The Wastegate is ruined!

Some things just can't be placed elsewhere. Have you been speeding and got fined? Or spotted a nice new Volvo on the web somewhere? All non-480 messages can be posted in this part of the board.

The Wastegate is ruined!

Post by Brasco » Mon Mar 12, 2007 1:16 pm

I hate going onto the wastegate now cos there's always 10 spam posts to 1 normal one. It's made the wastegate crappy and I'm losing the patience to bother anymore. Is there no way to stop all this spamming? I haven't seen it on the other forums I use, so I assume there is a way.

There are several ways but no point in me explaining again. I used to login in the morning before I went to work but now I am starting work at 5.30am I don’t get up in time to get on here. I don't know why they favour the Wastegate over the other forums, maybe because it has 'Off Topic' in the title

And to top it off I have just had another f**king thread removed. For f**k's sake, this is the fourth time in two weeks. What the F**K is going on?

It was called "Lots of Spam (and something you can do about it.)"

And somebody just removed it... :wall:

Maybe I am posting new topics at the wrong time of day when the spammers are busy at work but it doesn't take a genius to recognise posts by known members amongst all the stupid names offering Viagra and the like. Maybe it was just too subtle for somebody. :?

As I have suggested many times before, displaying the post count of the OP next to their name on the Wastegate index page will prevent this happening and make it obvious who has just joined simply to post spam.

So, I kind of agreee with ya Brasco, it is ruined. But I can skip over the crud and wait for our faithful Mods and Admins to get rid of it as and when they can. However I am getting seriously pi$$ed off that every other new thread I post in the Wastegate gets canned by some myopic numpty with a red mist before his eyes.

If proper posts are getting regularly removed by anti spam measures then the spammers have won and we might as well all give up and go home to our Austin Allegros

@Rich I can't explain that, I have been very careful not to remove threads by forum members in my control panel I see the thread title and number of posts that thread has, I can't see the user who posted it but I check before going into my moderator control panel. What time(ish) did you post it and what time did you notice it had gone?

As most spammers seem to be from the US they are posting in the early hours of the morning.

It went up at 12.06pm this afternoon and had a few views but no replies. It was sitting in the middle of a load of spam posts and was definitely still there around 3pm.

So the chances are, whoever removed spam from the Wastegate between 3 and 4.30pm today also took that one down.

Any red faces?

Nothing anyone has said so far has made a difference, and being a mod doesn't change anything to be quite honest, can't do anything about the spam other than delete it.

Well why dont you just ask other forums how they are managing to keep spam away from their sites?

It doesnt take much does it?

Gods sake!

Yeah it did. Check this tune out too.

I never claimed it was a serious post, that's why I put it in the Wastegate.

@ Rich Not guilty my friend, I may have deleted one of your other posts in error a few week ago, but to be honest I dont get on much anymore.
I appologise if that was the case.

But like Adam i think it would be very unlikely we would get rid of a genuine members post without first contacting them.

Like the Admin, Adam, in fact all of us, have busy lifes and find it takes more time to keep on top of the spam. It's annoying and pointless. But to give in is to let them win. If Adam ( who knows more about the workings of the board than i ever will) has a way to prevent this then ADMIN please give him the access to be able to deal with it.

When I became a Moderator like Adam it was to help restore order if you guys got a little too hyper, put posts in the correct place, and remove a few spam posts.

Now the last part, remove spam is almost a daily job.

Right moan over ,have more spam to remove.

@VBB sorry if you have been fighting a lone battle of late, I'll try to give some more time to assist.

Rich's post was definately on there when I posted this thread... dunno if that helps.

I really shouldn't complain about the spam, it has its uses. My Russian sex slave arrives next week and I just can't way to test out the herbal Viagra I managed to get from here on her! :hopping:

@Wayne. Thanks for the words they are appreciated. Its good to see you are still with us.

I have a simple non-modification way to deal with the issue of genuine threads being removed, it will take no more than 2 minutes to set up, just need an Admin around to do it. I have PMd Daniel as he is on here atleast once a week

@ Laserowl - Hi Wayne. Nice to see you round these parts.

@ JT, yeah those damn Apple computers failing after 10 years when there is still so much you could do with them... ;)

@ VBB - Look forward to your idea...

I don't imagine for a moment that anybody intentionally takes down a post by a genuine member but several of mine must have been caught up when spam was getting cleared by a Mod. I understand how hard it is to keep on top of spam but it is bloomin' frustrating when geniune posts get swept away too.

I also notice that spam with responses from members always gets removed these days - like the one where Stu posted a response saying "All this spam is driving me away but this post is really funny, please leave it up" etc etc. Surely anything posted by members should normally be left up (or moved to Sticky Pants where we can laugh at it).

I know it will be hard to work out what is crud and what is class. Maybe just post "Marked for Removal" and if nobody complains, do so. Too much moderation is as bad as too little.
