WANTED: 480ES/NA Sports Gauges Oil Pressure Sender

Post by SamH » Sat Apr 21, 2018 7:57 pm

Have fitted sports gauges to my 480ES but need an oil pressure sender that’s specific for the sports gauges. If anyone has one available please let me know. 😀

Cheers, Sam

That bit covers the sender, you'll also need a bracket as shown here:

Image
(the bit not in the red circle)

This bolts on to the side of the engine where you currently have a switch, and gives the sender enough clearance next to the oil filter. Very hard to find, but there may be something off-the-shelf that works as long as it has the right threads on either end. Next step is to figure out the electrics - you need to find the yellow wire on the loom in the engine bay, which will connect to the sender for the pressure reading. It probably won't have a connector on it if the car didn't have a gauge from the factory, so you'll need to fabricate a solution for that (very straightforward).

You may possibly be able to bodge a sender on without the bracket, though I'm not sure from memory whether the threads for the switch and the sender are the same. In the meantime, your gauge should be working but reading max pressure whenever the car is on due to the open circuit. If that bothers you, you might be able to stick a resistor in to get the needle somewhere in the middle.

Hi all,

I had a look at a friends oil pressure sender setup yesterday. It's the first time I've seen the sender in position.

Just to confirm, the mounting bracket for the oil pressure sender is just that, a mounting bracket. It has no function in the operation of the sender?

I'm guessing it just positions the sender near the part of the loom to which it needs to be connected.

If thats the case, I'll whip off my mates bracket, measure it up and make a copy.

TIA.

there will be a port through it, the bit that screws into block will be a 'banjo' fitting, I guess a LONG pipe fitting would allow it to clear the oil filter?

Thanks Alan. Makes sense.

I'm sure I can get an angled banjo fitting arrangement to work.

Pretty much. It's a while since mine has been off the car, but as I recall the sender doesn't have enough clearance next to the oil filter without it (which is shown quite nicely in your pictures).

The loom should reach regardless. It should be the yellow wire that's normally tied off on the left hand side of the engine bay as you look at it that you need for the pressure signal. If the car didn't have a sender from the factory then you'll have to bodge the connections yourself, but that's pretty easy to do, and it looks like your friend has done just that judging from what looks like red heatshrink on the sender connections.

If you do find an off-the-shelf alternative for the bracket (or end up fabricating one) then do let us know. Many people have bought the gauges without realising that they need the sender, and have then bought the sender without realising that they need the unobtainable bracket, and many more will do so in the future!

Think I have it now.

Done a bit of learning on how the oil pressure sender works. For those that don’t already know.
The sender has a small bore in the thread which mates to the engine block (or via the bracket for a 480).
The engine oil pushes against a diaphragm in the sender, moving a wiper inside the sender which runs up or down a blade of known resistance. The blade is in turn connected to the gauge. The output resistance of the sender depends on the oil pressure.

So I’m assuming the bracket has 2 functions: -
1. Provide a mounting point for the sender to clear the oil filter.
2. Provide an oil feed to the sender, so it in turn must have a small bore inside it. This fits with Alan’s earlier comment.

Therefore, all I need to do is manufacture a bracket with an angled mounting hole for the sender (10mm x 1 to suit the FAE 14080) to clear the oil filter. This is linked via a bore to a suitable clearance bore to allow a socket head banjo bolt to fit the bracket to the block and allow an oil feed.

Image

A lot of effort to get a needle on a gauge to move about 10mm, but what else have I got to do!!

Don’t suppose anyone knows the thread size for the block/banjo bolt??

You might be able to get something off the shelf.

Something like these adaptors clear the block then maybe a straight extension to lift it up would do the job.

glue it in the middle ?

you only worry when you see it going down as oil thins due to heat. . . .

there might be another tapping on the block that could be used? I think HBOL shows the oil galleries, often blanked with a M8 grub?

I could be wrong but I think the early cars have this mounted on the back of the engine. It was probably moved to make way for something, hence the oil transmitting stand-off adapter on the front for later cars.

I am away so can't check. You might be lucky and find you have space at the back depending upon your configuration.

Just taken some photos of my setup to compare against the above pictures of my mate Rod's Celebration.

This is Rod's oil pressure sender (with yellow and orange wires connected): -

And this is what I have: -

Not being an expert, could someone help identify.

I have something fitted to the block. It has an orange wire connected and a yellow wire unconnected just floating around but coming from the same part of the loom.

Thanks.

The thing you have is a switch, responsible for turning the oil light on and off on the dash. Essentially, when the engine is running the oil pressure holds the switch open and switches the light off, when the oil pressure drops (or the oil vacates the car for some reason), the switch closes and the light comes on. This is why the oil light comes on with the ignition but then switches off once the engine starts.

The orange wire attached to it runs the oil warning light on the dash, the loose yellow wire is for the pressure signal. A pressure sender (as distinct from a switch) has two terminals, one for each wire. The pressure sender is basically a variable resistor, whereas the switch is exactly what it sounds like.

I have done some investigation, and from what I've found I think all the cars had the brackets. Here's a car manufactured in 1988:

Image

Oil sender highlighted in red.

Close-up:

Bracket indicated (just) in red, sender in green. Note the rubber cover over the sender.

Here's the engine in my '94 GT (yes it needs a clean):

Image

Again, sender highlighted red.

Close-up:

Image

Again, bracket is red, sender is green.

The only major difference I can see is the orientation of the block and thus the pipes onto which the oil filter connects, so my guess is that all the cars have the bracket. The only variant I haven't photographed here is the 1.7 with the Volvo-branded manifold, but if you're willing to take my word for it then I can tell you that it's the same as well!

Thanks for this. Most helpful.

Does the oil pressure sender replace the switch or do they coexist?

It replaces - the switch comes out and the bracket bolts to the engine in it's place, then the sender into the bracket.
