WANTED: Tailgate/rear windscreen wiring loom

Cleaned up the garage and found some parts you want to sell? Or are you looking for that one part? You can advertise or request just about anything that has to do with the Volvo 480 in here: brochures, towing-hooks, antenna's, etc etc...

WANTED: Tailgate/rear windscreen wiring loom

Post by aidanmorris » Tue Nov 22, 2016 11:02 pm

Hello all, does anyone have a spare tailgate/rear screen wiring loom and if so is it an easy job to fit?

Whilst trying to balance the rear screen open (really must replace those struts one day) I noticed some very frayed wires in the section between the exit from the body and the point it goes into the screen surround.

The end as it goes into the screen looks a bit like a connector but I wasn't sure and didn't want to give it a yank just in case not - is it? And how far back into the headliming would I have to go?

If it's complex I may try and patch up - despite it looking pretty bad the rear wiper is still working. Not sure about the heating element - haven't had cause to use it this year.

Also, I'm still looking for a nearside wing mirror casing/surround. Prefeably in white but any colour better than leaving it exposed to the winter elements.

I'm sure I've robbed a 440/460 at some point. The casing is the same, I'm sure. The insides often aren't (i.e. Could be manual operation and/or not electrically heated)

Mine had failed at same location so ended up soldering / repairing the damaged wires. then wrapping self amalgamating tape around whole are where joins onto the screen at top edge note that ALL the wires are black and only have a small number on them!

The wiring looms, like so many things, are long since obsolete from Volvo, which was the easiest way of doing things.

In the past I have cut out the frayed parts and added in new lengths of wire - for most you can go from their connection at the rear window element/brake light/wiper motor right back through and connect them inside the roof lining. It's a fiddle getting the plastic trim off round the back window - and even more getting it back on again - but it is do'able. The main problem is getting the wires wrapped where they go over the rubber seal to make it watertight again (or as watertight as it ever is there...).

In terms of the headlining if you remove the plastic trim across the top at the rear and the two side covers on the C-pillars, it allows the roof lining to drop enough to reach up behind if but at the same time leaves it sufficiently supported - again just a question of being helpful.

The mirror covers are indeed identical from face-lifted 440/460/480 - as said, it's just the mirror insides that vary, but I think the majority were electrically heated and adjustable. The part that differs is the mounting plate - much bigger on the 440/460.

Many thanks all for the advice. Sounds like I need to get my soldering iron out!

Good luck - it's not difficult, just fiddly and requires time and patience. It's worth it when you see the rear wiper happily sweeping and parking properly: if you have frayed wires then if yours isn't stopping in strange places yet, I am afraid it soon will be...

David, when you say stopping in strange places do you by any chance mean the whole car?

Reason I ask is that having driven 130 miles last Sunday evening, totally trouble free but through torrential rain, I had a call from my wife yesterday who was about to do the return trip and said it wouldn't start. I initially thought I must have left an interior light on but she says the dash lit up as it should and the headlights work its just that there is absolutely nothing at the point when you expect the starter motor to kick in.

Aidan

Unfortunately I only meant the rear wiper stopping in strange places. :(

If it's not even trying, I wonder if your starter motor has gone? Mine went a few weeks ago with basically no warning - twice it seemed to me it sounded a bit odd on starting, and then third time it just didn't do anything at all.

You mention the rain, though - hmmm...480s and electrics...

Has she tried a jump start?
