Hellfire Caves
There is a very small carpark in front of the caves entrance, which is where I’m hoping to get some excellent photos of groups of approx. 5 cars. The caves open at 11 so I was originally planning arrival by 10 after starting at a breakfast location. The caves are a few hundred yards walk from the West Wycombe carpark which is tree lined, large and fairly empty, so also good for photos.
Having had a chat to the staff at the caves, I was dismayed to be told that on some days, people have arrived as early as 9 to be sure of parking at the entrance – apparently they prefer to wait in their cars for 2 hours rather than walk, and no, they aren’t disabled, the caves aren’t really suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. I'm speechless ! Can only hope it doesn’t happen on the day, or if it does, they may be amenable to moving if we ‘save’ their space for them to come back to.
The plan now is to have the big carpark as the 9am start point, and hopefully despatch groups to the caves as they arrive. The other difficulty is that the lane to the caves is very narrow with a few passing places so it might take a bit of time to get the groups there and back before the next ones can go. Obviously, the earlier people arrive, the better chance of their car being photographed at the caves. We will in any case have time for photos in the big carpark, where we shouldn’t have any difficulty getting all the 480s in a row.
We will then walk up to the caves (shock, horror !) for 11 when the coffee shop opens. n.b no access to toilets before 11.
As usual, Al and I will travel down the night before, so we will take our cars to photograph at the caves on the Friday evening. Anyone wanting to join us then will of course be very welcome. If it all goes pearshaped members driving home that way after staying overnight could return to the caves on Sunday evening (they close at 5.30).
If we end up with an invader or two in the photos, I’ll have a go at editing them out.
