WANTED: Load sensing brake proportioning valve

Cleaned up the garage and found some parts you want to sell? Or are you looking for that one part? You can advertise or request just about anything that has to do with the Volvo 480 in here: brochures, towing-hooks, antenna's, etc etc...

WANTED: Load sensing brake proportioning valve

Post by Filvas » Tue Sep 27, 2016 6:37 pm

Hi!

I need a new load sensing load proportioning Valve for my 1987 Volvo 480, but I cant seem to find a (working) replacement part anywhere. If you have one I would be very happy to take it off your hands! I'm situated in Vantaa, Finland. I'm also open for any tips and suggestions where I could find a new part.

As this is my first forum post, I would like to thank everyone for the helpful posts you've made over the years. They have made my last year and a half with my Volvo 480 much less of a hassle (although it sure has been bit of a hassle).

There are less then twenty Volvo 480s on the roads of Finland so parts are becoming exceedingly rare. :wall:

Regards,

It was deleted on later 480's so you could do away with it.

I understand if you want to keep originality though. My '87 one has one.

Thats good to know, but how does that work in practice? I just remove the part and rewire the brake lines without it? :o

I probably need a statement of some sort from Volvo to pass the annual inspection.

Just checked:

"With effect from model year 1998 the load conscious reducing valve is discontinued on all variants and replaced by two pressure conscious reducing valves located on the master cylinder.
The brake pipes to the rear wheels are connected directly to the wheel cylinders"

So, yes, they were removed, but we're replaced by these other valves up in the engine bay on the master cylinder.

You'll have more chance of getting these valves on the master cylinder from a scrap 480 as they must have ‎been fitted from 1988 to 1995. The valve you and I have was only fitted for two years max.

I will attach the service bulletin for you later should you need to prove the difference for your test. ‎

What is wrong with yours anyway? Leaking?‎

Thanks a million for your answers and posts! Adjustor arm (?) on mine is loose, so it didn't pass the annual inspection. My guess is that the little spring and/or some other part inside has failed, and it doesn't really seem functioning when you look and feel it.

I'll look for a new master cylinder now! Thanks again!

If you have a working one lying around I'd be interested for sure!

On second though, these are be for a RHD car, right? Mine is LHD.

I've managed to order two (unused!) reducing valves for my Volvo. According to the service bulletin above, I should renew my master brake cylinder. I take it so that I have to order a replacement part that supports these reducing valve, so a 1987 master cylinder would'nt work.

I'm guessing this should be the correct part? By all logic this part should be of the newer version:

skandix.de delete space here /en/spare-parts/brakes/brake-master-cylinder/master-brake-cylinder-for-vehicles-without-abs/1020751/

(sorry about the broken url, wouldn't let me post it otherwise)

I'm asking here since the good people at Skandix didn't know themselves. :wall:

https://www.ersatzteile-wug.de/en/brake ... o-abs.html

Steel unions into aluminium body mean that removing this from my car was always going to go wrong-- threads completely eaten away after 30 years.

After much searching and about to add the later 480's valves at the ‎master cylinder I found this one for sale in Germany. Let's see if they really have it in stock on Monday when they open for business again. Unfortunately 119EUR, but they must know they have a rare part.

I wish I could work out if it is fitted to other cars but Volvo P/N: 3412630 doesn't seem to x-ref to anything.

Might see if I can have the original reworked in the future to take larger unions and then a reducer. ‎Will do as a spare.
