Volvo 480ES - 1.7 Manual (eBay Auction)

Cleaned up the garage, found parts laying around, but it turned out to be a complete Volvo 480? If you want to sell your car (480 only) you can place an advert here.

Volvo 480ES - 1.7 Manual (eBay Auction)

Post by Helmert3 » Sun Dec 13, 2020 6:09 pm

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/volvo-480SE/ ... Swwz1f1JkS

Okay fellas, I know ive been on the search a while, and most likely have no intentions to have anything to do with the car above (other than posting it here for a few other people to take a look at) but what is going on with pricing at the moment, earlier in the year where I wasnt really in the position to be looking at cars there were more than a few times I was seeing nice condition cars selling for around £800->£1800. But now this is asking the high end money for a car that hasnt seen the road in about a decade.

Is something going on with pricing, or has the legendary 480 managed to double in price in the space of a few months?

Will also post some photos below from the listing:

Now that is very tasty indeed!

Doesn't look too bad, and the Reg is there last MOT was 2012 and 20k on the clock, but that has been replaced as it was 55k in '05

All in all F-Reg cars are quite a good package as provided you get the B18E you get a nice driving car with potentially less issues than the really early ones suffered from*, at least in my experience

*See autocar long term test I think

Are those the rare side decals down the side?
Current Jobs to do (23/1/22):
Fix Central Locking
Fix drivers side speaker
Annoying Scratching Squeak
Water leaks
Complete Front O/S rebuild

I haven't looked further than the ebay info and this thread but at first glance that doesn't look bad at all. I'll post further with more detailed comments in due course, perhaps.

OK, mileage details and MOT history show change of speedo, but the mileage is given in the ad as approx 70,000 so it doesn't look as if someone is trying to pull a fast one there.

Wonder where it's been for the last 7-8 years and why it's being sold now?

If it is as rust-free as suggested that's a very good sign, but I am slightly wary when people want big money but can't even be bothered to invest ins something like a new battery to help the sale. Makes me suspicious as to what else, in truth, is needed.

Helmert - I think what we're seeing is a genuine surge in interest in the 480. On the back of that sellers are trying for higher prices - whether buyers are paying them or not is another matter, but this is how values do eventually start to rise. This is where the idea of rescuing them comes into its own, because the prices for selling in will be driven by the desire to find good homes rather than trying to make a fast buck.

Ben - you are right, those look like the extra striping kit...have you ever seen Sylvia's Lily? White with dark striping kit; looks great!

Honestly it does look like a nice car, and I probably will keep my eye on it (Ideally looking for something with an MOT myself) but yeah there is certainly a rise in interest from what ive noticed across the year.

Ill keep posting what I find, and hopefully something that ticks the few boxes im looking for comes along :D

One thing I will say, though, because this is a bug-bear of mine

This car is a 480ES. Like the big clue that lies in the badge on its tailgate...

Despite what some will try to tell you, including DVLA, there was NEVER a "480SE".

There was a 440SE, there was a 460SE, but NO 480SE.

UK had 480S, 480ES, 480TURBO, 480GT, and 480 Celebration (which had the simple tailgate badge "480").

The GT and Celebration were both special editions and limited editions, but they were NOT 480SE's.

There was a two-tone Limited Edition and a Paris Blue Limited Edition - both carried the badge "Limited Edition" on the rear below the lights. But the actual model for both cars, as stated on the tailgate, was "480ES".

What actually happened was that sometimes during the registration process dealers or clerical staff transposed the ES letters because "SE" was a far more common UK car model generally across many brands. So some V5's say "480SE" They are no more correct than those for a number of 480ES cars that the V5 says are GTs - that is why a search on sites like "How many left" gives you figures adding up to more than the 250 GTs actually produced for the UK.

Just flagging this up in case anyone falls into the trap of thinking they might be getting something special with this car or others similarly marketed :D

Yes that is a lovely one that, wonder why it wasn't more popular?

Yes it is good that there is a surge in interest I think, but will I have to get worried about these going crazy (unlikely) or using mine on a daily basis and it getting nicked (more likely)?

I don't think they'll go crazy ever, at least not any time soon. They may become more nickable though...what you need to do, obviously ;) , is get a second one/ Then you can use one as the daily driver, risking leaving it around on the mean streets of Hampshire, and keep the other for full restoration/special use, bringing out when you will be able to keep a careful eye on it

Well I've got an eye on R3 in case something happens to mine in the meantime, but am not 'speaking' for it as I can't commit at the moment space wise

From what I can see in the pictures, the stripes are not the pukka Volvo ones. I know mine are because they came in a Volvo tub with the correct part no on it. Lurking in my garage is a pair of Paris Blue wings bearing the blue version with the same front end. This is what the front end should look like

Image

Maybe someone with better eyesight than me can see if this is present on the ebay car. At the back, the black and grey stripes cross over 3-4 inches from the end, but we can't see much of the back end in the ebay photos. This of course immediately raises suspicions about the condition of the rear arches. As dc has said, why not replace the battery ? Not sure if the New breaks and pads are on the list of needs, or something that has been done. At this sort of price whatever the reserve is, I'd expect a full MoT. A lot could have gone wrong in the time it's been off the road. (ask me how I know....)
Sylvia

Snazzy - 1993 Paris Blue ES red dipstick 2.0i bought 2001
Lethal Lily - 1991 White Turbo
Paris the Unicorn - 1991 Paris Edition
hubby has
Sven - 1994 Racing Green GT
Evil Eva - 1992 Paris Blue Turbo

no previous 480s - can't bear to sell any

So, spidey senses tingling straight away here.....

1) 3 of the pictures are screenshots from his phone? makes me think that he's uploading pictures from the previous eBay auction (9 months ago!)
Screams laziness, which is further added to by the fact that 3 & 4th picture is the same damn picture, just cropped. Also, ask yourself, when was the last time we had sunshine like that? So, are we looking at recent pictures or not?

2) Not MOT? I'm sorry, you want me to pay £1800+ (that's the starting bid remember) for a car with NO MOT?

3) Same again for lack of battery.

4) Same again for 2 sentence description. (technically 1, but I've added the full stop the lazy sod couldn't be bothered to add himself).

In summary, I'm not even going to do my usual assessment of the car, because if the seller can't be arsed to present it properly, I can't be arsed to look at it!

Ah, the new year chancers are out again!

There’s another one popped up on Facebook £1200; all the usual patter... new battery, burst into life, barn find, one owner...

Forgets completely to mention no MOT and previously failed MOT for rotten front subframe....

If it’s the blue one it has rotten rear arches and drivers door as well as faded rear lights. It’s worth less than £500.

That's the one Norm - It's both doors, faded paint too! £200 in my eyes
