Next Irish Meet - Glenshane Mountain Pass - 14th Dec. 2008

Post by Darren » Sun Nov 23, 2008 1:27 pm

Date; Sunday 14th December

Meeting; Ness Garden Centre Car Park
11.00am, leaving at 11.30 on the dot...
Thanks to NI_Volvo_Nut we've made a couple of revisions in the route to make it a little more exciting without effecting the schedule!

Travelling from the South via/or the East;
Follow the M2 up to Antrim and continue forward onto the M22. As the M22 ends follow onto the A6 heading for Londonderry. Once you pass signposts for Claudy, Ness Garden Centre will be signposted several miles up the road on the right - if you miss the first entrance don't worry, there's a second entrance a few hundred yards further on (we'll be meeting near the top entrance).

For the Southerns - having explored the local roads I would recommend heading up via the East as above; it's a few more miles but given the roads it would be quicker and probably less boring.

Run Details;
Due to our shorter days over Winter this will simply be an easy jaunt through the Sperrin Mountains along the Glenshane Pass. Easy driving, easy roads and half way down a short detour over a mountain road with lovely scenery!

We will finish at Harleys American Steakhouse outside Castledawson for lunch which I've uploaded the menu for;

If you haven't already done so, let me know if you are attending and how many will be in your party so I can keep note of the numbers for the reservation!

NI_Volvo_Nut has helped out with the route and we've been able to make a few revisions for the better! I did a test run today and we'll be taking a 'Z' shape jaunt over the North Sperrins. The route offers lovely scenery of the Sperrin Mountains, more-so if they are snow-topped like they were today (the roads were fine).

Here's a picture I took today;

If your travelling from the South I would recommend heading up East of Lough Neagh - the motorways and main roads will add a few miles however greatly shorten the journey time especially in this weather.

7 Volvos, 13 people and a few dogs. It would be nice to add to it; our last meet of 2008.

Everyone appears to have enjoyed the meet yesterday. :volvo: It was fortunate the weather was good for us going over the mountain pass, minus the shower of light hail which left my arm very numb trying to take pictures!!

I'm sorry to hear of those that couldn't make the meet at such short notice; always the next one to look forward to!

The dinner was surprising; they were short staffed today so I think they were glad we were down on numbers - that said, the food was still great but the bill was even greater - or should that be lesser? :lol: £45 to feed 7 and we had the drinks thrown in! Kirsty and I are going to head down there some night for a meal over Christmas. It's a pretty cool restaurant also!

Thanks to everyone for helping out when the 245 decided the mountain pass was enough! First my horn went, then the indicators flashed fast and slow when indicating, dash lights went out and then the radio dies before the car finally comes to a stop over a bridge! Anyway, she died a second time half a mile round the corner from home, the worst about that was I knew it was going to happen!! She's due her yearly (and a half!) service so I'll have my mechanic sort out the alternator for me.

Roll on the next one; any of the Irish members have any ideas for a meet?

A guy called Craig - his username on other Volvo forums is 'craig8661'! Bonnie (the proud mother!) had seven or so and these are the only two left, which I think they are going to keep! The black one is called Sophie and the white one is Casper! Very cute and friendly! :)
