Very Very clean one on C&C, 21k miles

Cleaned up the garage, found parts laying around, but it turned out to be a complete Volvo 480? If you want to sell your car (480 only) you can place an advert here.

Is it like Spinal Tap where the volume knob goes up to 14.7?
That was too expensive to implement, it only goes to 11...

I like how he’s talking about it like it’s been his from new.
The entire show is a big fat (extremely slidy and glossy) ’Trader’ red flag.

Hi everyone - new member alert! And joined after seeing this advert on eBay and doing some research into the car! I was attracted but put off by the fact that he probably got this car for £4K and threw a grand at most and some elbow grease into it!! While the wording is complete flannel and doesn’t shout trader he clearly is and the eBay name kind of confirms that. He isn’t far from me and his listing often come up in my searches - one of those guys who hunts out low milers and flips them.

Curious as to how much he would come down - I guess in the 5-6k this would be good? There cant be many with this mileage and condition? I am now searching sale ads as my 480 itch may need scratching!! Need to make space in the fleet though so think the Clio 172 may have to go!!

If it is as perfect as it looks then, in the current mad climate, I would hope to pay around £5000 - £6000 for it myself.

Welcome :D There will be a few running specimens for sale that have been rescued and sorted soon. See Jifflemon's posts with 'R' number titles. Much more affordable if you're in the market for a 480.

Hello and welcome Seacow !
This ES is very overpriced ! The low mileage is probably genuine, and dry storage is definitely an advantage, but on the down side, it's a late 1.7 with a cat - if you want decent performance from it you'd have to get rid of that. Perfectly legal as it's old enough not to need one for the MoT. It's quite a quirky one - old style bumpers with late style interior fabric on old style seats. Then there's the wrong badge on the replacement rear hatch - not a major issue if you can find a correct one to replace it. The fact that the seller doesn't know what Lambda Sond means (Swedish for oxygen sensor) tells me he doesn't know anything about Volvos of the period. I suspect he's done nothing to the car except polish it and get it mot'd. Personally, I wouldn't value it at much more than 2k. I've just had a massive row with one of our insurance companies who didn't want to increase my low-mileage and equally solid turbo above 3k agreed valuation. The paintwork is immaculate, it has a half leather interior, leather steering wheel, roller cover in the boot, cup holder armrest (rare optional extras) and upgraded Volvo wheels. They caved in eventually and agreed to my demand of 4k. This ES is quite basic and there are far more ES models about than turbos, which are critically endangered.

We have been watching the downward spiral of the price on a low mileage white ES which also started off in cloud cockoo land. Last ad I saw for it was £1995 which is much more realistic.

So, on to the rescue cars - we currently have two 1.7 ES, both very solid bodywork, both well looked after by a long term owner from new who sadly died so they fell into the wrong hands. Both are now with Jeff, our volunteer specialist mechanic/electrician/you name it as long as it's not bodywork! Once finished, they will have been gone through with a fine tooth comb by someone who knows the 480 intimately. Neither will be priced at anything like the money this chap thinks he can get.

Whatever you end up buying, I hope you are happy with your choice - if there's anything you'd like to know about what's available there are plenty of friends on here only too willing to help. Fingers crossed, we can start having meetings again before too much longer - usually mobile ones where we drive in convoy about 100 miles, so less distance to travel for our more remote members to come along for at least part of the day. It would be great if you could join us, with or without a 480. All you need is enthusiasm !

Wow thanks for all the helpful replies! I have fancied a 480 on and off for years - I just like cars and keep changing! I have a 1989 E30 BMW that I have had for 10 years and a Porsche 996 that I have had my fun in and will move in the spring and a Clio 172 that I bought on a whim and haven’t really jelled with.

I spoke to the seller of this one and he has put Falken tyres on it ( I mean why bother frankly!) and spent 400 on the cam belts and servicing so he really is looking to double his money!!

Anyway will keep an eye on here and see if something grabs my fancy!

I would say that this is probably one to cherish a little more and would deserve garaging, as it has been accustomed all its life, hence the higher price tag.

There are decent 480s for a lot less that you would be happy with I’m sure! The upcoming R-cars are probably going to be good buys as they won’t come with any niggles as they’ll have been thoroughly Jeff’d

Personally, if it were mine I’d would love and cherish it but would throw originality out of the door and have the Cat off it immediately and also have the bumpers painted to match the car. Not sure what I’d do with the thin black side stripes— probably try to put the thicker ones and have painted at the same time to match.

It’s just a shame that we 480 lovers are having to deal with classic car dealers... this is new territory for us. I understand they have to make money, and at least this guy seems to be very good at detailing and has added something to the car for his money. Our friend trying to rip people off with his shiny white ES on the other hand makes it difficult to accept that we are now dealing with this type!

Oh yeah, and welcome aboard Seacow!

Hey everyone! Really nice to be back on the forum again after a short 18 year holiday (those years went fast!) Thanks to Jeff! :-).

I said hello in General Discussions (forgive my lack of forum etiquette it's been a long time!) I still am a huge 480 fan and the old girl M43 TEV a 1994 Red Turbo has sat many years sad and alone but I will get it back on the road. I've owned about 5 480's back then and even bought and sold a couple and according to my old posts sold parts too! (should I be worried I can't remember?).

Anyways I found a grey Turbo for sale in N.Ireland (one owner for 30 years and looked stunning with 75k) the seller was a really cool car guy but sold it that morning to a dreaded classic car dealer who almost doubled the price to wait for it... €10,000 Euros! I tried to buy it from them but gave me a run around on price, eventually I refused to go the extra €200 on principle and well turns out the ROI market is strong as they cannot import from England anymore and I missed it as the seller never replied back to me on my last offer so lost out for the sale of £200. It was a case of it's from the 1990's and has pop up lights so someone bought it as the dealer knew nothing about the car. I licked my wounds and then came across OAB during a daily search.

I must have caught this immediately after it was posted on Ebay (for the 2nd or 3rd time?) as I was the 1st to enquire about it only to discover you guys are so sharp it was already discussed here and like everything has a history. Initially for £4500 it would have been a bargain for a 480 fan, the seller bought for £4200 and is now offering to me for £6300. Although It's a cracking example albeit quirky with usually specified bits and pieces it appears immaculate with a great MOT history. It just pains me to yet again to line someones pocket for detailing. He serviced it inc cam belt and replaced the tyres as they were old. So around £600 was spent plus he had to ship from the south up to Scotland (I'm outside Brighton in Worthing so just typical!) anyways I like the car but still feel that maybe £6300 is still too rich, what do you all think? He told me someone had offered £6k and countered at £6500 and was waiting to confirm. I said £6300 but now think that my enthusiasm has let me down! What on earth should I do? I would not be surprised that if I don't buy it someone else will and there really cannot be many out there with 22k in this condition? I won't mention the 'other' ES that sold at Bonhams for around £4k that's now for sale for a snip under €20,000 Euros! God some dealers really suck! Best wishes Anthony (Tevred Turbo)

@tevred turbo these things are only ever worth what someone is prepared to pay and at around £6k I think this is reasonable and if the previous sale price was £4200 then with the money spend as you said the mark up is less than a grand - thats far from exorbitant in this game. And as someone else said at least value has been added especially the detailing.

At the end of the day if its what its worth to you and you cant think of how much someone is making (although I would have struggled nearer £8k). If you want a low mileage one like this then there wont be many opportunities!

There is always a premium for low mileage cars.

Are they worth double or triple that of a well loved example? A bit of body work and paint would see the difference in value reduce.

But if you want to drive and enjoy a 480 how much of a difference is there between a £1500 car and one at £6500.

Buy the best car in your budget and if you get a car that doesn't need work that's the dream.

Hey Edie

I bought it! Missed out on the grey Turbo so I'll keep this one and fix up my old Turbo... At least both are red!

Just arranging for it to be transported down south and I'll post more once I have it.

Cheers

Anthony :-)
