Wanted: Rear Engine Mount

Cleaned up the garage and found some parts you want to sell? Or are you looking for that one part? You can advertise or request just about anything that has to do with the Volvo 480 in here: brochures, towing-hooks, antenna's, etc etc...

Wanted: Rear Engine Mount

Post by WRDendy » Thu Mar 15, 2018 12:05 pm

My car is at the garage having the clutch done and I'm told that the rear engine mount has fallen apart in the process - anyone know if there are any suppliers that still have them, or failing that anyone have one lying around that they'd be willing to part with? I've given Lakes a ring but they're not 100% sure they've got one, and if they did are not confident about getting one out of a car without destroying it.

Not ideal as the car is now stuck at the garage with the engine half-in/half-out!

It's a '94 2.0L manual so by my reckoning I want part 70 in the diagram below:

You can still find them new, though they've become shockingly expensive.

The part you're looking for is Volvo 3466003, they are also known as Febi Bilstein 22645. If you Google these part numbers you will find a supplier that stocks them. Expect prices over 150 quid.

Thanks everyone, looks like I have options which is a relief.

From cross-referencing the part number I dug up (3466003 as Brinkie says) I've dug up a few alternatives - I can't find the Bilstein but Corteco have a similar part which I might be able to get hold of.

Is this the one you mean? If so then none available unfortunately, which is a shame as the alternatives are not cheap. Unfortunately engine mounts are not optional extras so I don't have much choice!

Do you still have the 'broken one?

If it was me I'd fit a 'normal' Ford Capri and add an extra hole into the base of the original mounting plate :-)

like these

fro a tenner maybe worth a punt?

or any similar items, you only need to get the height correct?

In a way - they put the car back together with the broken engine mount and I drove it home rather gently (apparently it was already broken when they took it apart, so the logic is it can't get more broken, right? :bla:). Fortunately, I've managed to find another one so it'll be going back in next week to be put back together properly.

Good luck with yours tomorrow!

I'm not sure how I feel about MOTs to be honest - mine went through in January with no advisories and then the people at the Clinic tore it apart last week and gave me a list of problems as long as my arm when it when in for the service, which I'm glad they did. I suppose all the MOT really does is ensure that the car won't spontaneously combust while driving.

The clutch cable is the next thing to sort out. Mine should probably be replaced in the near future as Terry says, but it seems that RHD cables are very hard to find, although there are plenty of LHD variants. Interestingly the software shows me more than one variant:

It may be a case of finding someone who can reproduce them if they really don't exist...

Thanks for the tip - as it happens I'm in Dorking fairly regularly so I'll drop in next time I'm there. I suppose the challenge will be finding some drawings, or a donor cable to work from. I'd use mine, but unfortunately the car won't move very far without it!

They may have already done one for someone with a late 480, but if not I have a clutch cable in my spares stash. Rather confusing labels on the bag though
Image
Image
The Volvo label is from a cable kit and this is a secondhand cable only so can't guarantee it's the right part no. The label is for chassis numbers up to 580999.
The other part no is for chassis nos 565117 - 573099
As we have 480s from both ranges it was a safe buy for us even if we don't yet know which of our cars it would fit. I don't know how much of an issue the thread difference is.
Alternatively maybe Al could get the one off our donor car (M reg GT so should be the same as yours) but that could take a while and might turn out to be a pig of a job.

I have a spare cable in car so can measure it if you want, but TBH I just 'assumed' it was the correct one, liberated it from a wreak and unknown engine size (likely a 1700) but at least then if I do , somebody can tell me I've been carrying a 1700 around for last ten years :-) I broke one on previous car at traffic lights and managed to sprint to the motor factors (only a mile away) and fit at road side, less than ideal but possible :-)

According to the parts list, it's only the lhd cars that have different cables for the different engine sizes. Seems strange but for rhd they only seem to differ according to chassis no.

Sylvia

Maybe the change in parts number is when they changed to the longer clutch lever (ie the wee bit of plate bolted to the end of the lever on the later cars?)

Both my cables are 6mm threaded, and I'll need to have a look at the pedal end :-)

the fittings around the clutch lever (at box) can be swapped across either way as the 6mm nut will come all the way off anyway :D
but all the part numbers are the same at gear box end. :?

maybe the change is when they did away with the switch for the wipers to go to high speed (the one on bulk-head?)

There's some good information here - sounds like finding the right cable isn't as straightforward as one might imagine!

I think the best course of action for me would be to find my chassis number and then compare that to the parts list, which should tell me which variant of the cable I need. Not sure whether I'll trust that 100% though - the best thing to do would probably be to wait until I don't mind not driving the car for a few weeks and then remove the cable to take measurements and compare, and see if Venhill (or equivalent) can duplicate it as I'm not keen on depriving others of hard-to-find spares where it can be avoided. Might be worth seeing how my one matches up to the others that people have posted here at the same time for future reference.
