Big brake upgrade kit, interest?

Post by Murf » Thu Aug 16, 2007 4:24 pm

Following on from the big brake thread, ive been in touch with a man from WMS who manufactures brake kits.
I'm in the process of buying one of his kits for my MR2 and asked about the possibility of a 480 kit.
Below is the MR2 kit, the 480 kit would have the same 4 pot callipers and a similar sized disc )277mm x 25mm), depending on what you can fit under stock wheels.
Ive driven an MR2 with this kit and standard rear brakes and they are awesome! Never tested them for fade of course but they are very good stoppers.

We are looking to get someone as close to Hastings / Bexhill, East Sussex who wouldnt mind donating/lending a standard strut/balljoint/stock 15" wheel rim/original discs/calipers to be looked at to see if this is viable and to use to measure for the brackets/disc etc.

Prices will be similar to the MR2 kit, maybe slightly more if not many are interested.
£331.90+vat for the kit
£42.46+vat for Earls braided lines
£48+vat to upgrade to grooved discs
EBC pads to fit are £25.07+vat for greens, £30.90+vat for reds

I know this is big money in 480 terms but in performance brake terms its very very cheap (hence me buying a set for my MR2!)

Is anyone interested or able to help?

Oh, and if these are too wimpy (not the now defunct burger chain!) then fear not, much larger are available!

One thing i notice when going from my MR2 to my 480 is just how crap the brakes are, i have late model turbo vented brakes and even the brakes on my van are better, and thats French!! ;)

Not if they've been powdercoated in evil by Vader ;)

Thats the items, do you have any brakes knocking about as well and do you live anywhere near the dude that makes them?

Should be easy enough to find an old disc and caliper and it would be ok to post.
Is nobody interested in this brake upgrade then? No feedback from anybody??

It is tempting but as you said, in 480 terms it is a lot. They do look cool as fuck though (quite aside from the fact that they will work brilliantly).

Not sure I would want them unless I was running serious power on the 480 (200+bhp)....

Interested, yes.

I may be able to dig up the parts required to be sent off, but I'm not too close.

The 480 brakes being crap... I have driven 480s with utterly horrible brakes, but mine seem to work fine. Maybe cheap aftermarket parts? I have no idea.

Maybe its just that ive got used to having better brakes?
Ive cooked mine a couple of times driving it hard so i guess they cant be that bad!
I'll hang fire till the set ive bought for the MR2 turn up and then see what happens, maybe i need to remember its a street car!
Stupidly powerful brakes are a great laugh though, i gave the missus a neckache with the brakes on my old GT4 and that was just through normal driving!
Ive got a set of those in my boot that have been modded to fit the MR2 but ive chickened out of fitting them, i dont think theres enough weight in the front end to stop it flipping over

they do look the sex, and i bet they work well too. i suppose the money is comparable to lowering/gas shocks so its not utterly ridiculous? but too much for me personally (ATM!)

you can have the disk/calipers from my spares car if you need them, but i think they're the solid (non vented) style.

Great feedback, cheers guys! :D
The way i'm looking at it is that most of the cash involved will be in the calipers themselves. If i get poor(er!) or need the cash and no other 400 series owners want them, it should be fairly easy to sell them to anyone as they can be adapted to fit almost anything!

So far we have:

1)Me (better put my money where my mouth is!)
2)Richard
3)Mark
4)Ryan

Anyone else interested, just add your name!

I'm going to suggest to Keri from a WMS that he just goes to a scrappy with a fiver and a hacksaw and rips the parts he needs from any 400 series. If not then Owen and Martin, your offers of parts will be gratefully recieved!

Excellent job Murf! :D Now all I gotta do is convince the parents (well, mum) that it's a good idea! Otherwise it'll be overdraft for me! :D

Good angle!!
I'll tell that to Bec when she questions why ive spent £400 on a set of brakes! Or i could do what i'm convinced she does with clothes/shoes etc and just half the real cost and make it an early xmas present to myself :D
