wanted two litre manual post 93 front sub-frame

Cleaned up the garage and found some parts you want to sell? Or are you looking for that one part? You can advertise or request just about anything that has to do with the Volvo 480 in here: brochures, towing-hooks, antenna's, etc etc...

wanted two litre manual post 93 front sub-frame

Post by Alan 480 » Wed May 30, 2018 11:42 am

As per title!!!

I'm also open to offers of a pre 93 with the older style 'horseshoe' rear mount as I'm willing to modify old style mounting location to accept newer style (assuming they are at same starting height :- ) )

I know where there is one from an auto, so the back section is the wrong height and has wrongly positioned fixing holes. If you want to have a go at adapting it, or cut the wrong box section off and weld on the correct one from your old subframe, I'll pm you the contact details.
This is an auto one:

and this is the manual one:

Interestingly the 480 auto one is the same as a 440 or 460 manual - I know, I've been down this route recently - all the way from Norfolk to Derbyshire to collect the wrong one !!!

I believe your first picture is also of a manual but with the older horseshoe mount. The auto mount has a bend in the front as shown.

I don’t know if the later autos had the later mount and a straight front as both my autos have the old horseshoe and bend.

The ones in my photos are both from late 2 litres. Does anyone know if these are covered in the parts books ? I couldn't find them anywhere, and no part nos on the subfames themselves.

Well there is something not right.

According to the parts book and Vadis there was only one part number for the Auto up till 1992 which has the horseshoe mount as on my cars (the manual is more complicated).

From 1993 the new mount was used on the Auto and therefore the new frame. This did change part numbers a few times but all had the new mount.

Again according to Vadis the 2.0L didn’t come out till 1993 so only ever had the later mount meaning the frame from your first picture can’t have come from a 2.0L (or an Auto) that had its original frame. Is it possible it wasn’t the original frame?

The one in the first photo is actually from a late 460 2l manual - the chap we got it from was convinced it would be the same as the 480 manual one but sadly not. Luckily, he did then start breaking a late 480 manual with a decent subframe so he swopped it for us. Whereabouts are the subframes in the parts book ?

That does make more sense. The straight bar at the front says Manual.

Looking at Vadis I would say the guy was right a 460 frame should fit if it had the same gearbox and was from the same year however the frame in your picture has a horseshoe mount making it 1992 at the latest so it can’t be from a 2L. I have made an assumption (and we all know where that can lead) that the 460 and 480 changed at the same time as Vadis doesn’t give a change over date for the 460 (or 480) but does use the same diagram and info for both and the 480 parts manual does give dates.

The frame is in section 61 page 467 of the parts manual.

From my own detective work it looks like the rear section with a dip in it is for later 'bobbin' engine mounts

if straight across rear then it is early style with 'horseshoe'

the dip at the front is (I think) to clear the larger AUTO gearbox, I guess they could have used the same sub-frame for ALL initially ?

Ideally I don't want anybody to have to make a car 'not movable' so will consider any sub-frame that is available, as it is fairly easy to convert from the 'cranked' auto to a straight for manual, plenty of spare tube section in 'spare steel' stock pile in garage, ditto swapping /massaging the rear is also 'not difficult' :-)

I think I'm sorted (in a fashion, thanks to folks on here)

presently more concerned with getting father in laws car insurance sorted and applying red paint to scruffy wings . . . .

i'll pass on the wings thanks, paint is easier than fitting and those look like ferrari ones , not Volvo

I can confirm that the two litre manual DOES have the dipped rear section :-(

I had to cut the old mounting area from old subframe and weld it into the new one (new one was 'old style' but no rust)

so managed to wriggle the subframe out from under the engine /gear-box, leaving the front suspension hanging from the strut towers.

really only issues were getting it off the rear mount bolts , the front ones are easy cos they are captive but can pop up, the rears are welded :(
then trying to get the hoop section over the boss where the lambda sensor would screw in and freeing it from the yellow centralising piece. I only saw one one the passenger side when I went to put it back together . . . ..

should there be two, one on each side?

and just to further cause distress the gearbox mount is on it's last legs .

so does anybody have the distance between the mounting lugs (school boy error in not measuring when off the car) and the overall height?

I have a spare front mount which I reckon could be made to fit

this is for the fancy newer style not the horse-shoe type.
