WANTED: Rear Springs

Cleaned up the garage and found some parts you want to sell? Or are you looking for that one part? You can advertise or request just about anything that has to do with the Volvo 480 in here: brochures, towing-hooks, antenna's, etc etc...

WANTED: Rear Springs

Post by jamescarruthers » Mon Jul 27, 2020 9:13 am

Does anyone have original rear springs for sale?

There were two different types which Volvo fitted to the rear of the 480. Ideally I'd like a set which are not colour marked and a set that are yellow colour marked so that I can play about and get the ride height correct. ‎

Can anyone who understands spring rates and lengths can tell which of these is lower?: ‎
Black (unmarked):19.7NM spring stiffness; 322mm length‎
Yellow: 17.2NM spring stiffness 310‎ mm length

I am not trying to lower the car but I believe Volvo changed the springs if you added a factory tow bar to stop the back end sagging. I have the opposite problem as I have the lightweight reproduction rear bumper bar and the car sits silly high at the rear when ‎combined with Monroe's incorrect springs for our car!

I have read conflicting info on here that Yellow is standard for the ES and also that yellow is installed when you add a tow bar!

What about turbo springs? I thought they were -10 on the standard cars?

I think some people believe lots of crazy stuff about the suspension set ups!

AFAIK the different springs that Volvo fitted as standard were an attempt to make the ride height standard across the range but with different weights this was never perfect. E.g Automatics are heavier and get stiffer and shorter springs up front.

Thankfully the back is much simpler: Black or yellow markings.

On the front, springs were either black (unmarked), blue, green or yellow.

Fronts (colours the parts catalogue; rates from this forum):‎
Black 17Nm Spring Stiffness; 372mm length‎
Blue 20Nm 360‎ length‎
Green 17nM 362 length‎‎
Yellow 20Nm 350 length‎‎

Fronts also menturned elsewhere on the forum that are probably 440/460 or lowering springs. ‎
Grey 12Nm 457 length‎‎
Red 22Nm 355‎ length‎

One other thought....

Add some weight to the bumper bar?

Sometimes the simplest solution..... (plus I didn’t fancy searching for “where can I get depleted uranium from” in my browser...)

it's OK if it's depleted, not much use other than throwing at folks at Mach1 :-)

look up Close In Weapons Systems / Goal-keeper etc .. . .

scary or what

but back to original PO, i don't have any paint left on my springs!

Depleted uranium makes a great rivet block too

Hi James

These are my rear springs and as far as I am aware, they are original for a 1994 Turbo...

Image

They have a blob of yellow paint half way down.

They are as good as 310mm tall which is exactly as your specification.

Image

May help to disprove the theory of any significant sagging over time as, if original, are 130,000 miles old with an aftermarket tow bar!

Ultimately I need to keep these as they live in the 'originality box'.... together with the exhaust eventually.

However, you are more than welcome to borrow for any ride height trials. I think you're Cambridge which is only 20mins now thanks to the glorious new A14!
