If you won the lottery...480? Yay or Nay?

Some things just can't be placed elsewhere. Have you been speeding and got fined? Or spotted a nice new Volvo on the web somewhere? All non-480 messages can be posted in this part of the board.

Would you have a 480?

Yep-i could finally afford to run/fix it!

If you won the lottery...480? Yay or Nay?

Post by Dan the 480 Man » Sun Feb 17, 2008 10:41 pm

Well, another weekend passes with three whole pounds wasted on the lottery, and a further £10 on Bingo tonight   (seriously, it gets addictive when you win a few quid, honest...), so it's another week at work.

On my long deliveries, i like to have a little dream. If i won the lottery, say £3 Million, what would i have in the garage? Would i have a 480? I know, that despite the fact she was a pain in the arse, i get a little dispondant whenever i see her. I'm not sure if i'd try and buy her back or not...

There would be a 480 in my drive without a doubt-would you have one, or more, and how would you like it?

I'd have just the one, a Turbo (no point in keeping a standard one, it'd never get used), and i'd spend way too much on it-but i'd keep it forever. On my list there would be...

-Strip it out, and have it fully rewired by Volvo (hey, i'm a millionaire, i can finally go to a dealer )
-Have all the electrical components replaced (windows, wiring looms, mirrors etc)
-Send it to a performance company (like BB Tuning), and have the engine completely rebuilt (new parts, subframe etc), but with uprated components for better reliability-Samco hoses, stronger clutch etc, but only to original HP.
-Rich Mod it :D
-Have all the rot cut out and everything replaced
-Have uprated suspension/brakes etc-but not hardcore, just enough to keep it comfortable but low...
-Have a complete re-spray (obviously)
-Subtle install (nowt ott, again, just good uprated stuff for sound quality)
-retrimmed seats with fresh heating elements. I'm thinking black leather bolsters on all seats, with cream leather/alcantara down the centre, with 'Turbo' stitched in-but i'm unsure as whether to have the original Turbo font or the later 440 style font...
-full new set of Taurus alloys, and a full set of the Vega's too...
-Volvo accessories-Momo wheel, snowcap, replica floor mats, clear indicators, digi clock, remote locking etc.
-a full stainless exhaust, with two 2.5" pipes coming out straight at each end of the bumper-but very short so you can't see them much, and not very loud either.

And i think thats it. I wouldn't want it looking modified, just subtle-how i always wanted one! I know it's a pointless post, but it's nice to dream :bored:

Would you?

Definitely yes!!!

I has to be red/white turbo '94/'95. Jaquard interior. Taurus wheels, lower and stiffer suspension. Kayaba AGX or some Koni stuff. Engine and gearbox rebulid. No rust, all interior has to be brand new. No crackles
All interior lights, cupholder, front spoiler, rear speakers and every single interior additional equipment available.

Well I'm still keeping my digi clock for this moment :)

I'd have my '90 turbo done to the stock state with overall (angine, body, under, REAR LIGHTS - 4 pairs on reserve ;) and other critical parts on reserve..), buy another '90 or earlier turbo and make as original as volvo cabrio! with overall again. both powered by richmod, of course! and a decent heated garage for them.

Anyhow, a full warehouse of 400m2 with some degree of mechanical workshop, for my later (and present) oldtimer preservation fallouts.. it would be my second choice, i guess. but first i'd make my flat done.

i'd keep the 480 ... as a symbol of what life was like before i won the lottery!

nah, i'd just do what everyone else said ... strip it right down, and basically rebuild it again, but with the highest quality parts ... the only excepting ... perhaps an Aston Martin engine & exhaust! ;)

If i won the lottery i wouldnt buy a 480...

I would buy one in EVERY spec (inc a GT-turbo), and maybe get a custom cabrio done (i do think the cabby shape suits the 480)

AND i would get Lula back on the road

AND, to keep all of thse in tip top condition i would have a huge heated industrial unit in a secure area!!

Ahhh, the dreams...

ditch the b18ft, stick a impreza STI w/ 4x4 or small block chevy v8 turbo w/ RWD.

keep it leather inside and standard looking trim but roll bar + add wider wheels and lower it. whoo hoo.

I think i'd have to have a RWD conversion, some really nice 80's jap drifting style alloys and seriously anal refurbishment.

EDIT:- Pretty much what Martin is thinking.

Props fella ;)

Hmm...maybe a stripped out one with a roll cage and RWD for drifting then. Maybe. :D Drifting 300's look cool when they're sideways, 480's would look awsome!

I didn't think the other poll options would get used

I would spend the money on a full rebuild (from bare body) featuring:

Restored body in silver metallic (volvo 426), black turbo front spoiler and splitter, black 440/460 side skirts, custom rearspoiler extension.

The interior would have a Volvo palmbeach (momo), All black/silver grey leather interior with lower (below windows) interior parts also painted black (instead of grey), Volt, Oil pressure gauge and modified pedals for heel/toe.

Futher modifications are the brakes with Sumitomo 4 pots calipers, Ferodo DS2500 pads and 280x22mm discs.

For the suspensions I would design custom stiffer springs with 25mm lowering added with yellow KONI dampers. Futher more some PU ARB bushes would be added.
The body would be reinforced with strutbraces at the front and rear .
The wheels would be AZEV type A 16x7.5J with 205/45ZR Toyo Proxes T1R tyres.

And then we are only half the project since an engine swap would be done. A Volvo B4204 (2.0 16v) engine with 4 throttle bodies, sport cams,
4-2-1 exhaust manifold, custom exhaust system and an aftermarket ECU
This would be coupled to a JC5 gearbox with LSD.

Finally a nice headunit/sat nav with amp and 4 speakers(3 way)

In my lottery winning dream Ive managed to buy every 480 in the world and I have them stored loveingly in my huge heated barn on my estate in the Highlands. And once a year I let you lot form an orderly queue to view them all through a small window, but only if you behave. And those who dont behave will feel the might of the cattle prod - hehehehehehe Excellent (aka Mr Burns)

think it would have to be

.re-sprayed ( vase green with a gold pearl )
.stripped and re-wired
.stereo stripped and a better version installed with a custom made boot
.even lower on coilovers
.beefed up a.r.b's with polybushes
.2.0 16valve williams clio engine with a nice supercharger running a fully programmable engine managment system
.semi synch short shift quaiffe box
.brembo vented and grooved 4 pot brakes
.twin letter box style exhaust
.toyo 888 road slicks
.new rear lights (shiny new )
.sleepy eyes
.momo fighter steering wheel and gear nob

The wheels i would keep as my nice gold ones and maybe a slight tint on the windows wouldnt go amiss .. This would then become my play car to upset the pecking order at the traffic light grandprix :kill:

I would get Volvo to build me a new one out of the parts they still have in stock...although I've no idea what they'd have left by now.

If I really won the lottery I would have three 480's:

- My Turbo Collection
- A 480 Cabrio
- A funky customized 480 (not spoiled) but with different colour, refurbished seats with red leather alcantara, all those kinds of things. And with a 2.0 Turbo 16V somethinglike engine .

I would have a turbo conversion done on the Celeb. Also buy some land and have a large garage with state of the art tools, diagnostics equipment etc. All of course would be free for all club members to use. I would also salvage 'spares or repairs' 480s from ebay and put them back on the road newly refurbished.
