Car Wanted
Hi there everyone happy to have joined and looking forward to becoming a fully fledged owner very soon so what cars are anyone prepared to let go? Don't really want the 1.7 but would prefer the 1.7 turbo or the 2.0 engines. Celebration would be awesome but doubt there are any that people would consider parting with. Also don't want one with tons of work to do. Feel free to let me know what you all got for sale and I look forward to getting to know you all.
Re: Car Wanted
Hi There, welcome to the site!
There have been a few go recently, turbos though are very hard to come by that aren't string-bags. N/A 1.7s are actually very decent, but only if you get one without the cat (B18E engine), as from what I hear the power drains considerably. My one is a B18E and is an '88 car, however, I do not know when they went OOP, though someone here definitely will.
2.0i models are your best bet, they are probably the most common 480 variant, and If you are patient there will be a good one.
In terms of values expect to pay £2500 or around there for a decent one, with the best examples you should be paying around £3500-4k tops, but only pay more than that for something truly exceptional
Pleasure to have you among us!
Ben

Re: Car Wanted
concur two litre is a lazy drive, lots of low end torque vs the 1.7 version, but if no cat, pre K plate, then nothing really wrong.MisterH wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 7:04 pmN/A 1.7s are actually very decent, but only if you get one without the cat (B18E engine), as from what I hear the power drains considerably. not tried a turbo, and I guess if you have driven a 'modern' turbo then rememeber that these are 'older school' type, not quite five minutes turbo lag, but NOT like anything from last few years where you hardly notice the turbo kick in

Re: Car Wanted
Model year 89-90 was when Volvo went over to 'clean' versions and added the cat

Re: Car Wanted
That's odd, mine is an MY89 (but '88 car) with the B18E and no cat as far as I can tell (no B-pillar symbol or cat on the exhaust system)dragonflyjewels wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 6:20 pmModel year 89-90 was when Volvo went over to 'clean' versions and added the cat
Could you please extrapolate?

No idea when during 1989-90 the change was. Information is from the translation of a Dutch book I've been English-language editing. The parts list may shed some light if it gives chassis nos the cat fits.

Ah, either way I know I've got the B18E Throttle bodies, it certainly is a peppy, fun, dare I say sporty engine, certainly doesn't feel power drained or underpowered.dragonflyjewels wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 9:11 pmNo idea when during 1989-90 the change was. I think my chassis number is on here, if you want it I can PM you, I hope the editing goes well!

LEGALLY, K onwards, then 'cat' required, upto then , not 'really needed'dragonflyjewels wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 9:11 pmNo idea when during 1989-90 the change was. but given the Swede's I'm sure that Volvo fitted them before this

You've not mentioned budget....just_somebody wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 6:05 pmHi there everyone happy to have joined and looking forward to becoming a fully fledged owner very soon so what cars are anyone prepared to let go? A celebration or turbo, that doesn't need tons of work to do is going to hold a fairly high price tag.
You've seen the turbo for sale here?

Re: Car Wanted
What’s the chances of finding a half decent 480 preferably auto but not that important for £1000-£1500? Or is that just ridiculous? Sorry for my ignorance but new to these models and seem to see so many different takes on prices and what they fetch etc.

Re: Car Wanted
Most people find autos much less desirable so if one comes up, you can be assured that if it isn't a decent price you can negotiate.
Price wise: don't believe the mad prices you have seen recently on eBay as I doubt anyone bought those over inflated cars.
I believe someone on here has an Auto in their collection which could do with a good home in time.......!
