I searched high and low for one, for a long time, then came across one which had been listed on a NOS parts aggregate site by a dealership in Cork, Ireland.. cost me €18 delivered, don't fancy my chances getting a new Volvo part again...

Not necessarily after a new one, just a known good one would do.
RobouMod + no speedo = no license soon!

Dear Mr Sideways (& readers), I had a thought: our lovely auto box was fitted to the following cars...
1987–1993 Citroën BX 1.6
1987–1993 Citroën BX 1.9
1987–1993 Peugeot 205 1.6
1987–1993 Peugeot 205 1.9
1987–1989 Peugeot 305 1.5
1987–1996 Peugeot 309 1.6
1987–1996 Peugeot 309 1.9
1987–1997 Peugeot 405 1.6
1987–1997 Peugeot 405 1.8
1987–1997 Peugeot 405 1.9
1990–1996 Volvo 400 series
1991–1998 Rover 800 (XX/R17)
1992–1998 Citroën ZX 1.8
1993–1998 Citroën Xantia 1.8
1993–1998 Citroën Xantia 2.0
1993–2001 Peugeot 306 1.8
1993–2001 Peugeot 306 2.0
1996–1997 Daewoo Nubira 1.5
1996–1997 Daewoo Nubira 1.8
1996–1997 Daewoo Leganza 1.8
1996–1997 Daewoo Leganza 2.0
Maybe the the speed sensor is the same on one of these...

There are only two kinds of speedo sensors fitted to the 480.
3413744-8 up till model year 1992
3467846-6 from model year 1993 onwards
No difference in what gearbox or engine is used. That, or the parts book may be entirely wrong.
I am currently scrapping a 1990 Turbo with a good speedo sensor (at least it was working when I was driving it to the slaughterhouse
), so I can use that one as a reference when looking for alternatives.
Most of the cars listed above have mechanical speedometers, the 306 (and probably the ZX and Xantia too) have electronic speedo sensors, but they don't look like the ones in our cars.
Volvo 480 sensor, pic found in an old thread

Peugeot/Citroën sensor
Renault sensor (same manual gearboxes as in our cars)

Hmm...
That throws a spanner in the works.
My car is a '92/'93!!
Red ecu, older font on the clocks. I'd hazard a guess at the older type.

You can tell by the identification (chassis) number.
MY 1992 ends at 580385
MY 1993 starts at 581000

Ah, mine's a 460T so don't think those numbers apply.
My chassis number ends 294030.

The VIN for your Volvo 460 Turbo automatic is composed as follows:
XLB = Volvo, L = 460, X = no SRS or seat belt tensioners, 19 = B18FT-engine, 3 = auto box, E = Europe, x = model year, C = Born, Netherlands, yyyyyy = serial number. (Apparently, they never envisaged to build more than a million cars
)
so it looks like
XLBLX193ExCyyyyyy
You can determine the model year here:
https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/vin_400.shtml
If yours is model year 1992, the letter "N" should be in the model year, otherwise it is a "P" for 1993.
e.g.
XLBLX193E
NC294030 is 1992
or
XLBLX193E
PC294030 is 1993

Piss off you!!
I've been busy buying C70 ragtops!
Besides, this car will NEVER be fixed. Less broken is more like it.

Good buys those soft top C70s...but remember you were trying to downsize the fleet
tell you what if I ever get my T4 project on the go, there'll be a spare speed sensor right there. Might even be one on that manual box I got from Sparky
