Are you SURE it's the speedo sensor? Most of the speedo problems are caused by faulty connections on the instrument cluster PCB. Proper soldering of the connector pins usually does the trick.

Also, you could try and clean the speedo sensor connector in the engine bay, and the sensor itself of course. These things have no active electronics, it's just an electromagnetic pick-up, they can only go wrong by mechanical wear caused by the gearbox oil that's thrown at them.
I could check and (if necessary) repair the cluster for you for the cost of postage and a few beers, but I'm not in the UK.

No Brinkie. In my case everything was fine with the instruments board. It was the speedo sensor all the way.
I read GlasgowJim once that he would change speedo sensor first and move from there if things didn't solve. I wish I would have gone that way.
Gremlins? I swear I didn't feed the car after 12 pm,but I got Gremlins, Creeters, Jason, Freddy and the damn Chucky.
BTW the only way to get a speed sensor is trying scrapyard. Shared by all 400 series number 3413744 till the end of 1992 and 3467846 from there. Don't know chassis number break.
