As per title really.
Having taken the starter off I have found that both the gear on the starter and the flywheel teeth are worn, explains the intermittent loud noise when trying to start the engine.
I did think of just replacing the starter as the new gear would reach further into the flywheel teeth but as the engine is out now would be the best time to replace it if I can find one.

No I haven’t found one as yet.
My current thinking if I can’t find one before everything goes back together is take the old one to my local garage and have the ring gear rotated as the damage appears to only be on some teeth, the new starter would then use the undamaged teeth.
Apparently (good old youtube) this is normal as the engine will always stop in one of 4 positions and would explain why the noise I got when starting was intermittent.

I had same issue on the SS1, only solution was to buy a new ring gear. getting the old ring off meant 'destroying' it.eye of ra wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 5:00 amNo I haven’t found one as yet.

I put the flywheel in the freezer and ring gear in oven (SWAMBO was out)

Haha, brilliant, I've had a few moments like this recently! One was scrubbing the washer bottle out. Had to admit defeat on this one and get Rachel's help as her hands fit in the filler neck very nicely.
