Problems starting when Hot/Warm

Post by clio 480 turbo » Thu Apr 12, 2007 5:02 pm

Can someone shed any light on this. My car will start fine from cold but when I try to start it when it is hot/warm it turns over for about 30 seconds before it decides to fire up

Thanks

Michael

Think this needs to be in engine section ;)
From what I've heard, if the temperature sensor is dodgy then the ECU can see the engine as being cold all the time, so leaves the choke on. This would obviously flood the engine when starting a warm engine, and would most likely use more fuel. Check the resistance of the sensor, or if you can, just change it anyway - will make it run better!
Volvo 340 GL 1.7 :) - Nice (RWD missed) - sold
Volvo 460 SI Turbo ('Rich Mod' / 2.5" Longlife SS exhaust / 710N CBV / Cold Air Intake) - (Turbo missed) - sold
Volvo S90 3.0 CD 24v (RWD back again! LOVING the straight six :) ) - is 16mpg that bad...? - sold
BMW E34 540i 6-speed Manual V8 :) - sold

car still has this problem, been told a few different things which it could be first lets rule out the temp sensor i have changed it. been told might be a worn camshaft or a tight tappet also been told its fuel evaporation from the engine. starts fine from cold but once the engine been ran for a few minutes then turned off it will take ages to restart (30secs), when it decides to start theres a smell of petrol as if its flooded the engine.

There are two sensors one for the temp gauge in the car, and one for the ECU.

The ECU sensor has two sensors inside, one for each ECU. The sensor is near No1 spark plug, on the front of the engine and has a 2 pin plug going to it. It's tricky to get at as it is under the throttle body, near the oil seperator/crankcase breather.

The sensor can be teasted, it should measure about 1 to 1.2k ohms when cold between the pins and engine block. Both pins should give about the same reading to the block (+- a little bit). If you use PTFE tape to seal the sensor, it won't earth to the block, use a copper washer instead.

I had a similar problem, after a long run it wouldnt start until she 'cooled off'. Had the problem until i got a new starter motor. And ive had no trouble since!
