Wanted Cetus wheel or wheels

Cleaned up the garage and found some parts you want to sell? Or are you looking for that one part? You can advertise or request just about anything that has to do with the Volvo 480 in here: brochures, towing-hooks, antenna's, etc etc...

Wanted Cetus wheel or wheels

Post by Sunny Sid » Sun Jul 17, 2022 2:11 pm

Hi All. I’m looking for a single (or set, if I can afford) Cetus 15” 4-stud wheel rims with or without tyres (pref without). I had a near MoT failure last year, pothole damage. Fingers crossed for this year (due August), but I’d rather have a decent spare on standby.

I’m in South Hertfordshire with a ‘95 Celebration running and an ‘87 ES for spares (was much loved from new but met a too deep puddle in a Herts lane and proved conclusively that water is not compressible. :cryhard: How many other 480s have expired from this cause?).

Cheers

Hey Oscar, I don’t have a wheel but interested to know if your 87 car is a D-reg?

Ah good to know! There’s a member on here looking for two engine sensors (coolant temperature and air intake temperature) which won’t fit your later car if fancy selling them.

Hi again, James.

My ES was first registered on 14/10/87, to me.

VIN number ends 518268, which I guess is the chassis number?

I see you’re restoring a very early 480. Good on ya, buddy. I’ve never considered myself to be ‘breaking’ mine, rather I didn’t want to part with it at first and then realised that many parts never changed – or were little changed – over the intervening years. In fact a salvaged crankshaft position sensor saved my Celebration’s bacon only a couple of weeks ago. So I won’t part with anything that could be a life saver on mine, obvs.

Just seen your latest response. I’m no techie, can you point me in the right direction for those sensors?

Be lucky

User “davekit” memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=21598 could do with these:

Air intake temperature sensor: which is mounted in the big air intake pipe after the air filter. It should have a black body (important) and will just pull out with a bit of hand force.

Coolant temperature sensor: which is screwed in to the engine block just to the last spark plug on the gearbox end of the engine (right hand side of you are looking at the engine from the front of the car). It should also have a black body (important).

Actually the crankshaft sensor from the early car could possibly be set at a slightly different angle as some early cars had these modified; so you may have slightly modified the ignition timing on your 2.0. Probably not a big deal but worth being aware of! A new part is very cheap if you want to make sure you have the correct one on the 2.0.

That’s cool that you bought it new and still have it. I’m sure Dave would be very grateful for the rare sensors on his early car as someone seems to have thrown his away and fitted the later ones which don’t work on his car— so it is running with “default” values as the engine ECU is confused about its life. You 100% won’t want either of these for your 2.0, but completely understand if you don’t want to sell bits you ever plan on getting the 87 car back on the road.

OK, James, I’ll take a look at those parts once the weather’s cooler. I’m old and aim to stay indoors for the next day or three. My ES is under a tarp outside. As for getting it going again... I wish, but not the slightest chance. Very rusty.

Re the timing question with the crank sensor: thanks for the info. Strangely, I couldn’t source one that was described as for my car and year. They all look the same (except some have one extra connection), and I was advised that they’re the same so I took a chance. It runs well, but I will bear your info in mind. Thanks again.

Meanwhile, those Cetus wheels?

Be in touch in a while.

Hi James, I took a look at my 87 ES today and took a pic or two to check if what I think are the required sensors are the right goods. Trouble is how to share those images on here. I don't have the necessary ‘hosting’ facility it seems. Are you on FB Messenger? I know how to share on that.

Whatever, the only sensor I can see in the air intake is mounted on/very near the carb. It is black. The one on the engine where you describe is cylindrical, silver metal and vertically-mounted on a bracket. The connector block is black. Do those sound like what is wanted?

Hey. Thanks for the pics.

Those parts are:
2nd pic: the throttle position switch (tells the car to handle idling on its own when your foot is off the throttle) and
1st pic: the Idle Air Control valve (modulates the air in to the engine to idle, when the throttle switch tells it it).

I will see if I can get some pictures and upload to guide you better later but thanks very much for looking!

Air intake temperature sensor. Wrong engine and wrong colour sensor as it’s blue but the idea is the same on all of them. To the top right of the picture is the air filter.

Coolant temperature sensor:

Not the best picture to show the location, sorry. The sensor will be hidden behind the spark plug wires, near where you found the idle air control valve earlier.

Hi James. Apologies for the delay - otherwise engaged. I’ve located the sensor in the air intake and it is black! But the one in the engine casing is proving more elusive. I’ve found only one that answers the description of being screwed into the casing (too far BEHIND the engine to get a meaningful pic) but it has only ONE WIRE leading to it, whereas the illustrated sensor appears to have two terminals. Is this LIKELY to be the one required? If so I’ll have a go at getting it out for a better look.

Hi James & Sid
Just picked this up. I'm afraid any work on cars has stopped for the last few weeks, due to a recurrence of a back problem which makes it too painful to lean over bonnets or crawl underneath. Fortunately, I can still drive, and the back has improved a bit. I would really like to buy these sensors.

I did buy another ECU which was supposed to be a later unit, with a view to fitting it and some later sensors, but it looked suspiciously like it was an earlier ECU. Didn't get any further, due to my back!

I had the same problem locating the coolant temp sensor! It is on the front of the engine, right hand end looking from the front. Under the silver cylindrical 'thing' the plug wires are clipped to a bracket. The sensor is under the bracket, and has two contacts. The sensor on the back of the engine with one contact is for the temperature gauge.

To add to my woes, we went to a kitcar show yesterday, and the Marlin (kitcar) broke down on the A1(M) on the way back. I'm pretty sure it is the fuel pump which has died. Got rescued after 2 hours stood in an ant's nest!!!

Please let me know how much you want for the 2 sensors, Sid. They would be great help.
Dave

Hi Dave. Sorry to hear of your various woes, buddy. You do seem to be having a bad time. My real world name’s Oscar, by the way.

Clearly one of my sensors – air intake temp – is what you want, but I still haven’t established for sure about the coolant temperature sensor. On my car this sensor (or what appears to otherwise fit the description) is located behind the engine (not where James seems to be suggesting it should be), screwed into the engine housing (as per James’s illustration) but has only one wire connecting to it, although the illustration shows 2 pins for connections. I’d appreciate if you or James could confirm that this is in fact what you need before I get stuck into removing it. Once we can establish that I’m not going to send you something you don’t need maybe you’d like to PM me to discuss price and delivery, all being well.

EDIT: Sorry didn’t full read your post before replying. I’ll take another shifty and get back to you.

I hope I have the donor parts to restore healthy life to your 480.

Cheers for now. Oscar.

Hi again, Dave. Ok, I’ve got the coolant sensor now. What a game. That was WELL hidden beneath the bracket with the HT leads, as you described. In fact I still couldn’t ID it clearly, or remove it, until I’d removed the bracket and all the other kit above it.

I’ll PM you re price/delivery details.

Cheers
