them.

The badges came out ok after another flick over.

Some pics of a wheel outside in the sun.

I made a decision on where to put the front plate!
Image

And the rear, I mounted it on the plate holder, doesn't look right so I'll mount straight on the bumper!

I was painting the rear calipers today so I offered up one of the new wheels, thankfully it's all good, no clearance issues or any poke even though the outer rim protrudes about 31mm extra and there's still a good distance from the arch but obviously it looks much better now! Just got to try them on the front now.

They look fab, just right for the car. Nice and angular, I would have loved some black BBS RS replicas but some chrome rims and winter just don't go together lol, plus my budget, she to small :(

Rear calipers now in silver anyway.

Also I have taken those flags off the B pillars.

Today was raining so I thought to clean up the wheels that are currently off the car.
I have bought some Wheel Sealant so first cleaned them thoroughly then polished with some left over SRP and applied 2 coats of the sealant, that should keep them nice and clean. I've never ever used wax or sealant before and now they're just so smooth! As I've said previously, this car is going to be kept looking mint!

Obviously, I'll dress the tyres once the car's being used which I hope to be soon as my aim is to get the car booked in at the mot station this week!

Also, I have removed the mudflaps since the one on the front is missing, plus, the other one on the front isn't a Volvo one! Honestly never noticed that before lol. Another thing I never noticed while the car was on the road is that these cars have a light in the boot, didn't spot it before since it's below the roller blind and since that's usually covering the load area I never spotted the non-functioning light, it's only missing the bulb so I'll sort that obviously!

The car's not ready yet, should be tomorrow though. The 'big clean' should happen tomorrow too, a good mate's coming over to give us a hand.

It took quite literally an hour to remove all the foam tape residue from the badges, I used some carb cleaner which did the trick with an old card, which is now ruined lol.
You'll also see tape on the bumper, finally touching up them marks!

Test fitting on the front:

As you can see, the caliper is barely visible through the new rims, the story's worse at the back end!
