They tend to feed cows straw (in addition to hay/haylage) because they can cope with it - silage is often rotted straw, keeping the more precious hay for the important animals like horseswedge69 wrote:Straw is for bedding.

straw is rest material of grain. some grains straw is eatable for herbivores some straw doesn't absorb moist well, so un fit for bedding. Btw. most of the cardbord we use is made of plain straw. Hoses, unlike cows need more rough structure, like rough hay, and some straw in their diet to keep them healthy. So the "bad" hay goes to the horses, my friend ! Feed a horse a few days cows food like balanced diet of fourage (a.o. chopped mais), the horse dies.dragon wrote:They tend to feed cows straw (in addition to hay/haylage) because they can cope with it - silage is often rotted straw, keeping the more precious hay for the important animals like horseswedge69 wrote:Straw is for bedding.

btw, silage is not rotten straw, its sealed single day dried gras, that rots so long until the air is gone under the plastic (or in the silo) and then gets preserved. same procedure as "sauerkraut" ("rotten" white cabbage) like "sauerkraut" it gets a bit acid. Kills horses too.
(sorry, did not want to discuss this, it seems my "joke" got out of hand )

Not really true, in the UK at least - straw is NOT a foodstuff, as it is a high inducer of colic, which is quite often fatal in horses, but the idea that "bad" hay goes to horses is ludicrous on the face of it - but then you're not actually telling us what "bad" hay is in this context.volvofox wrote:Hoses, unlike cows need more rough structure, like rough hay, and some straw in their diet to keep them healthy. Well, not completely - there's 2 types - "big bale", which as you describe is grass baled and kept airtight but the important point that you didn't mention is that it's cut grass that's rolled and baled WHILST WET - it may be wilted for 24 hours, but it is not turned and dried, which is why it's moisture content is so high. The second type is silo produced - there's different moisture content in them both. Oh, it doesn't kill horses, it's true the perception is that you generally don't feed it to horses because the moisture content is too high, which MAY lead to micro organisms which MAY lead to botchilism in horses. Also the pH too low, and is generally too low in fibre for horsesvolvofox wrote: btw, silage is not rotten straw, its sealed single day dried gras, that rots so long until the air is gone under the plastic (or in the silo) and then gets preserved. same procedure as "sauerkraut" ("rotten" white cabbage) like "sauerkraut" it gets a bit acid. Haylage is made in a similar way, but is dried before packing airtight, this means it has a lower moisture level than silage, and if I remember correctly they want at MOST 50% moisture and preferably around 35%.
Of course in the UK they throw any old junk in the cows feed
This thread's gone a bit silly really...

In my experience horses like polo mints the best... Maybe not the best dietary supplement...
The big tasty... the unhealthy option at McDonalds - hahaha
- it does look good though. Maybe we should get Kirsty's car to do the taste test.

My fjord mare eats tortilla crisps, bananas, dryed apricots, my AA ned eats mars bars, and likes beer mixed in his breakfast before competitions (I no, i'm not allowed to, but no horse is tested for drugs here), and my other fjord eats anything, he's more like a goat than a horse !
My horses have always eaten straw, and I've never ever had any problems...
