480 Uk Main Meet feeler...

Post by Dan the 480 Man » Mon Jun 11, 2007 9:31 am

Hi people.

Ok. I was quite gutted about the 480 meet being off this year, and i know there are a few others too. So the last few weeks or so i've been plugging away over the www looking for some places etc. I've contacted campsites etc, enquired into activities we could take part in etc. I have contacted a few classic car organisers to see if we can get a stand up. I'm not angling at mint 480's either, just a stand to let people know we're here, especially as the model and club (to a lesser extent) have had publication exposure. None of the above are concrete, just things i looked at for inspiration. Obviously i want something that'll appeal to a majority or seem interesting.

I've propsed 3 days for the meet, a Fri, Sat & Sun which i'll explain further below. I'm basing the meet for August, this gives time to organise time off, save a little cash etc (i'll have to as i don't even have a job atm!). Taking into consideration the feedback from potential sites, the meet would be one of two weekends:

(Fri, SAt & Sun): 3rd, 4th & 5th or 17th, 18th & 19th.

I have a structure, which would be:

Fri-arrive from early/mid-day onwards-gives people a chance to arrive and get sorted out, and to be able to drive down under no pressure!

Sat-Wake up. lol. Get the club together and get ready to travel to destination on convoy (gutted this didn't happen last year-i see 480's on their own all year, so when there's more we're travelling together ). The destination has been pencilled in, but i'm waiting for more feedback so again, more details will be confirmed when i've had concrete confirmation. It won't be expensive as most 480 owners are usually skint

After destination, convoy home with a stop off in a nice location for some 'en-masse' group photo's and a leg stretch, fag, whatever lol. The destination for group photo's will be researched so it's not just drive and stop where-ever (unless we pass somewhere nice on the way).

Back at HQ, i'm looking for a place with BBQ facilities so we can look back on the days events, eat and let our hair down, for those that have it ;). In the evening a camp-fire and continuation of drink/socialising-be good to keep us altogether. I'd be basing the evening on an open air event but will be looking for somewhere with a pub near-by incase of bad weather.

Sun-An opportunity to pack up and say our goodbyes ready for the trip home.

Seems a short weekend, but keeping it tight means there's no time for dragging heals or having nothing to do, plus there's then no pressure to squeeze too many things in and not give people anytime to enjoy the things we are doing!

I'm being quite harsh with the dates, but i know you can't please everybody-and too much flexability will result in failure-so as it was mentioned, pick a date and whoever comes comes. It's not intended to alienate anybody, but if we spend ages 'umming' over dates it'll be too late to sort, especially as August is quite a popular camping/meet season.

So, to answer the poll-i'm not putting dates-it will be one of those weekends (3rd 4th & 5th or 17th 18th & 19th August)-put yes if you are happy doing either and could make it, or no if you're not interested.

This is for us, so lets be positive about it! I've never organised anything like this before, but i've made some pretty good headway. I need a rough idea on how many would come so i can get prices/info etc and confirm. Oh, and so not to deviate too much, i am basing location in the Lakes again as i don't know the country that well to be able to pick somewhere of similar asthetic value! Hence most of the places i've contacted being around that area...

I aim to have some solid plans/places by the end of the week LATEST. I'll get dates/camp sites and package together an itinery for each set of dates/locations, and i'll get it posted officially in the meet section. I want a meet this year, as i'm sure others do too-so i won't let this slip by the wayside, i'll put the effort in as long as people are up for going!

So, post and 'Poll' away! :D

what evil person voted for hating 480's!? I'd guess the latter the dates the better, giving the most time for everyone to have it planned for...

good on you for getting something going tho!

I'm in Dan. Dunno if i'd have a 480, but i'd show up anyway. I've turned up in all manner of crap in the past.

The "volvo" 418SD aka tractor was the best. Did a good job of towing lee with it mind.

Will be attending one way or another. As this will only work with numbers, to gain maximum exposure it can stay in this forum for now and to keep it at the top I have made it a sticky.

Thats looking positive people! 12 for yes when i checked just now :D

I'm actually physically calling around places tomorrow (on the phone, not in the car), so things are gradually coming together :D

One thing i did notice, is that there are 2 bank hol's in August. The main one at the end of the month, but also the first weekend i'm proposing, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and the 6th being Bank Holiday. Would people prefer the earlier or later? Just thinking of people with long distances to travel-time for a bit of R&R on the Monday!

Like i said initially, it will be whatever the easiest date will be at the end, but if there's a preference after i've put it all together, i'll see what i can do.

I'm off to cruise with my new Momo :D And my stiffy struts

Bank holiday weekend would be best, would be easier rather than having to book 2 days off work.

Once a date is set I'll try and work around getting over for the weekend with the missus in the 'S'. :volvo:

I don't want to make my mark on a prefered date and I can't fully commit, but it will depend on ferry prices and if I can get a day or two off work. :D

::: Update :::

Ok. I've had some excellent help from the Cumbria Tourist Board today, which has helped to push things along tremendously. I have an a place sorted for the Saturday morning activity, i'm just awaiting confirmation from the proprietor. I have been given a good driving route with picnic/photo/and/or pub stops for the afternoon.

The campsite has BBQ/Shower/Toilet/Electric facilities for thos that need it-the only thing i need to do there is confirm numbers so we can organise the deposit-but i won't be posting that until the meet 'goes live' so to speak. Once i have had final confirmation from all parts of the meet, i'll then be posting officially in the Meet section.

The only thing that will need to be addressed is the dates. 3rd, 4th & 5th is a Bank Hol, so you get the 6th to rest (approx 7 weeks from now), or the 17th, 18th & 19th is longer (roughly 9 weeks), so more time to organise time off etc.

As before, these dates aren't my convinience, these are the dates easiest for the club to go with all the amenities/activities etc available.

As far as I can see, the uk only has one bank hol in Aug and that is the weekend of the 24/25/26/27... as found here

I definately couldn't make the weekend of the 4th, soz. Gaz will be returning home on the 25th Aug so couldn't promise anything for that weekend. Though I'm sure we'll be there if he's feeling up to it after travelling for a day and a half!

You are indeed correct! It's a Bank Holiday, just not in England!

So, it's 3 days eitherway people. And don't lose any faith in me because of that, it was overlooked on my behalf (i think it's the Irish & Scoys that get that as a Bank Hol).

Nearly there people....:D
