Volvo 480ES Green - 2.0 Manual

Cleaned up the garage, found parts laying around, but it turned out to be a complete Volvo 480? If you want to sell your car (480 only) you can place an advert here.

Wonder how old those photos are? We’ve not had a day like that round here for months!

Quite rare wheels on it too - Volvo Anteres were an option I believe

Not quite - the 14" Antares became the standard fit on the ES (only) for the 1995 models (which this will be).

I've not researched at all, but from the couple of pictures here, I've seen worse up for a lot more...

Totally agree. I'd go even further; those wheels anger me

Not only do they break the golden rule of spokes never to protrude beyond the outer fascia, but they are also 14"... on a sports coupe... in 1995.

Also, I don't look at them and think Volvo. They remind me of a period MIM offering called the IMOLA-2...

Image

It's like Volvo thumbed through a copy of Max Power circa 1995, and gave MIM a call.

We had seen 15" wheels since the Turbo and TT so why oh why revert to 14" for a finale?

The Calibra Turbo had 16" wheels by 1991!

Happy to be corrected, but I think this was the last official publicity press photo that Volvo ever took of the ES...

Image

I mean this is run-out... this is its "swan song".... and we get 14" knock-off wheels and not even a front air-dam. Pittyful.

What angers me even more is Volvo themselves use this very image to this day in their own 480 synopsis here. I mean c'mon Volvo, use a TT for Pete's sake.

Just look what Steve Harper had penned a DECADE earlier...

Image

I think arguably the TT got the closest to the G13 sketches in becoming a reality.

I am not accepting the line of defence that Volvo didn't know what cool was back then either. 850 was kicking butt in 1995... we had a TV advert of a T-5 dodging exploding boxes dropped from a plane, Colour Code 607 "cream yellow" rocked the motoring press and, after the novelty estate in 1994, the TWR 850 BTCC saloon looked the absolute business....

Image

It's almost like Volvo wanted it to fail.

As you were

Well that is certainly a passionate post there Jay. I agree wheels that protrude out very easily look awful, what is annoying with this is that the original 14" Pollux Wheels look really good and really crisp, these are just blobs, Max Power could probably do better!

Granted, I am not sure whether they are better or worse than the Cetus (I know they are a club favourite  ) I guess straight lines weren't fashionable in '95

14" I find is just right, the bigger rims on the Rover require one to take careful evasion of potholes, the Pollux do just roll over them, sidewalls are underrated
Current Jobs to do (23/1/22):
Fix Central Locking
Fix drivers side speaker
Annoying Scratching Squeak
Water leaks
Complete Front O/S rebuild

 Cetus are far far far better looking Ben!

Whilst not as passionate about it as Jay, I too think this was a real cheap shot from Volvo who just didn't care anymore.

No wonder (IMHO ;) ) photos of an ES on the Antares wheels don't appear in the brochures of the time. Even the older 7 spoke ones looked better, and that's saying something!

Just thinking - look at this thread!

Are we all really sad peope getting so energised over a set of wheels?

Might be better if we focused on the rest of the car...

Truth has been spoken...

This one doesn't look half bad, even the wheels add some kudos to it

This is the first time I've had chance to look into this one.
I like the look of it and the colour.

Good news is; It's just passed an MOT today with no advisories. Got to be a plus point.

That is very worthwhile news!

Yes, I like the look of this one too. Racing Green metallic - same colour as my GT and one of the best in my (ok, biased ;) ) book. The only thing I would definitely look to do is change the wheels, but that is hardly a deal-breaking matter

Hope it goes to someone on here; a good and loving home is probably all it needs to get back up to top class standard.

Sorry for my wheel rant  - it was aimed more @ Volvo than this poor defenceless ES!

Anyway, car looks genuine and I love the Lancaster Volvo Colchester window sticker - and that its for sale in Colchester to this day. Good tail lights. Can't help but think those arches are a ticking time bomb (as most are). You can just see them starting to penetrate the paint at the rear bumper. Lets hope the new owner goes in with eyes wide open.

As David says, seen much less priced for much more. I wish it a great future home.
