This one has the dismal engine, needs arch repair and seat retrim, but for a running, driving car this one seems for once, to be at a reasonable price

Hey! I have that engine!

It's not really dismal, just a bit dismal.

this is the car that he won for £10, then destroyed the head gasket on the way home, after driving with no temp gauge on the info centre and suffering water pump failure.....

Are you able to get de-cat on that or is it a year too late?

The MoT "cat test" starts for cars registered post 1st August 1992 - with exemptions.

It is mandatory for all cars registered after 1st August 1995 to pass this test.

Between 1st August 1992 and 1st August 1995 there is a grace period for some cars.

Basically, some low volume manufacturers didn't pull their socks up in time and applied for cat test exemption as their designs weren't ready. It was agreed this exemption would run out by 1st August 1995.

Whether your car is included in this three year window for a cat test is determined by the following publication HERE which is up to the 19th edition and the MoT tester must check.

If you have trouble sleeping, it is a perfect bedtime read.

All 480's are listed in this publication by engine code which means our date for cat testing is 1st August 1992 across everything.

My TVR was registered December 1992 (so post the August introduction) and was never fitted with cats from factory. It is not found 'in the bible' so has exemption. It was precisely the car the three year window was designed for as TVR were a bit rubbish with regulations

The other bit is that the match needs to be EXACT.

So, if you had, as an example, a 1994 480 with a 2.0 16V engine transplanted in it, well, there's no match, because it never existed so it's back to the "old" emissions test figures (3.5% CO, 1200PPM HC).

I just use K = Kat reqd, :D

need to investigate the loop-hole as to what makes it 'not exact'
