The ideal forum I would use these days is YABB www.yabbforum.com It is far more admin/mod friendly than this PHP, fro example, on YABB you have 2 types of moderators, Global Moderators and Mini Mods. Global Moderators can access the admin control panel (admin controls what they can do) but the can also access users profiles without having access to the admin control panel. This way they can edit/delete users, reset passwords, change usernames etc.
Mini Mods are individual forum moderators, for example, someone could be assigned to check/edit/correct step by step guides before they are put into an archive forum
All of this is standard on YABB meaning no modification is required, however installing modifications on YABB is much easier than on PHP

They posted earlier while I was online so a few seconds after they had posted it was deleted, they were advertising viagra. Still forgot to add it to the list.stu chacks wrote:AnreeLivingston
Not even posted yet, but just registered so must be a spammer. Should we be calling this "Volvo/Spammers club Europe" ?

Hi all
not sure if its been said already but a site i visit has a good system where by the bloke(you/me)registers and is moderated during your first 15 posts and the usual email confirmations etc
having the first 15 moderated would surly put them off spamming as they would be nabbed after the first attempt:)
just an idea as these are getting more and more spam around here these days:)

That is doable and there is a modification to do that or to moderate the posts of every member for that matter, its more commonly used on forums for people who misbehave, like the last step before being banned. The point with spammers is 99% of the time they have a dodgy ID/website/email address/occupation making them easy to spot. I still think the way forward would be the admin/moderator approves the account but I will install that mod on my forum and check it out see how complicated it isbilly5000 wrote:Hi all

Here's a simple and easy way to spot dodgy posters, if it is technically feasable with this message board host.
On the forum lists top levels (i.e. General, Wastegate etc) can we display the member's total posts next to their name? e.g. supersexygirl (1)
Anybody posting in the Wastegate for their first post with any vaguely suspect thread name will be instantly obvious to users so nobody even bothers to click on the thread to read it let alone following a link to some dodgy website.
Of course this won't actually prevent spammers posting and, granted, sdome spammers are obvious anyway but it would instantly flag brand new members and allow us to take a cautious approch to reading such posts.
Comments? Gaz? Anyone?
