Crazy Insurance Quotes - What has changed & Any ideas?
Hello 480 friends,
I've just returned to the 480 fold after a few years absence, with the purchase of a 1995 2.0ES (70k, rust free)
I'm contemplating running her as a second car, but am astounded at the daft quotes I've been getting for even reduced mileage - for example, £1789 for 3000 miles per year comprehensive - I'm 49 and have a clean licence and no accidents and live in a small North West town working as a college lecturer (i.e. I'm no scrotey tear-ar*e!).
I've tried shopping around, but for the life of me I cannot find anything approaching reasonable as a starting point for a negotiation. The last time I ran 2 cars, I was getting both insured for under £500 (in total, not each!) only 3 years ago.
Any thoughts or advice?
Martin

Agreed! So, where might I go to find something a little more reasonable and realistic?
Any pointers appreciated

Unfortunately as we all need insurance by law it is probably one of the most corrupt industries in existence.
Have you tried the price comparision websites? That's where I get all of my quotes from, going to an individual insurer for my V70 was over £1000 but through compare the market the same insurer was £550.

I think insurance has gone up because more and more people are making personal injury claims. It seems to be the culture these days.. whenever there's an accident 25 passengers appear and they all have whiplash (hmmm)
The insurance companies still have to make money, so they just raise the premiums

In view you note that you are looking to run it as a second car, try the classic car insurance companies, they are cheaper but the downside is you might not build up a no claims bonus and there could be other restrictions.
Out of interest I have tried a quick quote (google search classic car insurance) on a 480 but obviously my post code, milage of 6000 and it returned a guide price of just over£200.
They might be worth a try if you have not done so already.

Try the V.O.C scheme through Chris Knott.
My situation was :-
- Full NCB on my normal (not 480) vehicle.
- I bit the bullet with my existing insurer for 12 months on a new policy and zero NCB at £650 (more than value of car)
- Swapped to Chris Knott on a classic policy, insured value £500, 3,000m p.a at £200
- Suits me !
