1989 ES 1.7 BREAKING FOR PARTS
I've started a new thread to hopefully entice anyone in need for parts... My project has fallen to an inevitable end, this 480 is just too far gone to justify the work so I am trying to shed as much of her good bits before she becomes a cube. Please see the link for some basic images of the rust bucket. I'm not going to be stripping this in one go, but will take parts off as/when they are requested.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing
Not looking to make a fortune, I'd just like to try and make other 480s with more hope shine that little bit brighter! Plus, if I could make close to what I paid for her it would mean it wasn't a total bust!
I can provide pictures of any parts you might need, just hit me up with a message or reply to this thread. I cannot comment on the condition of many mechanical parts as I never got her running, and the electrics have also been a mare. I will however try to test any electrical components you may need with my probe/battery.
Cheers
Alf

How is the Drivers side rear lense looking? I need an uncracked replacement (not necessarily pristine, just one that can be restored)
I am sorry to hear there is no other reasonable option than throw in the towel, but there are a couple good looking ones at the sanctuary waiting for an adopter

Did you mean the rear brake light lense/unit (excuse my limited car linguo) - if so yes unfortunately they are both cracked. I will send some pictures so you can judge the extent of the wear...

Hi Alfie
yes that is what I meant, that's ok it's not urgent so I will keep an eye out. It's just if they aren't cracked they can be sanded and relaquered. My offside one is good, but the drivers side is cracked

They are likely too far gone for your restoration but here they are anyway (NS pictured too for anyone else who may be interested)

I also have a brand new windscreen, unused, gathering dust in my room, with the rearview mirror bracket fitted. I was clearly jumping the gun getting this!

What sort of price are you looking for . I would be interested in the screen, mine has a stone chip and wiper marks that will not come off.
Re: 1989 ES 1.7 BREAKING FOR PARTS
For context, I paid £150 for it from a auto glass distributor. So I guess close to that would be ideal, keeping in three figures. I also don't think I trust any courier with shipping (it wasn't boxed or wrapped when I picked it up, just styrofoam corners) so would be best collected around Manchester.

Hi!
Do you have the radio electric antenna?
Thanks

Re: 1989 ES 1.7 BREAKING FOR PARTS
The antenna may already be spoken for. I will have to get the thing off and fully inspect as I don't know the full condition of it yet! As with most of the car, things seem to look OK on the surface until you look underneath...

Re: 1989 ES 1.7 BREAKING FOR PARTS
Can anyone offer any suggestions with the following parts which I cannot seem to remove:
- NSF pop up light is stuck closed. The manual cog does not turn either way. Need to get it out!
- Aerial not budging. The nut on the exterior seems to move the whole aerial and worried if i twist too much it'll break!
- can't seem to find the holes for the radio tool. Does the plastic surround just pull off? Worried about breaking it!
Thanks,
Alf

Re: 1989 ES 1.7 BREAKING FOR PARTS
Sounds siezed if you can't get the cog moving so likely nobody would want it as a spare.
Have you got the nose cone off? This might help access to remove the pod with a seized motor but I'm just guessing.
Electric aeriel body in car should be held with a bracket. If bracket is missing, hold body with your hand. If tube is rotating from body you could attempt to brace this with some plyers but again it all sounds seized up and nobody would want this. Can you apply power to see if the aerial actually works before wasting more of your time. Test INSTALLED to prevent aerial mast coming out and not wanting to go back in!
Which radio do you have? Some early ones don't require a tool and instead have little tabs which you push in to release and then pull out

No cone off yet as the DSL screws have to be removed, and I can only get at these with the pop up light at least half way up! I might have to get creative with this one...
Good shout about testing the aerial. I'd be shocked if it actually works.
Think I must have an early radio. There is a tab on one side but I can only guess the metal behind it has rusted! Will have another bash.
Thanks, Alf

Re: 1989 ES 1.7 BREAKING FOR PARTS
If it is a CR-4025, you might find that it is in demand, the later stuff not so much
I don't think any plastic prises off on any of the radios so don't get too rough. Lots have the tabs.
Can you see this page? http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/volvo480/radios.php
If it is the CR-4025, you need to push the tabs with a flat blade screwdriver or equivalent IN to the radio for them to release. You wont get this done with your hands very easily. Then pull the tabs out after release.

Re: 1989 ES 1.7 BREAKING FOR PARTS
Alfie, looking at the radio on your photo I can't see any way of releasing it. So maybe it's not locked in in that way.
If you prise out the auxiliary gauges, can you then reach in and literally push the radio from behind?

Oops, I missed that photo! I vaguelly remember having that one in a 480. You know what, you might be right and the little outer side trims may well need to be removed and then you are left with two holes top and bottom!

Its lovely, but only really sounds acceptable when paired with an amplifier, which isn't too hard if you can find one with the right plugs. It wouldn't be the end of the world to wire any old amp up to a custom plug.
