rear wheel bearing

Just wanting to clear something up;

Can the rear wheel bearings be changed without having to change the whole hub?

The car's a '95 Celebration.

I'm sure someone will have an idea....

I had a celeb that I thought had a rear wheel bearing on its way out, bit of a grinding noise if someone was sat in the back and especially going round bends, I was advised this was quite a rare occurrence and the rear bearings last quite well (also that I'd be sure if it was a bearing as it would howl quite a bit), sure enough it turned out to be a cable fouling on the tyre when riding low.

Maybe worth checking if there is anything easier to look at first, sorry I can't answer your question would have been asking it myself if I had to change it.
Had a Turbo, then got a celebration, then had to go back to Turbo!!!

The rear hub bearing is replaceable just a matter of hitting the old one out and replacing with new it's just a standard sealed bearing about half the prices for the bearing than the complete hub but a lot more effort

Well, the story goes like this:

Had a definite humming noise coming from rear left, gradually worsening with speed and worse when cornering to the right.

"Wheel bearing's on it's way out," was my first thought, "I'll stop driving it like I stole it and see how it goes."

So, about 2000 miles go by (still driving it like a getaway driver!) and it gets slightly worse, but not much.

Then, whilst driving like a normal person for a change and doing about 15mph around a left hander... CRUNCH!!

The right hand rear bearing has definitely properly gone, and I think the left hand is still on it's way out :(

So... I'll check for rubbing cables etc on the "hummer", but it looks like I'm gonna need 2 new bearings, hence the question in the OP, there's a hell of a difference in price between a whole hub and just a bearing!! :shock:

Did you find a bearing supplier?
If yes do you know what the part number was/is not the volvo number, the SKF / FAG/ NTN etc

Parts For Volvos do an aftermarket rear wheel bearing kit part number PFV906224 @ £20.86 if that helps.

I bought a pair of bearings off e-blag and then found that the're pressed into the hub...

I'm yet to get around to getting my mate to press one out to see if they'll fit, doubtful I think, as they came with circlips making me think they're for an earlier model! :(

If they were supplied for a 400 series they should be ok as the part number listed from Part for volvos says they fit both the 400 and 300 series. It lists the same part for all 480s and they will most probably fit many other vehicles.

This might also explain the inclusion of a circlip, if the 480 does not have one perhaps the 300 series did.

Just check the overall dimensions first to see that they match.

I've not striped the hub off a 480 so do not know if this is possible but will confess previously I have drifted old bearings out with a suitably sized socket. If they are scrap it wont matter where you strike the old ones just be carful not to damage the hub. When replacing make sure that the socket is pushing the outside shell and the bearing is pushed in square.

According to the Haynes book of lies, earlier models were held in by a circlip.

I couldn't find my calipers to measure them properly.

I tried to knock them out with a hammer and socket but they were more than happy where they were... Being a builder, I'm no stranger to wielding a lump hammer in anger, but it wouldn't move at all!!

Rather bizarrely though, since taking this unbelievable amount of punishment, they seem to be scared that it'll happen again and have now stopped grumbling, even at seriously license loosing speeds!!

480s hey?...
