Not at all Volvo related, but my wife picked up her new car at the weekend - a 2001 Skoda Octavia estate.

I have to say I am very impressed with it. It is huge inside, comfortable, well equipped and significantly cheaper than the equivalent Golf on which it is based.

I like it so much I have driven it to work today instead of the 480

My wife has the 480 so she can go and get a spare key cut for me.

She has also been despatched to Halfrauds to stock up on half of the Autoglym range.

My friend has a top spec Audi and bought a VRS Estate for his wife. He was most put out that it was riddled with like for like Audi parts! Skoda's are nothing like there predecessors these days. In effect, your buying a VW or Audi for a lot less cash but all the same quality.
Skodas arent that bad either, i once overtook a Porsche 911 in one of these!

My dad just got a 2004 Skoda Octavia TDi, It's really nice car! Based on Audi A4 I think, There are Audi stickers/inprints all over it.

When the engine is running there is no vibration inside the car, We fitted a tow bar and bolt holes are already there. It's a top car

Roo is right. Skoda/Audi/VW/Seat are all VWgroup and as such share chassis'. engines and alot of switchgear. It is quite surprising as the Girlfriend is shopping for a newish car and we have looked at Golfs, A3's, Polo's, Fabias and they are all so similar. Driving the golf and driving the A3 it is hard to tell them apart. The Polo and the Fabia are also inseperable, only the Fabia is roomier.

Crazy how they just badge up the same car differently, jiggle a few bit's about, slightly cheaper plastics on the cheaper models and then sell accordign to badge! What makes me laugh is the mugs who are willing to pay more for the badge! The missus seems to have decided on the 147 though....Lets just hope these new Alfas are as reliable as they claim. Bloody good fun to drive though! It has actually given me an Alfa twitch...I'm not sure if I can afford the repair bills while I'm at uni though....

Anyway let's just hope VW start using Bugatti engines in VW's and Lamborghini engines in Polo's.... Oh and I just remembered the new Lambourghini engine is out of one of the mad crazy Audi's. Just fiddled with!
Oh and Renault are making their new petrol engines in conjunction with BMW!

I guess it's the same as Volvo using renault engines in the 400 series and VW diesels in the 850/70 series.

Anyway that was a rather wierd post that went off on a what engines are in want tangent that I had no control over...so apologies

I'm bored and ill so need to amuse myself lol!

My mate who lives in Lincoln has a VRS and it goes like snot off a stick! You could argue that they are just a cheap VW or Audi but still a mint car, and they look quite nice too, my little 1.4 polo i had was a beaut did nearly 20k in it and it only wanted a new clutch at 110k and a thermostat!

haha, it's like a Skoda forcourt at my place at Christmas, dad has an Octavia, Mum a Fabia Estate and sister a Fabia!

Driven them all, and the Fabia's are ok, but there is SO much room in the Octavia ... you could sleep in the boot and the drivers footwell is massive. Great for long legs on long drives!

Octavia get my vote ... can't really get anymore sensible though!

I was driving a lot Octavia TDi last summer and I have to admit that when I found comfortable position behind the wheel it was a good car. Quite fast, reliable, with good steering and suspension and as it turned out to be saftey. I crashed it at the end as some lady drove in me at the speed of 40-50 without brakeing.

What an interesting analogy....
I would have thought that snot on a stick would have quite a large amount of stickiness to it, and therefore probably wouldn't come off very quickly at all?

I hear great stuff about todays Skoda's in quality/price ratio. But there's one major setback with a Skoda: charisma...

If you don't care about that then there's very little reason to dislike today's Skoda's imho...!

... sadly for Skoda I think car appearance matters and will not consider one

If I pay a lot of money monthly for a car I want to be able to grab a chair, a soda, a bowl of crisps and just sit next to it and stare at it for hours. Would get bored too soon
