1994 GT - eBay.

Cleaned up the garage, found parts laying around, but it turned out to be a complete Volvo 480? If you want to sell your car (480 only) you can place an advert here.

There were only 14 taxed in Q2 of this year, with another 43 are on sorn.

Ideally you'd want to know the MOT status of all 57 of them, as it gives a better insight on survival.

Interestingly, there was a maximum of 353 in 1994.

Hello GCooper
I recently joined 480GT ownership as well. Looks like a nice example you got there though. Well done.

Thanks, the only problems I can find apart from MOT advisories is a chip in the bumper and the bulb in the info center (still works but very dim)

I bought it but the clutch isn't great, any advice?
How much can I expect the cost of replacement to be including labour

Check first that it IS the clutch.

Have someone press the pedal and check the bulkhead isn't flexing.
Then remove the cable and make sure it runs smoothly.

Oh, and congrats on your purchase, lets have LOTS of lovely pictures! :hopping:

There are 3 Gts regularly at meets, all green. My hubby has one along with dcwalker and jaster. Ours and I think DC's are currently on sorn but definitely alive and well. It will make a nice change to have a red one join us..

Welcome now you are a fully fledged 480 owner! Looking forward to seeing pictures...

Re the clutch, in what way is it "isn't great"? If it's very hard to change gear, check cable run and bulkhead as Jeff says. Also check the clutch adjustment which is easy on these cars. If it is more that it is hard to find gears, is the gear stick floppy? That can mean new bushes needed. Also worth checking gearbox oil level and quality - low level or sludge will both make changing gear difficult.

If you rule out all that, then it probably is the clutch itself. Fairly major job, can be done DIY if you are a half decent mechanic and have tools. But a long involved job, so expensive on labour if paying a garage...

Hope that helps a bit!

Congratulations GC on becoming a new owner! My 480 is my first car as well and they are very good to learn on, being powerful enough for modern traffic and everything you need, without being lairy.

In regards to what DC said on gearbox oil, I recommend that you change this as a matter of practice anyway, same with the cam belt. Bear in mind that the gearbox and engine oil is only a available from France as an Elf grade, at least for my 1.7 B18E, however I am sure someone on here can clarify that.

I look forward to seeing what adventures your wedge takes you on!

Cheers,

Ben :)

our local motor factors had shed loads the last time I was in.... (the bottles had the correct grade marked on them, but system said otherwise, I didn't argue at a £5 a bottle )

I did offer to bulk purchase for folks, but no takers.

Gearbox oil must be GL4, not GL5. There is some debate on this, but to be sure play it safe with GL4. Elf also to be sure of getting the right stuff. Searching eBay for Elf Tranself NFP 75W-80 brings up 9 options in the UK for the gearbox oil, so its not difficult to get hold of at all. The Elf oil is not magic, its just difficult to make sure you get the right stuff with lots of companies (producing and/or selling) out there that lie about compatibility. Elf are a known quantity for us 480 owners.

For the engine oil, any semi-synthetic 10W40 will be fine and likely better than what the 80's engine was designed to run with. Put Castrol GTX or Magnatec in if you are feeling lux. I wouldn't waste your money putting in a fully synthetic 5W40 oil in, just change the oil yearly. Look in your owner's manual and you'll see a few grades are acceptable, dependant upon the temperature outside. In the UK 10W40 is in our temp. range; so is 15W40 but the less so so don't bother with it.

I think my recent purchase will have put that count up +1 (mine was SORN). I think the one you have bought popped up on eBay the same day that I picked mine up (also eBay).
