WANTED: Original tweeter

Post by jamescarruthers » Wed Aug 16, 2017 6:53 pm

Does anyone have a tweeter spare that I could buy from them?

To test if it's serviceable, measure directly at the connections on the back of the tweeter, missing out the capacitor, and you should get a few Ohms resistance. Because of the capacitor, it will read open circuit if you measure from the connections at the end of the long wires.

P.S. Yes, I know they're rubbish and I do have a set of components with crossover to put in in the future, but some trimming is required. This is just a quick fix to get my sound quality back up to scratch after I preparation for a few long drives coming up.

Now have said tweeter sitting on desk in front of me; have checked with meter as described and getting open circuit on wires but small resistance across terminals...so all seems good!

I have no problem letting you have my only spare, but given it is my only spare and given you're only planning to use it as a temporary measure how about I send it to you, and you send it back to me as and when you get round to replacing it again (obviously no rush at all!)?

Alpine tweeters fit perfectly. they even have a nut hole in the back to fix it to the door pannel like the originals.

Much better sound than the originals

Sorry David for my late reply. I very much appreciate your offer and I may take you up on it. Knowing how slowly I get round to jobs sometimes, I'm hoping someone else may come up with one for sale. Also, I forgot I have tweeters in the rear cubby hole speakers so I best test them too first!‎

I may just go to Lake's and have a mooch around when I am next off‎ if no one else has any.

And thank you Balto for that recommendation on tweeters. I have some ready for the front but I may get your suggested ones for the rear cubby hole speakers in time and swap them over.

Hi James

Sorry if I sounded grudging - it reads it a bit to me and I certainly didnt mean to be! All I really meant was that as and when you get round to your planned changes don't bin the one I can give you but send it back. If you never get around to it, no problem.

Yours if you'd like it...

I'm still after a non-blown tweeter if anyone has one spare. I checked the last ones in cars in Lakes but they were both open circuit!

I really should just bite the bullet and replace these with modern equivalents. ‎

I might have one in my "various parts" bin. Will look for it this afternoon, if it turns out to be a good one, it will be yours for postage only.
(I was clearing out my parts storage yesterday - I feel like a hoarder!)

Thank you Robert.

I won't be home for 3 weeks so let's leave it until then.

I should probably take my rear speakers apart (cubby hole ones) and check the tweeters in those too.‎‎

Do they have tweeters? I thought it was just one speaker with odd dimensions (so there is no quality replacement)

Does anybody know how to replace the speakers in the rear compartment, I mean those in the side panels, not in the cubby holes. I tried 13 cm Pioneer speakers but they protrude too much so the covers won't fit.

Skip does not have tweeters at the rear. Door panels not cubbyholes.

There are tweeters just aft of the funny shaped speaker on the cubby hole speakers assembly. They are exactly the same as the front door ones, in fact they have loads of cable in them so they could be moved forward to their original application if needed.‎

Frenchfries, This was an option on early 480's. Your car would have had the later setup as standard. Better speaker but no tweeter‎

There are no tweeters in the speakers mounted just above the cubby hole. In the UK at least, this seems to have been included with most 480's as time went on. I'm guessing 92 onwards.‎

Just for the records if I remember correctly, the capacitor on early models will give up before the tweeter itself as they used electrolytic capacitor that are not suited for the job, later they got replaced with proper non polar capacitors, so if you have a non functioning tweeter you might want to check if the capacitor is still good.

Good to know about the capacitor!

But if the coil reads open circuit, it's dead and can't be revived?

Say I wanted to play with the tweeter by replacing the capacitor, what do I need to ask for, capacitance/voltage?

It seems to be a 2.2uF/80V fitted but I cannot find a replacement so far, can I replace it with something approaching?

If the coil is burnt there is not much to do, but you should be sure you are bypassing the capacitor as it is in series.
You can bridge the capacitor to briefly test the tweeter.

I can see that 2.2uF 50V or 100V are more common. just make sure they are NP (non polar) 50v should be already enough.
And sorry for the late reply, I'm not getting emails from the forum somehow.
