Wanted: CEM for 1989 ES 1.7

Cleaned up the garage and found some parts you want to sell? Or are you looking for that one part? You can advertise or request just about anything that has to do with the Volvo 480 in here: brochures, towing-hooks, antenna's, etc etc...

Wanted: CEM for 1989 ES 1.7

Post by WRDendy » Fri Jun 25, 2010 5:30 pm

My CEM has died (see my earlier threads on indicator problems) so I need a replacement - a local garage said they could get me a new one for around £600 but obviously that's probably (if not definitely) more than I would be able to sell the car for, so I need to find a used replacement or it's a write-off, and I really don't want it to come to that.

It's an early-model CEM, it does the wiper trick when you floor it but none of the newer stuff. The only number I have managed to get off it is '434379' so hopefully someone can help with identification.

Currently the car is off the road and I really need it to get around so I will pay whatever the asking price for a CEM with fast shipping.

Thanks guys!

£600?! blimey, is your garage on something? I was quoted something like 250 once, for a CEMIII, then they said that volvo no longer make them, so none available new. Could always be different for earlier CEM's though....

I'd keep an eye ont scrappers, or jim

This guy might have what you need:

I saw this advertised for spares on RetroRides the other day, but I think a K-reg 1993 might be CEMIII, not the original CEM as you'd need. Might be worth contacting the guy to find out though. Easy way to tell the difference between the two (in case you don't know) is that the original CEM is a rectangular box, whereas CEMIII is a rectangular box, with a corner missing.

Fingers crossed I've got one on it's way from a kind bloke who's breaking an H-reg 1.7ES he believes is from 1990. Mine is an F-reg '89 so I could be in luck. The garage is a small local operation that my family has had dealings with for years so I doubt they're trying to shaft me, they actually made the point themselves that £600 really isn't worth it. As of the end of the working day on Friday they were going through the CEM looking for dry joints on the PCB, soldering connections that looked iffy and trying it in the car but no joy so far. I'm going to take the 'new' CEM down as soon as it turns up and see if I have any luck, the guy I bought it from tested all the functions while I was on the phone to him and it worked fine on his car so like I said fingers crossed!

On a side note has anyone ever transplanted a 440/460 CEM to a 480? There are quite a few on ebay so I might pick one up for spares if they're the same.
