Very Very clean one on C&C, 21k miles

Cleaned up the garage, found parts laying around, but it turned out to be a complete Volvo 480? If you want to sell your car (480 only) you can place an advert here.

Cassette holder, barely used, if it wasn't for the black rubbing strips I'd say it was perfect!

Plate is also in Serck font I think...

Looks smart. I douby very much its a 2.0 like the badge states though. I wonder how much you'd get back from selling that plate on?

Confusing that it has the early black bumpers with the later seats - it dates from 1990 so that puts it in the changeover period. James is right about the engine size though, it's a 1.7. But why has it got the wrong badge ??

I doubt somehow that they would trial a 2.0 in 1990 and we wouldn't know about it...

Yes, Listed as 1.7 on Car Tax Checker. And lost 1600 miles in 2012/13.

https://cartaxcheck.co.uk/free-car-check/?vrm=SHE182

Does seem a more sensible option to sell the plate alone though with that price tag. It's not that much of a faff.

Hmm...it looks good from the photos, but something doesn't quite add up to me.

Black bumpers by the time of that interior were only on the S model as far as I recall (without checking); black side strips go with that interior but if it's a 1990 ES then the black bumpers don't. Perhaps this is one of those cars from slap-bang in the middle of a changeover period with an odd combination? Or perhaps the original owner specified black bumpers for some reason? Or...perhaps something's been replaced for whatever reason?

By 1990 the alloys were the 14" Atlas - yet this one has Pollux...

There is no front photo to confirm the presence of fog-lights and none that categorically confirm whether the moonroof is there.

All this is raising a suspicion in my mind - many S models, especially early ones, were up-specced by their first purchasers. I wonder if that's what we actually have here? The S did not have alloys, which would explain an owner later replacing the steel wheels with genuine 480 alloys, albeit the earlier ones.

True, it's badged as ES...but someone has enjoyed playing around with the badges. I say that because the "2.0i" badge is NOT original - as far as I recall the only 480s to ever display an engine size badge were the later two-tones, which said "2.0i" - presumably to distinguish them from the previous 1.7s. No 1990 480 should have an engine badge, and even in respect of the two-tones it's in the wrong place anyway!

And definitely, as others have said, it will be a 1.7 engine - for 1990 it should be the B18FP (B18EP plus cat).

I hasten to add, none of this necessarily makes it a bad car! But I would certainly want to know a bit more about it before committing...

As Edie says, why not sell the plate separately?

And finally from me (for now) who on earth goes to the length of specifying a blown side-light bulb in an ad? It's an MOT failure and cheaply rectified - for heaven's sake, just change the bulb and sell the car as having no faults!! Actually, and better still for that money, MOT the thing - unless there are reasons it won't pass?

As I said at the start - hmmm.....

Just picked up on that.... No MOT? But it says it’s valid until January next year.

Maybe they’re just not car people! That might answer all of our queries.

On the subject of the age vs interior vs black bumpers, my "good" 480 was first reg'd May 1991, she's an H reg ES s/r with that interior, had 14" atlus, black bumpers, black side strips but the later style mirrors with a moon roof and a B18FP - where does that place it in the mystery time line parts bin ?

Erm...it just highlights how random these cars were!!

Interesting you have an ES that late with black bumpers, but I guess it shows the one we are discussing in this thread might just be another such example. I can see in the photos it has the older style mirrors, which is in keeping with black bumpers...

Also, on looking again I think I can see a moonroof in one photo - given the tailgate still looks to have original dealer stickers I guess perhaps there is no valid reason to doubt the "ES" label after all.

Despite me thinking it' raises questions, you'll probably find that the wheels were just leftover Pollux in the spares bins too

Ho hum ;)

I've checked and it's definitely registered as a 1.7 ES S/R (yes, I had to go back to the photos and squint to check the moon roof was there as well)
Interestingly, the general 1990 480 brochure shows an ES with black bumpers and a turbo with colour-coded ones. The only cloth seats shown in the brochure are the late ones. The undated dedicated Turbo brochure shows the early seats. Just seems to be whatever was to hand in the changeover period.
David will no doubt be pleased to be reunited with his brochure file which is still with me after a rather longer 'borrow' than anticipated.
The 2litre badge is indeed in the wrong place, should be lower as on my Paris Blue ES from 1993, definitely wrong for a 1990 car so someone has added that (unless of course it's had a replacement back end  )
For me, it's far too much for a car without an MoT even with the private plate.

I am obviously getting rusty without my trusty brochure collection to refer to! As you so rightly say, Sylvia, 92 - late 93 model cars carried the 2.0i badge. But not a 1990 1.7, and not where it is on this one!

I am rather coming to the conclusion that the 87-88 and post-1992 cars are give or take in line with the brochure specs, but anything from the period of great and fluctuating change (89-91/2) is a bit of a lottery...

As far as the price of this one goes, I think it would be better to sell the plate and the car separately. The person to whom the plate might be relevant may not want the car, after all. Personally I don't think I could ever justify paying for a personal plate - unless perhaps "DCW 480" came up for sale on the same weekend as I won the lottery...

And before anyone says "but your GT has a cherished plate", it is a case in point - she bears the original registration that the original purchaser (late father of my seller) paid for, which is his wife's initials. When I viewed her, she was carrying the fantastic plate "480 VOL", but I declined the seller's kind offer that for a further £4000 I could keep that one on the car!! Accordingly the seller transferred that plate and kept it on another of his cars, meaning Lily reverted to her original plate, which also happened to be a cherished plate.

I agree it makes the car stand out, but if anyone here has the initials MHC and wants to buy it I certainly wouldn't hesitate to part with it for an appropriate sum!!

Now moved off C&C and on to the the 'Bay.

Minus the plate but with MOT and a few better pictures.

Quite a clean and consistent MOT history.

And down from £6.5 to £4.5k.

It does look very nice, I have to admit. Happier now I can see it better and it has an MOT!!

More realistic on the price front, too...

Anyone on here taken with it??

I wonder if the bumpers are replacement bumpers, left uncoloured? For as much as I know only very early and basic 480's had black bumpers. At least over here.

The luscious paintwork probably has had a thorough polish. Expect it to fade.

I think this car (SHE 12) is now back on old plate H559 OAB, still keeping incorrect 2.0 badge, and at vastly inflated price on eBay

I am having a good chuckle with the “Lambda Sound” which he really does think is the stereo system and not just a typo.

Rest of the advert is awful flannel to read. I am pleased to see that he can do some simple maths that is meant to astound us (a service for every 2504 miles driven).

OMFG it’s shiny! Has the engine been varnished?

Just goes to show it’s for sale by someone who bought the car not for pleasure, but for profit.

However, your getting two cars for the price of one!
