Do Renault gearboxes fit easily?

Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Do Renault gearboxes fit easily?

Post by macaroni » Wed Jan 23, 2008 8:46 pm

I see from Heavend's post that the 440 box fits, but the speedo drive is a pain. Is this the same with the Renault JB3/JB5 'boxes which are rumoured to fit?

I have a slight whine from the diff and now everything else is sorted on the car, I feel I should do.
Having said that, it isn't getting any worse and can't be heard if the fan is on level 2, so isn't too bad.

Any advice gratefully received.

Antony

its going to get worse, i had the same whine and its pretty bad now. i'm going to take her into the garage after pay-day to get it seen to, but if mr renault can offer me an alternative i'd be very interested, i have seen quite a lot of theory but no one who has actually done it...

I hope it's a big pay day, I was quoted about £700 to remove it, rebuild it and replace it with a new clutch.

Just how much do I like this car...?

i know that the gearbox from the 480 fits straight on to a Reno 5 GT Turbo so can't see why things would go the other way.

Why don't you go and get a gearbox from a breakers? There are plenty around.

I have the opportunity to grab a gearbox from a clio group N rallycar.
The price is slightly above 1000£ (1500€) which is about half the price you should normally pay for such an item.

The gearbox is in fact a renault JC5 gearbox with SADEV internals.
The gear ratio is about the same as on a 480, 4th & 5th gear being slightly longer.
Does anybody have experience with a similar JC5 swap ? Theses boxes can also be found on S/V40 laguna and mégane.
I guess the speed transmitter would have to be adjusted, but what about driveshafts, differential or other components ?

When i was looking for gear boxes on mine i got told that any clio box will fit but the clio 172 gear box would have been best for me due to the electric speedo..

I also got told that a laguna 2.0 box will fit, ill try and find the topic... I think it was on rttoc.org thou ?

Ill take a look bud.. Get urself registered on rttoc since you have a r5 all ur questions would be answered...

I know you say tha t the rtoc club aint strickly for you but they will be able to answer all your questions in a matter of mins as they all have r5's with volvo lumps, one bloke has a turbo charged clio 172 lump in his r5 running dta, looks fecking awsome
