R3 - yet another bus !

Cleaned up the garage, found parts laying around, but it turned out to be a complete Volvo 480? If you want to sell your car (480 only) you can place an advert here.

R3 - yet another bus !

Post by dragonflyjewels » Tue Aug 25, 2020 2:43 pm

Bearing in mind that R1 is in need of a set of seats, preferably the early design with blue piping, I got all excited when this came up on ebay
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-480es- ... fresh=true
No closeups of the wheel arches encouraged the thought it might be full of rust. Perfect, I thought, right seats and low mileage so minimal wear on them, plus a pile of useful spares.
It's not far from jaster so he went over to have a look and 'sadly' reported near perfect arches (filler from a minor shunt but no sign of rust) and all feels very solid behind them. Damn, less a seat source than yet another 480 in need of rescue, as if we need another one ! Jeff has no more storage space and we certainly dont want to bring it all the way to Norfolk only to have to take it back again, so we have been torn between 'it needs to be rescued', 'we can't possibly buy it, it will have to take its chances' and 'o but those seats are just what we need!'
The seller had told jaster he'd rather it went to the club, hopefully for rescue but if not to help save another one and also that if we wanted it, he'd take an offer of £200 and stop the auction, plus store it for up to a month. So, after days of dithering we finally decided to take the plunge. The pot is now down to just £50 - urgh !!
The next conundrum is prioritising repairs. We are collecting the Celebration from Mansfield on Thursday - do we give it to Jeff and hope there isn't much to do on it so we can move it on quickly, or do we bring it here and let Jeff concentrate on R1 / R3. We really need a crystal ball !!

Petrol Blue as well! that's a rare colour, and sound like it could just be a MAP sensor issue as well :o

Payment sent by bank transfer this afternoon, seller has ended the auction so now there are 3.
Here was me originally thinking we could maybe save 2 or 3 a year  Mind, it might take Jeff a year to get over these 3.

I am really pleased this one has been saved, especially given the colour, other than James' old E-reg, I have never even seen a picture of another Petrol Blue (I assume) car. I hope it is too good to break

Having found out that the seller of R3 is a one man band bodyshop with the reputation of being an ace fabricator, I booked our Saab in for wheel arches. All that is available in the way of repair panels is the front end of the arch and ours is rusty both ends. Our usual bodyshop and our Saab repair man both said the same thing - you have to buy the complete rear quarter panels. Only about 2k each side to buy and have fitted ! ulp !! An ace fabricator was just what we needed, and it was a good idea to placate him for the late collection of R3. Kimosaaby was delivered to him yesterday, giving me an opportunity to have a look at R3 and also ask about the history.

It's the usual story on a relatively rust free example - bought new by someone with a garage who loved it, looked after it and kept it long term. In this case until he died a few years back leaving it to be inherited by his son. The son used it for a year or so but had a very limited budget and no garage so problems weren't fixed and the car ended up just left parked on the drive. Our man the ace fabricator bought it with half an idea of doing it himself - he does all sorts of weird restorations and whacky conversions for some seriously wealthy clients so this was a bit ordinary for him, hence it ended up on ebay.

R2 is moving off to the Pamper Parlour, vacating a 480 shaped space on Jeff's drive so we shall shortly be investigating whether we can hire someone to trailer R3 to him during lockdown. I'd already realised it wasn't worth us doing it, with trailer hire at £72, fuel for a fairly long journey and the Saab off the road anyway. Quotes initially came in around the £80 mark and when I didn't respond, I started getting offers under £60 - it's not very far from Witney to Milton Keynes, unlike our previous rescues.

I love the colour of this one, really rare!

I look forward to seeing how this goes, if I had the space, money, time, skill etc. I would be interested in saving it myself

Much less terror-inducing than the celeb.
And, yes, lovely colour!

Can't wait to hear the report. Well done on all the 480 moving and swapping, people!
