Celebration 403

Cleaned up the garage, found parts laying around, but it turned out to be a complete Volvo 480? If you want to sell your car (480 only) you can place an advert here.

It does look very tidy and a load of detailing been done

BUT
some of the photos are from BEFORE 2016 / 2017 . . . . as on UK plates with an expired MoT ;-)

still far too expensive!

Yes, it looks like quite a nice example but £9K??

I know Jeff and I have slightly differing views on the prices being sought these days - but we're never that far apart! In addition to his points as well as the obvious lack of spoiler, it also has an incorrect boot-lid...

When I first looked at this advert when Marc first posted, there was a rear photograph showing a boot-lid with a "480ES" badge on it. Strange, I thought, that's not right - has the boot-lid been replaced and if so why? If it was just the badge replaced, given a Celebration just says "480" wouldn't you trim down a badge from an ES?

Anyway, now I see that particular photo has gone? I wonder if someone pointed it out? There remains a photo side on to the near-side with the boot open, and you can just make out that there is more on the nearside of the boot-lid than just "480".

Right - I'll get outside now and start detailing Nilani: £8.5K anyone?? ;) ;)

Volvo 480 Celeb

Asking Price - STG - £7450 / Euro €8450
Negotiable to genuine buyer

Response to a few queries / posts on here regarding Celebration 403

1. Front Spoiler - Service records show that John Morris Volvo made note that front spoiler was cracked on 23/08/05 @ 27,388 miles. Car is as I found it & i certainly wasn't going to pass up a rare opportunity in saving such a beautiful car just because its spoiler was missing. Spoiler was obviously removed. Elderly owner may not have wished to replace it or perhaps new one couldn't be obtained. I have tried to get one but so far unsuccessful. If anyone on here has one or knows where there is a spoiler pls let met know. Thks.

2. Dashboard crack - Those on here that are familiar with Volvo 480's will obviously know that the top dash corner is prone to cracking. This is why i took the photos of cracks so that anyone viewing could judge for themselves. Finding one without a crack is like winning the lotto. However we are looking into having this repaired professionally in the next week or so and new photos will be available with repair done. If it can't be repaired it will stay as is. Again I wasn't going to fault a unique original 25 year old car on this when opportunity came up to acquire it.

3. Photos - All photos / video on our website, on carandclassic advert & in our Flickr album were taken in APRIL & MAY 2020. Approx 130 photos on our Flickr album of this car with as many angles as possible to give potential purchaser a better idea of the remarkable unrestored condtion of this car. A link to the Flickr album can be emailed to anyone interested.

4. Rear Badge - This is as I found car. Have checked and can't find any evidence of rear hatch been replaced. The history file has no record showing replacement & with such an extensive record being kept of this car, if it was replaced there would be some invoice for it. Some have suggested removing the ES but I won't be doing this so it will stay as is. If a purchaser wishes to alter badge that is their choice. I am aware of two or three Celebs with this badge. Again this wasn't going to cause me any concern when I found car.

5. Tyres - The car sat on Goodyear tyres. The elderly owner who was in her 80's fitted some new tyres for MOT test prior to selling car. All the tyres are "E" marked with 6 - 7mm thread depth on them & approx 300 miles since last test. If tyres are a deal breaker, a set of new tyres can be fitted for purchaser.

6. Price - Yes it is priced at the higher end. Some will disagree with valuing the car in this price range and thats fine. Go out there and find another to match it !!!!!. It won't be easy. If it sells great, the purchaser will own a top end example of the Celebration model. If not it will be placed back into storage and used & maintained & injoyed as its better than money in the bank.

Hi Henry, thanks for the further information. You'll find us a "tough crowd" on here and it's a nice change to have a dealer seek to respond constructively to our comments.

Cracked dashboard you are so right about - dont think I've seen one without a crack for many years.

Cracked centre console is not a common one though - usually only happens if someone has been ham-fisted taking it in or out.

Boot lid badge - I have seen this on one other Celebration and it was a replacement. The "480" badge was specific to this model and the ES was a different model available 87-95. No rhyme of reason why Volvo should have got this wrong. Not saying it would be a deal breaker but, whatever the history doesn't show, something has happened here...

Spoiler - often missing and rare to obtain. One option is as Sylvia suggests.

Tyres - perfectly fair comment by you.

As the owner of a GT that could give this Celebration a good run for its money, as well as a Celebration project, I'd dearly like to see values on this much undervalued cars going up. Personally I am not sure the market is yet ready to pay what you seek, but I'd love to be proved wrong and I genuinely wish you good luck with the the sale.

Best

Hi David

Thanks David for your fair views and comments. Much appreciated.

They certainly are very undervalued in comparison to other classics in this era. I have had several Volvo's up through the years from a rare Volvo 262C Bertone Coupe, 240GLT, P1800, 480, 960, a few 850's and a C70 Convertible but I think the 480's are the best to drive & always turns heads

It's great to see owners like yourself cherishing this model Volvo and keeping as many on the road as possible. A good well sorted example is hard to beat. Good luck with the Celebration restoration and the GT. Injoy them.

All the Best

Henry

I think the toughest crowd are not the folks here, because they already have a 480  The toughest crowd are the potential buyers. And they are not going to pay that much, unless the car is 100% perfect, then it might spark interest from Volvo collectors. Imperfections are already stated: wrong badge on the rear hatch and missing spoiler. Both can be rectified though. Cheap Chinese rubber should not be a dealbreaker if you're not going to drive the car anyway. I do find it peculiar the car is on (fake?) Irish plates.

I cannot speak for the market in the UK, I am in The Netherlands where the Volvo 480 has a small but dedicated cult following because it was designed and built in this country. Nevertheless, people see the 400-series as a cheap banger. Cars above € 3,000 sell slowly and everything above € 5,000 is an extremely tough sell. There are a handful of mint condition 480's for sale, which have been sitting at the seller's lot for years now, because the market for a mint condition 480 is very small.
1987 ES 61,611 km € 4,900 -> should sell within a year
1994 S auto 61,959 km € 9,900 -> been here for two years
1995 GT Turbo 79,484 km € 9,940 -> been here for three years
and I have been busy trying to sell a club member's mint 480 Turbo automatic from 1991 with 51,000 kms for a year now and the seller of a near-mint 1995 480 ES with 80,000 kms on the clock has given up and put the car back in storage.

So I wish you all the luck and above all, patience!

Edit: It could very well be that the car has had a "480 ES" badge from new. This car doesn't have ABS, which is correct to ES spec, and the factory workers in Born weren't very picky when it came to building the last cars from the remaining bits in stock! (this one has VIN 593679, the last one which is in the Volvo museum in Göteborg has 594018)
Robert.

Present cars: 1994 Volvo 480 GT 2.0i, 1999 Volvo S70 2.5 Europa, 2010 Volvo V70 2.0F Momentum

Good observations Robert about values, sadly.

On your last point, I hate to argue but - as per all Celebrations - 403 has got ABS...you can see it in the engine bay photos.

Come to that by 1995 I am pretty sure all UK spec ES models had ABS anyway; only the S didn't...

So, just to expand on my points.

Tyres: Its a personal point, but I HATE cheap tyres; Yes, they're round. black and have legal tread depth; They'll get you through a MOT.
For me, it shows poor maintenance. I do less than 1000 miles a year with my cars, and the tyres will be replaced probably due to age than tread depth, but still with a quality brand. I'd sooner the miles I do are done with quality rubber, than be in a ditch. However, as Henry has already said they'd be replaced if it was a deal breaker, we can move on.

The price: It's the probably the 2nd most expensive one in the last 5 years. As such, if you're asking top dollar, I'd be expecting as close to perfect as possible. Would I pay that much? Well, no but I'm not in the market. However, as we have people viewing this, I'd hate for someone to spend the money and come here, only to have all those faults highlighted.

The KGF celebration did eventually sell; as did the white turbo (Edie's). However, in both cases, I believe the asking price was NOT the price paid. I was also quick to point out the faults in those cars too! In pointing out the faults, I'm giving any potential purchaser leverage to negotiate on price. Buying with the heart is a dangerous thing to do! (oh don't I know it! )

Then lets also look at a celebration for sale here. Perhaps that's the joy of buying privately?

Now, on the other side of the coin, I also know, only too well, how expensive it is to restore cars. Which, you could argue, makes £8k seem cheap.

So, in summary, is it worth it? To someone, hopefully, or at least somewhere near that figure. However, location and the general 480 market could mean it'll be a while before it sells. If it does sell, I hope you point the owner in our direction, so that we can help them maintain it for many more years to come.

Seems I got a bit of a bargain. Apart from the spoiler needing spraying I would say my celeb is not far off the one advertised. Granted the mileage is higher 66000 when purchased but it has full history 2 owners, original dealers stickers and reg plates, it’s certainly the best of the four I have owned and I am well pleased with it.

Robert (Brinkie)

RE PLATES : These are just display plates with Volvo logo & IRL badge with our business name on number plate surround. The original supplying dealer plates are with car. The reg no. is N232 OJV as on the V5 document and all supplying service records. We are a dealer with authorisation to deal in foreign registered cars. If the car sells in Ireland it will receive a new Irish registration number but at this moment it is on original UK reg.
The car is HPI checked and cleared and also supplied with a CARTELL history certificate verifying mileage etc. The service records speak for themselves - it is extensive.

ABS : I can confirm that this car does have ABS

In my opinion the car is an exceptional example of a 25 year old unrestored 480 Celebration, one lady owner and 30,170 miles.

For those looking for absolute perfection there is a 480 for sale in Belgium with 77kms for £19000

Thanks for your good wishes

Which also remains unsold, because members have pointed out that it had never been registered for the road, and as such, is purely a museum piece, which would never be legally permitted on the road.

Jeff

Yes Jeff you are correct a museum piece it certainly is at 77kms

Thats what makes this Celeb 403 with 30,170 miles very attractive, low mileage but used every year even if only minimal but keeps everything rotating so nothing seized, everything working, so thankfully it hasn't suffered the usual perishment & seizing up of things that can happen low mileage cars of this age. Added bonus is the yearly maintainance from new that this fabulous Volvo received with all work detailed not only on every invoice but also every check report and final drive test report giving reassurance to a potential buyer of the care this car received over 25 years and of course veryifing its low mileage. A potential new owner can use car, injoy it, take it to shows, put another few thousand miles on it and still have a low mileage 480 and of course if they join this forum they have the opportunity to make contacts from all on here and seek advise that will help them keep car going for years to come. Another one saved and isn't that what its all about. Underated and undervalued but hopefully that will change .

I take on board the few imperfections you pointed out. Trivial really overall as it is a 25 year old unrestored car and as already pointed out they all can be easily rectified. Front spoiler is an exception & proving hard to get but i am trying at the moment. Maybe for the asking price some will expect it to be a new car and it may not sell at all but time will tell. Theres a sock for every shoe as they say.

All the best

Yes Jeff you are correct a museum piece it certainly is at 77kms
You missed the point; it’s nothing to do with mileage or maintainence; it’s a museum piece as the vehicle has no VIN numbers, thus cannot be legally registered. It was originally a gift from Volvo to a technical college I believe.

Low mileage is no indicator for wear; in fact low mileage can lead to increased wear. Service history? Well again, as I currently own a car that has extensive service history from “specialist” dealers, I too, would take it with a pinch of salt, because it’s ever so easy charge the unsuspecting and gullible public for work that doesn’t get done. Profit, at the end of the day, is what keeps garages in business. Those large shiny showrooms and expensive free coffee don’t come cheap.

Yes, I’m a sceptic; but that’s because experience has taught me that there’s a whole lot of people out there only too willing to detail a car, take nice photos and ask for far in excess of what it’s truly worth. I’m that person that wants to deal with the owner, the person who has loved and cherished the car.

However, as the car seems to have vanished from the website, perhaps a buyer has already been found?

Yes Jeff, I agree and we too have seen it all up through the 52 years we have been in business. Cars that have been bodged, sold into the wrong hands, bad repairs, tarted up etc its a nightmare.

I am also a classic car enthusiast and a collector. My preference is one or two owner cars with stacks of paperwork that has been cherished just like this Volvo 480 and where you can put a life story to the car. Yes it is great to get the opportunity to purchase from original owner but that in my experience is not always possible as sometimes unique cherished cars come up for sale due to the death of an owner by the family etc.

RE : WEBSITE - No the car isn't sold yet nor has it vanished - well i hope not.!!! No its safely tucked away under cover with some other classics. We are upgrading a new feature on our website for listing classic cars on there separately this week and will be placing the Volvo on there along with some other nice cars over time so it will be back on there later this week with a new video if I can get a nice sunny day.

In the meantime it is on the www.carandclassic.co.uk website .
